We created our first app ‘Universe in a Nutshell’, together with Tim Urban of Wait but Why! You can get it here: Appstore: kgs.link/universe-app-ios Google Playstore: kgs.link/universe-app-android Oh boy. Making an app is hard. It seemed so easy when we started. We underestimated the necessary work load and all the potential problems tenfold - this is not a figure of speech, this took ten times longer than we thought it would. And we are sort of used to working on big projects. So the first update to the app should hopefully be here in the next 24 hours (we are waiting for approval of the update in the app stores) - it will fix a bunch of small things that slipped through. We’ll constantly improve this thing because while it was honestly a horrible nightmare to make, it also was fun and we want to get better at it and make more things in the future. In case you don’t know Wait but Why btw, it is the best and most fun blog on the internet (waitbutwhy.com/2020/09/universe.html) and if you don’t know it you should change that like right now. Tim and I collaborated for the first time in 2013 and we have been good friends ever since. And this thing was something we started talking about years ago. So what is this thing we made and why? You can seamlessly travel from the smallest things in existence, past the coronavirus, human cells and dinosaurs all the way to the largest stars and galaxies and marvel at the whole observable universe. You can learn more about each object or simply enjoy the sheer scale of it all. It’s a fun plaything. The app is inspired by the “scale of the universe” website by the Huang Twins that Tim and I spent a lot of time with when it came out years ago - and felt that it was finally time to create a Wait but Why and Kurzgesagt version. There are no in-app purchases and no ads. All future updates are included! Since this is our first app we would love to hear your feedback so we can improve it over time. Leave us a five star review if you want to support it. Kurzgesagt and all the projects we do are mostly funded by viewers like you. So if you like the app we’ll make more digital things in future! Ok! Thank you for reading - Philipp

Absolutely mind boggling that it would take our fastest plane 500 years to fly around the biggest star. Just imagine a plane leaving in the year 1523 and just now finishing the trip and all the history that happened during that time. Just wow!

It’s not really accurate though. 8.7 light hours are ~9.4 Billion km. The SR-71s top speed is 3500 kph. A sustained speed of 3500 kph for 500 years (3500x24x365x500) would be 15.4 Billion km. The SR-71 would need roughly 307 years at top speed to travel 8.7 light hours. So if it had started it’s trip around Stephenson 2-18 in 1717, when Blackbeard and his Pirates were conducting their operations, it would finish its trip this year.

There is another even bigger category of stars called quasi-stars or black hole stars. They could only form very very early in the history of the universe, when most matter was still spread out evenly (and very very hot), allowing these quasi-stars to grow beyond 67AU in size. So big, in fact, that even when their core went supernova and turned into an intermediate-size black hole, it couldn't blow away the outer shell while the infalling materials radiated enough energy to keep the outer shell from collapsing. Ultimately they run out of material though, and the shell collapses as well. These only lasted 7 million years, so even the likelyhood of ever seeing one at the edge of the visible universe is slim. They cannot be created anymore either, space is mostly empty now compared to just after the big bang. These would also explain the existance of super-massive black holes, as they are too heavy for so early in the universe... but it's also hypothetical. Pretty cool though...

@@user-iw5jb8nl7cfydhf It's not a theory, and people need to quit misappropriating that phrase. It's a hypothesis because of the lack of evidence corroborating the idea (though I'd bet good money on Black Hole Stars having existed since the maths seem solid). A theory is the highest honor a scientific concept can get, so "it's just a theory" is the most annoying colloquialism people use in regards to science.

I remember back when Betelgeuse was the largest star. It is truly amazing to see how far we have gotten in such little time. I remember when Hubble was launched. I remember when NASA had to admit that Hubble wasn't sending back clear photos. So it took 2 years and these were 2 very long years to send a mission to it and basically gave Hubble a pair of eye glasses. Fast forward and a telescope was being built and my uncles name would be attached to it. They launched the James Webb Telescope and put it to where if something went wrong, it would just be lost. My lovely wife asked me why would it be so hard to get to the telescope? I said, well the Saturn 5 rocket was the largest rocket to ever send a person or persons into space. It was almost as tall as the state capital building in Baton Rouge Louisiana where we lived. Now this was just to get man to the moon and back. The JWST is 4 times futher away and I couldn't imagine the fuel for that trip.

There's also a theoretical type of star known as a Quasi Star. These types of stars supposedly existed during the early stages of the Universe, and it's been theorised that these stars didn't get their energy from nuclear fusion, but instead they were powered by black holes in their core, which would slowly eat the star from the inside out.

0:58 fun fact: brown dwarfs have 3 spectre: Y spectre: coldest brown dwarfs wich are just basicly massive planets, they are below 600 celcius and cant emit any light at all T spectre: glowing brown dwarfs, one of them is pretty much shown in the video, most common spectre for brown dwarf population, can get up to 1400 celcius, they still cant host life (exept on roche limit probaby) L spectre: those are quite rare brown dwarfs, these can be ethier young brown dwarfs, or old massive ones, they can get hot up to 2400 celcius, and actually can host life, but they can only keep heavy elements fusion for up to below 100 million years, so the L spectre dwarfs can be called stars

Are you saved? If you are not saved you can be saved right now This is the Gospel of your salvation. This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures We are in the last days according to the Bible. Do you know if you're going to Heaven?? Repent, trust Jesus and God will give you everlasting life. John 3:16 says For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life

NO Offence but i am usually very disappointed to see these social media wannabe stars getting all the attention and fame and money they don''t deserve (or at least what i think). There are many other people who are doing amazing and heroic things that are changing the world for good, for instance scientists, medical professionals, engineers, human rights activists our solders and so on, but some people with very little talent and almost no practical good are getting more fame and money that the real heroes. i may sound a little too critical but thats just my opinion P.S not talking about tik tokers but all the social media platforms

@@alidurrani4645 I totally agree. Can we just throw Trisha paytas into the garbage and replace her with someone who actually puts effort into their content? I’ve seen some tiktokers who have actually humor and talent, but most that are advertised really don’t. But, you didn’t hear that from me, ‘Kay?

Naming things you “discovered” after yourself might give you a standing ovation in a room full of astronomers. But honestly, we’ll never know who you are and 100 years from now your image might appear next to a photo of a star, but you still will not be known.

Can I just say I really love how stars are rendered in this art style? They're so beautifully animated, using a combination of different shades of color and lots of bubbling, amorphous shapes on their surfaces that give them the feel of molten metal, or a more liquid form of fire. It's not "realistic" but it really drives home the idea of these stars being massive spheres of super-hot plasma powered by ongoing fusion reactions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems to say the largest early-life stars (forming via cannibalization) are still smaller than the smallest dying stars that still have a giant phase.

And the soundtrack! Customly composed and tuned to the fine details of every video! I don't know any amateur content that has that. Other informative channels a) do less research b) take stock images as background c) play generic background music in the background (not that b and c are bad, not everyone has the fundings and creative power of those guys). But how much work is in each and every video they make! And an epic marvelous soundtrack that follows the pace of the picture. The end reminded me of Planet Earth II with the music by Hans Zimmer. Amazing!
