Hello Everyone, in this video I travelled along the 10 mile ‘Lakes Line’ between the main line station at Oxenholme to Windermere. My journey began at Windermere where I learnt more about the history of the line while seeking out the former station buildings as well as looking back at the once impressive track layout. As I travelled back along the line calling at the intermediate stations of Staveley, Burneside, and Kendal, there was evidence all around about how the growth of excursion passengers and local businesses were important to the development of the route. Nowhere was this more evident than at Kendal with its once ‘handsome and substantial’ station that was opened in 1861. Originally built as a double-track main line with through links to destinations as far away as London, it was reduced to a single branch line in May 1973 following a steady decline in the number of tourists using it throughout the 1960’s, along with the suspension of freight traffic in 1972. There are no passing loops or sidings on the route which is now operated under ‘One Train Working with Train Staff’ regulations. Today, Northern Rail operate regular hourly services along the line with some services extending as far as Lancaster, Preston, and Manchester. The line is once again well supported with the vast majority of passengers travelling to the end of the line at Windermere. I hope you enjoy the video.

The last time I rode down this line was a few years ago on 3 carriage 195s which had recently replaced the older trains.

Thanks Hamish. I think class 153’s, 156’s, and 175’s were used on this line prior to the introduction of the 195’s. The line has predominantly been used by DMU’s given the absence of any run round loops throughout the 10 mile section between Oxenholme and Windermere. Best Wishes.

A Kendalian, as I am, remember being at me Grandparents house on Shap Road, watching the small train on the bridge waiting for the signal to change, that would 1960 at the age of 3. Can't remember the Request Stop on that line, still try to look for it.

Great memories Stephen. The line would have been double tracked back in those days although sadly passenger numbers declined during the 1960’s leading to a scaling back of the line from double to single track. It is good to see the line being so well used and supported today. Best Wishes.

We had those request stops on the line between Doncaster and Wakefield on the Dearne Valley Line. One ran through our village of Grimethorpe. They were called halts, and you had to put your hand up or out to signal to the train driver to stop.

Great video. My sister used to live up the private track at Burneside station! Small point of order though, it's pronounced Burne(y)side!!

Many thanks and I am so pleased you enjoyed the video. It is certainly a very picturesque line and it is good to see it being so well supported. With regards the pronunciation of Burneside, I did listen out for the announcement on board the train before I filmed the video. Although with my very broad Westcountry accent I do sometimes struggle with pronouncing some of the place names in this part of the world!. Best Wishes.

The line was lucky to survive Beeching but was vastly slimmed down in the early 70s and in the 80s services were poor, overcrowded with old units. Its revival in the 90s was overdue.

Thanks Duncan. Yes, the original stations particularly at Kendal and Windermere looked very grand in their day and it was therefore very sad to see the photographs from the 1970’s following the scaling back of infrastructure and services along the route. It is good to see that services have improved significantly from those days along with use of the relatively new Civity Class 195 DMU’s on this route connecting with destinations further afield such as Manchester, Preston and Lancaster. Best Wishes.

@@stephenbennettrailways A long way from August 89 with twice as many travellers packed onto a knackered old two car 108 at Oxenholme!!

My mother and stepfather worked at Windermere station in the 1950's. It had a number of platforms and sidings to accommodate trains chartered for day trips. Some came from as far as London. 'All gone now with just a single track and one platform and that also nearly went not that long ago due to cost and funding. I always thought that a monrail between Oxenholme and Windermere would be a better idea and more cost effective to run and maintain.

Should reopen penrith to keswick line during summer ?

I completely agree Terry. I believe that studies were conducted around 4 to 5 years ago looking at the viability of reopening this route but as far as I am aware have not secured funding to date from the DfT.

"Staver-ly" (Stavely) & "Burn-side" (Burneside) - Surely they're pronounced "Stave-lee"" and "Burny-side" !?

@@DaveBartlett Hi Dave, Having spoken to some locals since making this video they tell me that the ‘e’ is pronounced in Burn-e-side. I recently travelled the line and the train announcement now reflects this pronouciation of the station name. Coming from the West Country I often hear place names (particularly in Cornwall) pronounced differently from how we referred to them living locally.

Yes Andy, I was born in Plymouth and moved away around 30 years ago but have never lost the accent. I am going back to Devon & Cornwall in a few months time to revisit some of the railways of my childhood - videos to follow!. Best Wishes, Stephen
