Beneath the calm waters of Lake Toba on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, a massive supervolcano is lurking. This geological monster is one of only a handful of volcanoes capable of producing a super-eruption that could catastrophically change the global climate system for decades. So how can we predict the next supervolcano eruption?This is a map of Indonesia. Officially the republic of Indonesia. A country in Southeast Asia and Oceania between the Indian and Pacific oceans. Indonesia consists of over 17 thousand islands, including Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, parts of Borneo and New Guinea. Sumatra is the thir d largest island of indonesia and in the northern Disctrict North Sumatra is Lake Toba located, a large natural lake occupying the caldera of a supervolcano. Possibly the Greatest Volcano on Earth.Besides this supervulcano, the whole geography of Indonesia is dominated by volcanoes that are formed due to subduction zones between the Eurasian plate and the Indo-Australian plate.Some of the volcanoes are notable for their eruptions, for instance, the massive volcano Krakatoa for its global effects in 1883, the Lake Tob a Caldera volcano for its supervolcanic eruption estimated to have occurred 74,000 years before present, which was responsible for six years of volcanic winter, and volcano Mount Tambora for the most violent eruption in recorded history in 1815.

Based on the size and the information from the video that stated that volcanic activity was occurring silently beneath the surface. I would say that there is no way to determine which super volcano is more dangerous. Didn't see any mention of Taupo, just seeing the lake on the map just shows how massive this eruption was. There are still earthquakes under the lake, just small one's and the lake floor does rise and drop. It is still very much alive. An eruption of the size from the past in today's world would be such a devastating event. Glad it is monitored so hopefully there should be plenty of warning

Toba released more sulphuric dioxide than yellowstone. but yellowstone has about 25,000 cubic kilometers of melt and has two magma chambers, one which is a mantle plume and is feeding the chamber above it. I really think they are as bad as each other.

That isn't how supervolcanoes work, but interesting theory. Often times smaller composite volcanoes are either part of the same volcanic system of supervolcanoes or are formed from the same volcanic process like a plade subduction or mantle plume. One volcano erupting can't "alleviate" another volcano's pressure - although rarely this can trigger other eruptions like seen in Iceland with Katla & Eyjaffjallajokull

And the ship stranded on the harbour is also in Palu after the tsunami. This tsunami also unique. We live around 80km from the epicenter of the earthquake but the tsunami reach as high as 5 meter, and even 11-13 meter in some places. Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency predicted that the tsunami will be as high as 30cm. It became much higher because the tsunami triggered by an underwater landslide rather than the earthquake itself. The earthquake also triggered an extreme liquefaction in 3 neighborhoods.

Wow what timing, Samosir island (the one in the middle of lake Toba if you are wondering) was my father's birthplace and i was just there not 2 weeks ago (visiting my grandfather's tomb and just relaxing away from the usual bustling life in the city). Also, my mom is from Bandung, a city in the shadows of an active volcano named mount Tangkuban Perahu (literally means upside down boat), and i am currently living here. Last year i just bought a piece of land right in the slopes of Tangkuban Parahu, and is currently saving to build it into a home i can move into, hopefully in the next 2 years (Why? Because the place is beautiful, around 1200 meters from sea level, good cool air all year round, lotsa greeneries, and yet within a stone's throw from Bandung city should i need to be doing anything in the city). Also fun fact, Bandung city, around 700 meters from sea level, is actually also located in a crater (called Bandung Basin) of Mount Sunda which exploded a long time ago. Is it dangerous? Maybe. But we have been living here for such a long time that we just consider this the way it is. We know its dangers, we will take refuge should the worst happens, but after all that, we'll get back here. Already happened in other volcanoes, the people always returned once the disaster ends. Heck there are even many of us working INSIDE the volcano crater, take Mount Ijen for example, i think there's a documentary about it in KZfaq somewhere. Just an info, y'know, i figured this is a good place to share with y'all, there are a lot of different ways of life in the world. Even within the category of volcano related ways of life, they are all different, for example like Japan, Hawaii, and Indonesia, many of us are living around volcanoes and yet our ways of life are different. The more you know. Cheers folks!

There are various other extremely grating mispronunciations, as well! Unfortunately, these deficiencies severely distract from what would otherwise have been an excellent video! That may seem outlandish, but it could be a minor "band-aid" solution in reducing gases of supervolcanoes - given how it historically has been proposed at places like Yellowstone. Though this would never be able to end "pressure," since that isn't really how volcanoes erupt.

My money is on an eruption of some magnitude in Yellowstone it might not be as cataclysmic as most fear but given the fact that the area experiences an uptick in seismic activity every year, and a measurable amount of groundswell, as well as the fact that a lava dome is growing on the bottom of Yellowstone lake says to me that at the very least a Mount Saint Helen's type eruption or smaller may occur during our lifetime.

@OverseerMoti

By an educated guess, any volcano being artificially relieved from its magma pressure would trigger an eruption from the hole drilled. Subsequently, either the flown material would cool down and plugged the hole, or making the volcano as active as Mount Merapi, Mauna Kea, or those volcanoes in Iceland.

The subject makes it obvious that for humanity to strive for a long term presence in history we may need to populate a few places other than just Earth perhaps the moon and Mars or an unique space station like a giant ball or a ball connected by belts in circles multiple stories thick set in a Lagrange point for an easy as a orbit possible while within distance of asteroid made of mostly of metal. I believe this can happen if a more unified effort by humanity can happen, perhaps with democracy in Russia and China is all it will take as long as one of few instant natural disaster does not interrupt.
