In this video, we explore a piece of history that isn't often discussed: the remarkable discovery of a Viking ship burial at Ladby, near Kerteminde fjord in Denmark. Found in 1935, the remains tell a fascinating tale. The ship, spanning almost 22 meters, once had room for 32 oarsmen. Although much of its structure has decayed over the centuries, we know it was constructed around 925 CE and was made of resilient oak.
The burial site offers more than just the ship. Inside, we find evidence of the eleven horses and four distinct dogs that accompanied someone of great importance to the afterlife. Among the remnants, a unique dog leash stands out, giving us insights into the fashion trends of the Viking era.
While much about the ship and its owner remains a mystery, we delve into theories and speculations. Who was this influential individual? How did he gain his wealth and power? The site's strategic location next to Kerteminde fjord suggests some intriguing possibilities.
Join me in uncovering the history and stories of the Ladby Viking ship. The details might be a mix of factual discoveries and educated guesses, but they paint a vivid picture of Viking life and the significance of this burial site. And if you're ever in Denmark, consider visiting the Ladby Viking Museum to experience this historical marvel firsthand.

I've seen the site twice: once as a teenager, with my parents, and a second time a few years back (Shortly after a metal detectorist found a gold cross nearby, which turned out to be the almost exact copy of one found in Birka, in Sweden, a long time ago). If the weather's good it's well worth a visit..on certain dates during the summer, iirc, it's also possible to see voulenteers sail the replica of the Ladby Ship on the nearby fjord :)

925 would have been just before the reign of Gorm the Old (Harald Bluetooth´s father). The death of the Ladby king could have left Funen without a strong ruler maybe and paved the way for Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth to gain control over the whole country I guess? Thanks for another great video.

Have you done a Y-DNA test yet? Many of the skeletons found in Ladby from the viking age, have their Y-DNA uploaded to FTDNA, along with many many other viking skeletons. For instance from the Ridgeway hill mass grave.

Dejligt at se en video om Ladby skibet. Især når man som jeg bare bor 5 min væk. Du må lave en 2ér, så resten kan komme med, Der er meget "viking" i kerteminde kommune. ☺☺
