I drive a forklift at a juice processing facility and we use the Toughpad fz-g1 for all inventory and product management. I have never seen one break. Ever. No matter how many times dropped, driven over, or thrown in anger.

These things are great in EMS, there's a local story about using one to break open a window to get into a house. Works as well as a hammer as it does a durable laptop.

Used Toughbooks on the ambulance for years. Left one on the bumper once and it fell off in traffic. Ran over multiple times. Drove back, found it, wiped off the tire tracks, then finished my run ticket like nothing ever happened.

Toughbooks are a lot cheaper than buying a new latitude every few months. I used to use one at an old job. Part of my responsibilities involved crawling into tight, hot, and dirty places to test industrial equipment. Made heavy use of the serial ports, I don't like the way they implemented on this equipment. The last thing I'd want to have to worry about while in a factory crawlspace was a dongle. The port should be built in.

The port would be good for you, but not for someone else. Having more modularity with dongle is better. And if you need the serial port that often you could just leave it plugged in.

@asdrubale bisanzio unfortunately still necessary in a lot of computer networks and datacenters too, expensive gear doesn't get replaced often, so you're usually stuck with DB-9 or RJ-45 serial console ports. Newer gear typically has a USB micro or type-C port in addition to if you're lucky, or only if you're not now, which is handy in that you only need a phone charger cable but sometimes has the same problem I have with dongles: drivers required/doesn't jive with some applications. One example I could cite: diagnosing GPS measurement and timekeeping equipment with a USB dongle means I can't see the PPS (pulse-per-second) output that's usually wired to the RTS/CTS pins that even if your dongle is wired for it USB is not realtime enough for it to be accurate (you could fairly argue that a general purpose OS is not realtime enough either but let's start by not compounding error).

@@GreenCinco12Official point being the add-in card could just have been a serial port. without looking too closely, it looks like they have an adapter cable to get the thickness down. Maybe there wasn't enough height for a serial port without a 'notch' up

I can see the dongle being a wear out / tear out modular support since most professional test equipment has a dongle extension to avoid wearing out or bending contact pins or cross threading connector screws, if you muck it up you just swap out the dongle and not the triple digit $$$ piece of equipment you need to keep using all day long.

It seems significantly less modular than the Toughbook that was reviewed on LTT. But this one has a coiled chargin cable so it's automatically cooler.

These things are beastly. The EMT in my city use those. A story: So I work security in a hospital. Ambulance brought a patient to our psych ward. We had no reason to believe that he was going to be any trouble. He had some previous visits and they had all gone fine. We were there to meet them anyway. The EMT got out of the ambulance and had barely the time to say "He's been calm during the ride" Then the patient straight up attacked him with fists flying. We started running towards the psychotic attacker, we were going to subdue him. We were too far, even if when we were half hearledly preparing for an attack. The EMT:s use Toughbooks to book patients in to the actual hospital, so he had it on hand when he was attacked. The EMT straight up hit the patient on the face with the Toughbook as hard as he could while we were still running for him. And that EMT is not a small man, let me tel you that, The patient got knocked the fuck out, we restrained him and the Toughbook took zero damage in the ordeal.

I only believe you because I know first hand what it feels like to drop a rugged tablet on your foot. I swear a brick would probably hurt less. I got a broken toe for my trouble but the tablet was fine.

I work with one of these every day as a paramedic, and I can attest to their very adequate toughness. Can't say much for performance because we pretty much only run one very light weight app on this computer at work. However, I've got LOTS to say about ergonomics. First, the weight balance(or lack there of), is incredibly annoying. The handle does work well to stabilize on a hard desk surface, but this often must be used as a true LAPtop. In the lap, in a moving vehicle, it is constantly falling over backwards. You must constantly either hold the screen with one hand and do touch input with the other, or hold it down with your palms as you type. Also, at least for our application, the capacitive touch screen is a nightmare. Mostly because of its restrictiveness. We have to have patients sign their name on every report using this screen, and the multi-touch capacitive screen causes constant palm inputs with styluses and many people woth even moderately long fingernails have difficulty using their actual fingertips to touch the screen. Also, not being able to use just any old stylus from the gas station when the provided one inevitably walks off is also annoying.

We used the earlier Gen versions. I forgot one on my response car roof while repacking and got a call. Responded out and stopped hard when I heard rattling on my roof thinking it was the light bar. The laptop flew strait off and hit the Tar. Only thing I had to do was turn the screan back (it had the swivel screan feature) and write a report because it had a minor crack on one of the corners. It performed perfectly other than that. The software requirements eventually exceeded its specs and was donated. The cost was insane. Really hope they are cheaper now. Unless your in a place where breakage is a absolute no no, then it is cheaper in the long run to just replace / repair BROCKEN laptops.

Drill a hole through a piece of wood and loosely thread a zip tie through it. Attach a karabiner clip to the cable tie. Every time you need to use it on your lap, just clip the karabiner to the handle, and clamp the piece of wood between your knees. We done this with the one that we use on our life boat, haven't had one fly overboard since.

I work in IT for a City in Orange County... and these Toughbooks are the standard for PD. And I'll tell you one thing after having to suppor these machines for 2 years -- they're hot garbage. More than 50% of them have issues with the touch screen where it "registeres" a touch, even though it's connected to the base and you're not using touch features. Additionally, the SIM support constantly drops (we've tried different carriers). The RFID scanner on the backside is extremely weak which causes issues with Card auths. Overall bad experience from the 300 we have deployed in PD.

I interned at a city's IT department and worked for the PD some, and while they were a few years old at the time man they weren't good. The cell reception in particular was garbage, got like one bar in the station parking lot.

I worked with Elk Grove PD on these. You're 100% correct. Their mainly sold around that Arbitrator 360 system... Hot, Hot, trash.

@@snip3d Antennas don't matter when your dB is in the mud. I used several antennas upto and including car integrated through the docks. The power reflections putting RF back into the system would overload the modem and shut it down... ALL THE TIME....

The speakers are probably limited to 80dB, because above that you're (in Europe) required to issue Ear Protection, because prolonged exposure will lead to permanent hearing damage.

One huge plus of Toughbooks are you can disinfect them, just use those recommended sanitize wipes. Very important if you work in a place that requires that. Works great for QC, from the warehouse to the lab. Also super important to know all the keyboard shortcuts because the trackpad ain't great the touch screen is meh too.

These were the go-to deployment laptop back when I was in the military. Loved working on and with them, despite being a tad bit slow. Thank god solid state storage is common now because I vividly remember paying premiums on HDD's for these things back in the day.

@@cookie_space The old ones sandwich the hard disk in foam strips for shock proofing, and also have little heater coils for use in cold weather. These can easily be upgraded to 2.5" SATA SSDs now.

I work for a local council and we have probably one of the previous versions of these that the Survey/Engineering Teams use whilst onsite, the extra RAM is great for them to be able to load detailed CAD drawings for Drainage/Flood-map data/Contour maps etc.

I've used Toughbooks since the early 2000s, over the 1G wireless data networks for law enforcement. They are tire chocks. You could throw the thing out of a couple story window and keep going. That is why law enforcement continues to use them. Most departments use them for in-car dispatch. They use serial a lot on very old TAs for their private wireless data networks.

I work as a paramedic and we have the previous version in use. I love the device because it is so robust. We even drove over it once with one of our cars (empty weight about 4 tons) and it didn't have a single scratch. Just the perfect laptop for any situation I've experienced as a paramedic so far.

This product replaces and merges together two previous product lines: the CF-20 and the FZ-G1. They had more overlap than differences, made a lot of sense to replace both with one model.

When I used to work for the MoD, there was a monthly magazine put out, just light articles about the state of the MoD today, gear reviews and such. I remember seeing the double page, full glossy add for the panasonic toughbook. It was a picture of a soldier sat leaning back, with his knees up and the toughbook opened fully, propped on his waist and resting on his legs. With the tagline "If there's a sandstorm, get behind it". Wanted one ever since... until I see the price tag hahaaa

I've worked with those Panasonic Toughpad laptops and tablets at a mine site. They really hold up to daily abuse and last forever. The thing is that they have custom software installed so they aren't for the office workers. These things are in the field all day long, typically the keyboard is mounted in the vehicle and the tablet is removed when the person leaves the vehicle to do the field work. The drawback is price, figure $5K.

That figure goes up quickly when you factor in the cost of the vehicle mounting kits; some of the docking tray and the arm/mounting kits are 2 or 3 grand or more, few hundred for power management, and then another few hundred for external antennas if you're using the pass-through connectors on the dock (pretty much essential if you want GPS and LTE to work when it's inside a metal cage)... the total cost per vehicle can reach past $10K easily. The one saving factor is that most of these manufacturers go to quite extreme lengths to preserve backwards compatibility with older equipment... Panasonic only recently broke compatibility with the CF-19/CF-31 equipment that has been used for over a decade, and you can actually still make their replacements work with adapters that just replace the standard keyboard docks with a shim that fits the old vehicle docks. I know they have that for the CF-33 to fit CF-30/31 docks, not sure about the smaller series (that this G2 replaces).

Worked at an ambulance station couple years back as an IT tech, and maintained their Toughbooks the Paramedics used to record patient data and transmit to the hospitals. One night a bored medic wondered how tough the Toughbooks were, and backed his ambulance (big box truck one) over it, and it collapsed like a cardboard box. He wasn't happy the following day when he was called in to HR and told he owes the company $5.5k for destroying company property intentionally, and how he wants to pay for that.

Interesting. At least in Massachusetts, USA, employers cannot bill employees for damage to equipment. They can fire the employee, but can't bill him (or deduct the cost from payroll). Contractors are a different story.

This is the kind of laptop that Law Enforcement use. I work with a much older model of Panasonic Toughbook that is the same thing. A tablet with a keyboard dock. It has more I/O but is less modular,. These things cost over $2000 starting price.

Ya I don't think they covered it in the video but I am pretty sure you can add a true serial port somewhere on this as you can with almost every other Toughbook product. Edit: nvm, well you always have this one's bigger brother the CF-33.

Yeah, having a real serial port is a "must have" for the field techs at my work. So much of the legacy hardware we maintain uses good 'ol RS-232 for it's low level communication. Sure there is also Ethernet on the box, but you need the serial port to set the IP address in the first place.

Ain’t gonna lie, if I wasn’t leaving the farm position I am at, this laptop would be fantastic for me. Rough jobs require tough equipment and this would be great for everything except for maybe my GIS work.

The Getac rugged laptops and tablets are pretty nice. The model I have come with dual batteries that are hot swappable so theoretically I can be completely portable for the entire life of the laptop

I have a client with a Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 from around 10 years ago, and i had almost smashed that thing against the wall yesterday trying to get Windows to behave with the SSD. Too bad these things cost as much as they do, because we may just switch over to a typical laptop with a serial connector since they only have a couple meters to check with it anymore.

That would be such an upgrade over the POS toghbook my work has given me. I've got a i5-2550M with 8GB of RAM. And the fun part is it's a Toughbook laptop that has a little bit of drop protection, but zero dust and water resistance. And I have to use my work phone's hotspot to get internet.

We have ones that are a little bigger at work. They are tough and work well as a tablet and in the car and desk mounts we have for them. Great for applications where other laptops would die.

I dropped one of the earlier versions of these from 3-1/2-4ish feet the other day at work and the screen shattered. These are actually not that tough. The keyboards fall off all of the time when people are walking around and they accidentally kick them while walking.

Alex, when you do audio comparisons, start the songs at the same time and just mute the one you dont want to hear, this way when going from on to the next, the continuation sounds more natural and the difference is easier to tell :)

Only thing I could see being different is adding batteries to the keyboard next to the track pad to add more weight on the far end to counter balance the screen a little, but otherwise this thing is an absolute unit and from what I know are loved everywhere they're used

The 32GB of RAM is useful for running VMs for machines that interface with older operating systems. The true serial is a serial port most probably directly connected to the laptop via PCI-E and not via USB with a fully compliant UART and DTE signalling.

I know it’s a little older at this point but could you guys review the Lenovo yoga 7i laptop I bought one and really like it but I also don’t know very much about laptops or computers in general and wanted to hear your take on it and hear the perspective of someone who really knows their laptops and computers if you could take it into consideration thank you and continue making the great content you guys put out

I was at a trade show in the mid '90s where they dunked a Toughbook in a 5gal. bucket, then drove over it in a golf cart. Back then it cost between $3-4k.

True serial is A thing when you deal with multibeam sonar. You just need true serial to sync all devices. This tablet looks great to take it on A boat.

What id love to see is a low power Laptop that has seperate batterys so you can take it on a flight with a huge battery, easy hot swappable and give us the option to easily swap the individual 18650's. I just need something to work with, a really lightweight OS like some Linux distributions that can do basic work like browsing and writing text, have a good Keyboard and enough usb's. I am fortunately in the position of being able to own multiple pc's and have a Laptop and for more heavy work loads it simply use one of my tower pc's.

I see ambulance crews carrying these all the time. The rear camera’s pretty much only ever used to like scan documents, and I’ve seen one literally submerged in mud and hosed off and it worked fine. They’re not bulletproof, the screen will still break or dent in registering phantom touches if you don’t take care of it at all, but they’re a lot better to have in an ambulance or fire truck than pretty much anything else.
