@@Tattle-by-Tale Well, in the era of 1400$ phones without headphone jacks, a do-it-all laptop with Desktop Grade Graphics, HDD Bay and 2 SSD Slots, it is worth being considered "Dirt Cheap" If you don't want editing power, you don't need to game or do audio editing or use 4K...... Yes, any 400$ system can be do-it-all for you

Yeah but many laptop makers don't bother with thunderbolt in their higher end laptops. Don't ask me why, but it seems rather rare to get full thunderbolt compatibility with higher end stuff. You're happy to prove me wrong on that, but that's just my take.

honestly a $400 laptop unless its a used powerful one, will actually cost you more in the long run because you will end up replacing them more often or you need more stuff to plug in to make it usable/better(eg the Walmart one they reviewed which was great except its screen was horrible).

@Stevey TeeVee Usually gaming laptops deliver more performance or the same for less money. Because personally I don't care about the form factor for me a laptop is a laptop and a gaming laptop, in most cases, is as portable as an overpriced dell xps and fits in just as well as this laptop.

I have been using one of these as my daily driver since October 2019. You need to undervolt the CPU as the stock config thermal throttles very quickly. You can apply a decent overclock to the GPU. Good value and plenty of upgrade options for storage and memory.

I'm using the 7559. It's good and bad. Ddr3, sata m2 instead of nvme, and had to change some of the internal stuffs to become powerful.

I work on the cost side of construction (estimating, etc.), and the number pad is an invaluable tool for me. I'm looking to buy a new laptop, and a number pad is a 'must have' feature. Another must have is the menu key. Yes I have to press the Fn key to access it, but that's way better than not having it. For some occupations / hobbies, these really boost productivity.

I'll be honest, my primary concern with laptops these days... is the battery life. Anything less than 6 hours of actual use, with wifi and brightness at over 75%, simply isn't acceptable in a laptop that isn't aimed at gaming.

If you get the 97 wh version, it will last over 6 hours. I have had it last for 10+ hours, with brigtness about 75% and having multiple word and excel docs open. This is also the version with the i7 and then also a 1650.

I still don't get it with ppl using overly bright screens. Even for my phones, I only brighten thr screen only when needed, but I mostly kept any screen 20-30% brightness. If it is dark room, i completely make it 0%.

Really though? If you're sitting at a desk or in a cafe or something like that how much hassle is it, really, to just plug in a wall wart? I mean, I get it if you want to use it on a bench in the park or something like that or on the train and you don't have an outlet at hand.. but other than that?.. you COULD just carry around a power bank or two? I'd much rather have a lighter thinner laptop and have the OPTION of bringing extra power bank(s) if I know I'm going to need the extended off-grid uptime.. plus the added bonus of that is you don't have to have it attached all the time, only when you need to charge it up. My phone has decent battery life, and normally it'll last up to 4 days (Oneplus 6T) simply because I primarily use it as a glorified alarm clock and leave the data&wifi disabled. But when I was into Pokemon Go with my friends I just bought 2 power banks and those did the job perfectly fine keeping my phone up and running throughout an entire afternoon catching dem pokemans.

This was actually sold as a business laptop the Dell vostro. Very good product highly recommended except mine had the 96w battery and a GTX 1650. I also added more ram and a 1tb ssd

budget is all about who's budget, I'd say for most people going into uni for engineering $1000 for a laptop with a gpu, upgradable ram and storage is a freaking godsend

@@ark_knight true but other laptops often compromise on either battery, expandability, build quality or the CPU or multiples of those, trust me, for CAD work you don't really need much better than a 1050 though again at the relatively low price of $1000 USD its unlikely you'll have much better choice

I bought my 15 7000 for about £800, but it came with 16Gb of RAM, which I use for engineering computer simulations. It works really well for me and is a very quiet machine.

You could get laptops with an equivalent 8250u and a dGPU for $500 for a couple of years now. Pricing has little to do with the CPU brand and nobody ever pays the sticker price on Dell products. They're always heavily "discounted".

The only redeeming quality of the laptop was really that 10th gen CPU. But even then, you dont buy a GTX1050 in 2020. No. Get a gaming laptop. They are really not obnoxious as people make you think. No one really cares unless your backlit keyboard are going rainbow.

@Drew portability You have to remember modern gaming laptops aren't the overpriced overheating nightmares they used to be anymore. Things have come a long way and while you do pay extra for the convenience of something you can just fold up and toss in a backpack, the machines you get now are very capable.

I bought the Inspiron 9735 I'm typing this on two years ago to get me through film school. The only significant difference between this older one and the one in the video is it has slightly better build quality (its a "Black Edition" and is all metal), and it has an MX150 instead of a 1050, which is my biggest disappointment in it. Really though, I love this laptop so much. It successfully handled the video editing I did in film school, has held up well to quite a beating, and after two years the only problem I've had with it is the battery life dwindling (as they often do after a few years) and a replacement battery is like $50. If there are any students or low-budget creatives out there, and they can afford this, I wholeheartedly recommend it. No, you're not going to get the performance you'll get out of an XPS 15, but you'll get ENOUGH performance and save yourself $1000+. I recently built myself a powerful Ryzen editing desktop, but I still use this laptop all the time for basic ingest and cutting, as well as writing and photo editing, since, you know... It's a laptop and it can come with me to shoots and coffee shops.

For the general market, to get a “do everything alright” laptop, $1,000 is probably a pretty common budget. It isn’t a budget laptop, but it is powerful enough that a student or office worker can probably do everything they need to do and a bit more, such as gaming in your downtime. I had an Inspiron in the same market segment about 15 years ago, was perfect for a student with a healthy (not not crazy) budget and who likes games but is not worried about playing the latest and greatest. And the 1050 is probably a bit weak for that segment.

They are there for a good reason. I have a few years old Dell Inspiron 15 laptop with the same charger and when gaming it draws 100+ W easily. Some Dell laptops have smaller bricks and when I've used them before you get a warning about it.

Biggest surprise for me with these 7000 series Inspiron is the chassis, all aluminium used to be something that was a big selling feature of the XPS line. Just adds a lot to the feel of a laptop. 7501 seemed to fix the biggest issue with the 7000 and included 1650ti.

@@nevoyu I've seen $600 laptops that have discrete gpus and touchscreen last year, and this is over $400 more with half the ram. The only thing it has going for it is it has a recent processor, which is fine but not game changing. Edit: Just seen on Amazon it was listed at 830 USD without a discount, which is a lot more respectable of a price for what you get. Also if you look at Dell's website, the midrange model has 16gb of ram but the budget/premium 7000 don't. WTF

I’ve used dell Inspirons my whole life basically for my personal labtop. They are rugged and no frills labtop with the power you need at a reasonable price. Sure it’s heavier than an ultra book but much cheaper lol

I have an Inspiron 15 7501, and it's more than what I could have ever wanted - maybe a tad overpriced, but I had to pay import duty. i7-10750H, 16GB RAM GTX1650Ti, 4GB VRAM 1TB SSD Build quality is amazing and I really like the screen.

Funny enough I'm watching this on an Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming. Had it since Jan. So far I'm extremely pleased with it. I'm not playing any hardcore modern games now, but it has worked well on most of everything I have thrown at it. Great with Mame.

As long as I can upgrade storage and memory I would be very happy with that machine. I got an Inspiron 5000 5 years ago and with a couple light upgrades it’s been fine for how I use it. Light video editing , downloading of movies, some document work and web browsing. And what I have now with the upgrade is the 5th gen i7, 16gb ram, 1tb storage, GeForce 920m. I game on consoles so unless my machine dies I am good, but should it die... I will get something like this.

So I wanna ask again, why bring a laptop to a library? Even if you have to, all libraries already have pc's in them, and if it's a cheap laptop, the celeron pc's there might actually be faster...

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 the 16gb version. Definitely much bulkier. Didnt really have any major problems until it was 3 years of age. (At this time the model was of 4+ years)

I have the version of this laptop with a GTX 1650, 97Wh battery (extending into where the hard drive is on the model shown), and a magnesium chassis. It's marketed differently depending on country. In the UK it's the Inspiron 15 7000 (7590). In some countries it's a Vostro.

This engineer who uses matlab and excel all day long must be really smart. Very few if any can understand the benefits of mixing the ram as he did. Simple minded people like me would remove the laptop ram module, install both modules of the 16gb kit, and put back in the box the laptop module. In both cases you end up with 16b of ram installed and 8gb spare, but there is so much wisdom the way he does it.

Got the dark grey one for $999 last year. ssd and ram can be upgraded. Battery is great especially if you get the 97whr spec. If you're not a hardcore gamer and on a budget, this is a great laptop. I use it for autocad and 3d modeling and the performance is good given the price range and the size. It kinda feels a little bit plasticky but still premium imo. think it's magnesium alloy if I'm not mistaken. The fact that it has a dedicated graphics card and it's super light is why I love it.

Tldr: great laptop, would recommend! I've been using an Inspiron 7577 (same model, just a few years older, 7700hq, 16gb, 512 nvme, 1tb HDD, gtx1060) for the past 2-3 years. It's been a great machine. The ram was only 1 stick, and for about $80 I could populate the other slot for 32gb if I wanted. It's almost got me through the end of college including a year of full stack development at my co-op. While it didn't blow me away with gaming performance in new titles, it at least made them playable (had just gotten assassin's Creed origins, which wouldn't even run on my old desktop. Reasonable, since it was built in 2011). The only thing that's not so great is that the battery has run low on juice, but also an easy fix. Since Dell offers Ubuntu on it's machines, too, it was very easy to dual boot and everything just worked out of the box other than the fingerprint reader, which is notoriously difficult. Love this laptop!!!

While I appreciate the effort, you guys really should have picked something in the $4-600 range to represent the "laptop you'll actually buy." The average Joe on the street probably has an i5, with 8 gb of ram, and maybe a 1tb hard drive. Definitely nothing with dedicated graphics.
