It happens no matter what. When you keep enough fish, there will always be problems. As long as its isolated cases, and you've tested your water after you've seen the problem and all ok, then you can put it down to the fish having difficulties. I'm going to be honest on whatever happens. 99% of the time I'm fully happy with my water keeping abilities, stocking levels and fishkeeping in general, so if something happens with me, it's generally a bad fish (which is more than possible in the hobby especially with certain types i.e rams, colourful Gourami, bettas). But we must test the water if we see a problem first and foremost.

My cory that had a swim bladder issue finally got better. I put him alone so the neons wouldn't harass him as he floated around. I didn't feed him for quite a few days. Then I gave him two Epsom salt baths a few days apart. I only did a small bowl and like a tsp of salt for like 15 mins tho. I slowly started feeding him tiny bits again after a week or so too. He finally stopped doing his dead man floating and now is happy as can be. I put my betta in there that was having his fins ripped up by those same menace neons and they're happy little roomies :) So good luck to your little guy! I hate when my fish are stressed or sick! Makes me so sad :(

Fully agree about Corydoras, ive seen so many people roasting others on facebook and forums about substrate "you dont have sand, your being cruel, you shouldnt keep cory's if you dont know how to look after them.....blah blah blah". Like you said Cory (coop) showed the substrate from there natural habitat and it was quite sharp and coarse. I guess its just one of those things that has been around for years in the hobby such as you have to change water every week or your a bad fish keeper.

I had a tanganyika tank for a good long while, and the 'feature' fish were brichardi like MD has, and Cyphotilapia frontosa. The bold brown and white of the frontosas really set them apart from the brichardi and others. Might not be enough room for a LOT of them, though, but a pair of each maybe? I'm not nearly the pro most folks are; I just know what worked in my tank.

2nd comment - possible nutrient deficiencies. yellowing leaves and/or holes in the leaves is a sign of Manganese deficiency. lighter green in upper leaves is a nitrogen deficiency. And lower leaves yellowing from tip back toward stem is a sign of Magnesium deficiency. First thing to do is test your water. You may just need some Epsom Salts (Magnesium sulfate). This is also AWSOME for swim bladder issues in fish.

try putting in some floating plants into the tank to absorb some of the nitrates. the rooted plants in the tank are rather small and still establishing so nitrate levels are probably high, thus promoting algae growth. you don't have any african cichlids that specialize on grazing algae in the rocks so it will be a recurring maintenance chore for a while...

Hi, nice fish rooms. Only thing I noticed that could be improved with the Tanganikan tank is more rocks and you seem to be overfeeding. So any uneaten food will just encourage the hair algea too grow. Otherwise its a very nice set up. Youre obviously very keen on your plants so a Tanganikan tank is maybe a little out of your comfort zone. Saying that, the fish look bright, lively and healthy Good luck to you.

MD! Congrats on the cichlid tank :) I started with Freshwater, ended up with Malawis, then went to a reef tank for 9 years - best learning experience (and expensive experience) in my fish keeping life. You have to have patience with a reef tank but reward is the shear multitude of corals, fish and shrimp and a WHOLE bunch of other interesting critters to learn about and discover, it really is a beautiful experience. I am however back full circle to freshwater and planted aquascapes. But I do have an itch to get a medium nano reef tank going with some macro algae and soft corals going :) Anyway, you'll know when it's the right time ;) Cheers

Tanganyikans are way different than Malawis. You really do not want to overstock a tank like this. Tangs like Petrochromis and Tropheus are one thing, but Lamprologines should always start understocked, as they will fill that tank up in no time once they get to breeding size.

Maybe if you could place a stone in the discus hospital tank? So he could rest his fins a bit by leaning on the rock?...

keeping with the theme of algae being used for aesthetics, you should try a black beard algae tank. i have 1 tank like that, it kills off most plants but it looks like a nice moss/short grass growing over everything and moving in the flow. although the algae kills most plants, giant val and amazon swords can normally keep up with it and thrive

I think you can put a few mystery snails in with the African cichlids to help combat the algae as well.

You could put a betta in that tank and someone online will tell you it's overstocked.

I believe MALAYSIAN TRUMPET SNAILS can live with them, they can move sand around and help with the algae.

What are you using to drain and refill the tank? In the setup of the Lake (something something) tank you did 50% water changes back to back to clear it up and made it look so incredibly easy and I'd like to be able to do that.

Do a Potassium Permanganate treatment to the pigeon blood. Make sure you dose the PP perfectly. Dose it 6 times in 2 weeks. Hope it gets well

How about gluing some sand onto the foam base for future builds? That way even if the foam gets exposed it would still look like sand.
