The Second Edition of The Lamps are Going Out, a strategic treatment of World War One, is presented and reviewed. With LGO, players can recreate all of World War One in a single sitting, albeit a long one. Players control either the Triple Entente or the Central Powers as they vie for control of Europe, and the world. Also suitable for solitaire play, the game will not play out the same way twice, as card draws randomize events of the war, and card may or may not appear during game play.

I bought this game at the Compass Games Expo yesterday. I got involved in a four player game and had a lot of fun. There are a few issues with it, but I don't care too much if I can have a fun game.

Hi Scott. I’ve never played this one ftf, but your experience is great feedback. Hermann generally does a great job with his designs, so I’m not surprised you like it. Solitaire - my main mode of play these days - I prefer other choices, but that’s just me. Enjoy!! - Paul

Strategic WWI game comparisons is and under covered topic. I had to take a pick and bought Fatal Alliances. I considered Balance of Powers... But... And then I started looking into "Der Weltkrieg" operational.

Hi Peter. Sounds like you know more about WWI strat games than I do. For now, I’m thinking I’d like more operational or grand tactical, but that’s just me. - Paul

Interesting review. The conclusion was less positive than the accounts of the individual game mechanics had led me to expect. Making a fun game out of a situation that (on this scale) involves very little movement is always going to be a tall order.

Hi Ken. 100% agree. The good part of this game is that they did a good job with the mechanics. Which means that you are fighting WW 1 on something like a realistic level. And therein lies the issue - do you really want to fight WW 1 on a strategic level? For some.., the answer is yes, and this will be a great game. But It’s kind of like anchovies on a pizza…, a very acquired taste. Thanks for writing, Ken. Let me know if you have anymore thoughts! - Paul

Thanks for the review. I like the looks of this game, but didn't pick it up in the first edition. They shouldn't call them the Central Powers, not the Central Allies though, what, can they switch sides or something? Maybe Italy...You mentioned the 'GMT 10-point scale' but this is a Compass game -- lol -- that's amusing - -what's wrong with using the Compass scale for their own games? I guess because it's ordinal? Or probably their scale varies inconsistently from game to game; wouldn't surprise me with Compass.

Hi Marc! If you listen carefully, I think you can tell I was struggling with what to call each of the 4 “Allies”. I ended up with calling them “factions”, but really, what can you call it when they group the US and Czarist Russia together? Thanks for writing Marc. Let me know if you have any more thoughts. - Paul

@@theoakenknight1748 Basically I have to thank you for pointing out the rather repetative combat mechanics. Probably representative of the real deal but not so exciting. Also it seems dissatisfieying that nothing is every eliminated (unless by choice in drastic circumstances). Given the bloody nature of WW1, seems a bit vacant to me. I think the best game on WW1 I've ever played is Fatal Alliances based on the World in Flames engine. cheers and thanks again! Marc

@@marchanna I think the game is modelling the slow, plodding nature of the war rather than actual casualties.
