Fascinating post Ian. Though you may be able to shed some light on an experience I have on rare occasions. My eyes are closed and as I focus on the centre of the darkness right in the centre, I see a spot of light with grows stronger and stronger and becomes quite large and intensely bright but looks very very real like i am looking at an object with my eyes opened. Have spoken to a few people about it and eye experts and post something online a few times but nobody has a clue.

Your brain processes this information and presents it in a way that you understand. Entertaining the idea of a 'soul', like a pure source of lucidity, in simple terms: this presentation of information is a series of energy waves, electric signals, etc which all have a measurable difference between their positions, wavelengths, timing, direction, etc. To better explain, if your awareness were just made of a system of numbers, it doesn't matter if there's (A1, B7) or (A28, B34) - what matters is that there is a difference of 6 between A and B. Relativity is the whole world. What most people don't know is that you actually "consciously" choose exactly what you're seeing and feeling. You choose not what the difference between numbers are, but what that difference means. You've been doing it since you were born, perhaps maybe even earlier. It's hard to recognize this because you've never done anything different, so it feels way too natural and automatic. You have taught yourself that a certain pattern of waves means you're looking at an apple, and you've also taught yourself that you don't see anything when your eyes are closed. Your brain isn't really perfect, though. It is possible for you to accidentally measure something wrong, or even purposely decide that a certain pattern means something other than what you've taught yourself to see. Because you are your own lucidity and your lucidity heavily impacts what your brain does, there is a self-confirmation loop. You see a slight bit of light with your eyes closed, and whether you realize you're making the decision or not, you choose to believe "no, I didn't see anything, my eyes are closed." and have it go away, or you decide "yes, I actually see this, even if I don't know why." and it gets stronger, and the fact that it gets stronger makes you go "ah! I AM seeing something!". So, what does it mean when you see it? Brain activity that you are choosing to recognize as a vision, and with practice, you can teach yourself how to see what you want with it and/or use it for help with inducing a lucid dream or astral projection. Note that the process of having a vision vs. visualizing in your head (imagining) is not the same, even though your imagination almost seems like super-weak controllable vision. Trying to think of what you want to see won't really work, you have to "just see it". It could also be you/your brain choosing not to ignore weak radiation activity on your retina, like temperature change, or an afterimage from a lightbulb that you didn't notice was still around until you closed your eyes. Afterimages are a great way of training your ability to control your visions, just look at a lightbulb, then close your eyes so it's just pitch black + an afterimage. You can play with the afterimage and make it look like whatever you want, with enough practice.
