I was riding Amtrak #48 from Chicago to New York and grabbed video of the dance that happens daily when Amtrak #48/#448 split into their respective Boston and NY City sections....

So much better than when I did Amtrak fly/rail Denver-Chicago - NYC (Lake Shore) in the late 90's Back then the Lake Shore when arriving at Albany (from Chicago - reverse NYC to Albany) NYC Lake Shore passengers had to deboard and take seperate train while Boston bound remained on the train to continue on. It was a disappointment having a sleeper then having to board a regular seat coach. This btw caused some "oh poop" having to get suitcase from baggage .. just made it in time to get on the continuing train to NYC because the baggage idiots were in no hurry to unload. In fact I grabbed my suitcase while it was still on the platform to get on the connector on time. Nice to see going from/to NYC if you have a sleeper you have it for the whole trip. Also back then you didn't have the seperate waiting area for sleeping car passengers as is available now in NYC-Chicago-LA. And looking at other videos the Viewliners look alot better than the old Heritage class sleepers .. at least now in a roomette you can use the toliet if the lower bed in is place .. couldn't on Heritage as it covered the toilet .. when you needed to do your duty at night you had to raise the bed .. real pain.

What are you talking about exactly? there has always been through car service on the Lakeshore Limited. Well except for a few years ago when they were doing track work in Albany and had to run 448/449 as a completely separate train and wasn't part of 48/49. But that was only temporary. im looking at a schedule from 1993 and even then it still had through cars. I do know that in the 80s the lakeshore limited schedule was a little loopy. it would leave NY at like 1pm and arrived into Chicago at like 1115.

Actually, there is a 3rd Amtrak split. That's in San Antonio, TX on the days the through cars from the Texas Eagle get added to the Sunset Limited (the through cars are rains 421/422).

In the case of someone riding through "intermediate" stops on the Lake Shore (Toledo-Cleveland or Cleveland-Albany for example), would the passenger be specifically assigned reservations to the NY section (48/49) or Boston section (448/449)?
@trainman1971
@trainman1971 6 жыл бұрын
It can go either way for intermediate points. It all depends on where space is available on the train. On a trip I made from Chicago to New York in 1992, I actually ended up in both sections. The only sleeper space was available on 448. So I was in the Boston sleeper from Chicago to Albany, and then in one of the New York coaches on 48 from Albany to New York.

@@trainman1971 So if you book a sleeper car on this train, there is a chance that you may have to change sleepers after they do the split? I have taken this train from Chicago to New York with no change in seating ( coach ) when they did the split. but I was anticipating taking this train from Chicago to Boston with sleeping accommodations. Will I have to change sleeping accommodations from Albany To Boston? How does that work?
@trainman1971
@trainman1971 5 жыл бұрын
@@gethighonlife11 No, you would be booked in the Boston sleeper, and have a through trip.

used to ride this train from the 1980s to the year 2000 with my late mom . wed go into albany and use albany for a base whilst she went of and did genealogical studies of our family in the region.remember the sleeprs would split off to go to nyc and wed go to albany. the old desert wind would split and merge with the ca zypher in salt lake city. so would the old cascade. onetime mom remarked to a friend , oh look, the 3 trains are on time . suddenly air brakes went off, mom ad friend had to disembark, as there was a frieght train derailment further down the line .

Here's how it appears to work. 48 pulls in and they platform only the New York cars. The Boston section (448) is pulled off and moves forward to a switch. Then it reverses onto a different platform and receives and discharges passengers. Once that is complete it continues to Boston. At the same time, a P32ACDM is coupled to the New York section and then it continues to New York. In the reverse direction, 449 comes in first with the P42's. When 49 comes in, the P32ACDM is pulled off. 449 is then switched onto the same track and is coupled to it and the combined train continues to Chicago. Also, with the reservation system, if going between Boston and Albany, both the New York and Boston sections show separately. You can book coach or sleeper in either one for the same price if both are available. If you wanted to ride in a sleeper between New York and Chicago or one of the intermediate stops between New York and Albany, but there was only sleeper space in the Boston section, the online reservation system would require you to book separate tickets if you were going to ride in coach before Albany. If you bought a ticket by phone or in person, they would likely be able to sell you both as one ticket.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head. On my first trip on the Lake Shore Limited (1992), I was going Chicago to New York in sleeper. There was only space in the Boston sleeper, so the ticket agent had to issue me two tickets on the LSL: one as sleeper from Chicago to Albany, and coach from Albany to New York. The ticket for the coach portion was never collected, as the Lake Shore Limited is a discharge-stop only/may leave ahead of schedule train for the New York section for Albany all the way in to NYC (only the Boston section receives passengers for points to Boston), so the crew never came through to collect.

Most of the LD trains are all D stops or all R stops if they travel on a busy corridor at the end of their route. They don't want short haul passengers taking seats that could be used by people on the area that only the LD train serves. On the LD trains that go south from New York (Silver Meteor, Silver Star, Crescent, and Cardinal), everything is R stops until Washington and Alexandria (depending on if there are any regionals that go past Washington close to it on the schedule). In the northbound direction, they are all D stops with the first one being Alexandria or Washington depending on the schedule for regional trains. The Carolinian and Palmetto operate as normal regionals between NY and WAS.
@trainman1971
@trainman1971 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure if there is a misprint or not, but the current timetables show the Carolinian as all "D" stops from Washington, DC to NYC, and the Palmetto as all "R" stops from NYC to Washington, DC. Prior to that, even the Palmetto was "R" stops south and "D" stops north along the NE Corridor, until a Regional train in each direction near its time slot was eliminated a year and a half or so ago. Three or four extra coaches were then added between NYC and DC to make up the difference, and the Palmetto began making all normal Regional stops for receiving and discharging passengers both ways.

I think Albany Station was the last real expensive thing Penn Central did after they abandoned Albany Union Station. I think they had abandoned the station because the city wanted them to move the tracks to the other side of the river. with the new limited dining car I'm sure ridership will drop off the cliff.

Most of what you see there is new. Penn Central's 1968 project, which went in when the original Albany station and terminal trackage was demolished for a freeway, was a very cheap thing with low level platforms and a canopy barely enough to cover two railcars. It was demolished to make way for a parking ramp and an Amshack built in about 1980. The structure you see in this video, headhouse, ramp, high-level platforms, escalators and so on, is almost entirely of 2002 vintage except for track four which was finished in 2016 and wasn't complete at the time of this video. Still some juggling when they split and join trains because the platforms at the new station are still too short to accommodate a complete Lakeshore Limited.
