To the film's very little credit, the actors for Zhao, Zuko, and Iroh seem like they're trying to turn in a good performance compared to everyone else's school-play-level acting. Plus, the actress for Yue later became the voice of Asami in "The Legend of Korra", so there's a redemption arc for ya.

Oh yeah! I actually kind of liked the actor who played Iron. He seemed to have watched the show a bit imo. Like he has his mood and like other things down right. And the actor who played Zuko IS a good actor. If you look up what he's done.... So... You have to look else where almost to where it went wrong. Like Dev Patel (Zuko) is an Oscar nominated actor =/

I agree. One of the big problems with this movie is that it's not even bad in a fun way, and Maple and Arianna managed to make it entertaining. I think they were too preoccupied with the movie not following the exact plot beats of the show (it's a movie of less than 2 hours, so things were going to have to be rewritten), when the real issue is that it didn't even try to capture its spirit, but they were fun to watch and were in no way too harsh overall. It was stupid to try to cram an entire season into a single movie, but they still could've done a much better job. The show is fun and humorous, with real human warmth and actual character development. This movie is lusterless, clumsy, rushed and boring. The characters all lack depth and personality, and their interactions are stiff and inauthentic. The only believable emotions portrayed are angst and anger, and that quickly gets old.

This movie is purely a fun watch to completely deconstruct all of the bad decisions that were made. Like at 19:38 he has his glider with him, but in the show he didn't because while he WANTED to fly to get the medicine quicker, there was a storm and if he had flown, he would've gotten struck by lightning, so he opted to run instead. It was a great touch to keep him from flying away whenever he wanted to

If it were even partially just the fandom being unfair because it wasn't quite what we wanted from a live-action adaptation then that would be one thing, there are plenty of animated shows that haven't been quite the same when moved to live-action - but EVERYONE who watches this has the same experience by the end, even people who go in ignoring the fans and attempting to have optimism ALL come out at the end feeling deflated, disappointed and honestly a little broken. every. single. time. Its not just a criminally bad adaptation, its just a straight up bad movie.

So some production info got leaked from a crew member of this film years later who said that the actress playing Katara had a relative who was one of the financial backers of this film who put pressure to cast her so they had to cast her brother as white too. Jessie McCartney was cast as Zuko but M.Night is not an idiot and was one of the few people in the casting pointing out that its asian story and they cast three white people as the lead (the actor playing Aang is also white) so they basically told him he can cast the villains however he wants and as an Indian man chose to have the fire nation be played entirely by Middle Eastern and South Asian actors. Some have suggested this might also be because he did the film because his daughters were fans and he wanted to have Azula, Ty Lee and Mai be played by three South Asian actors for his daughter to see themselves on screen with them being a close nit group of girls. That dose not excuse a bunch of other stuff but that at least is admirable even if it means he made a film where the evil country is entirely darker skinned then the other characters

I don’t know whose idea it was to even shorten a whole season filled with important character building and plot points to THIS. They really cut out everything that made the show beautiful and compelling and interesting. It’s truly a testament to M Night’s talent to make such a viscerally horrific film that is both audibly and visually the equivalent to nails on chalkboard. And that’s the nicest I could possibly be. This show has been my favorite since it originally aired. I have enjoyed so many reactors falling in love with it the way I did and it almost always culminates in them reaching this moment. They HAVE to know. It’s a canon event and I can’t interfere.

Something to note: this abomination was the introduction to the Avatar universe for MANY people. As a result, it made it nearly impossible at the time to introduce new people to the show, I remember basically pleading with people to foeget they ever saw this and PLEASE give the show a chance because the movie absolutely butchered it, but they already had a bad taste in their mouth. Avatar coming to Netflix is the only reason it had a resurgence, I had to stream it illegally whenever I wanted to watch it, so introducing it to anyone was nearly impossible if you didn't own the dvds.

The endless exposition. The bizarre pacing. The weird cuts and editing. The wooden, stilted acting. It's just so, so bad.

okay I saw this when I was 14 in theaters. I knew it was going to be bad from the trailer, but my dad insisted. I actually fell asleep watching from the "saving" the earth benders to when they get to the northern water tribe. I was so... appalled and flabbergasted at how they changed the story and left so many things out that were important to the story and later books. But watching you guys react to this definitely gets subscribe, cause I relate so hard and ya'll are hilarious with the roasting.

Idk why they casted a grown man for Sokka and then the dude doesn't even know how to act. He just reads lines with an emotionless face lmao

Oh thank you ladies, y'all saw the full movie so I never had to. I don't know what cracked me up more, Maple saying " did they even watch the show?!?" Or Ariana saying " who knows? We wouldn't even know what an angry Aang looks like cause you haven't given us fun Aang!" You both summed up the whole reason fans always hated this abomination. And a lot of em never saw it.

I watched this in theaters with some friends. Not even 10 minutes into it we could see it was going to be trash. Some people started leaving but my friends and I decided to stay to experience how bad it truly was. That was an experience I tell you.

Katera NO! - Also, I always thought of the end that the Coi fish used Ang for revenge since Aang didn't have control of the Avatar state. He couldn't even go into it on his own yet.

It took a long time to find humor in this movie but it's there. Aasif Mandvi's delivery of Zhao's lines turns everything he says into the driest, bitchiest sarcasm. The coordinated rock-bending. Especially "Bring me all your elderly!" CRACKS me UP every time! No context for the audience, no explanation of the logic, not even "I'm looking for an elderly MAN". Just out of nowhere. It's hilarious and I'm genuinely considering getting it as a tattoo.

You know what's worse? Me and my cousins actually defending this shit from the time it was announced and we waited for every trailer, counted the days till the superbowl trailer came out, went on comment section wars on youtube to defend it. Until the day it finally premiered and we walked out of that theater like we got molested. None of us would look each other in the eyes, we just talked around it like we didn't see the shit show that it was. MAN! Took us months until one of us finally went "That shit sucked" and finally burst the awkward bubble.

They made a conscious decision to change the pronunciation of the names because they wanted the names to sound more Asian (and less like an American's failed attempt at pronouncing Asian names). Aang probably should be pronounced with an "a" as in "father" (or the "a" in the monk/Dalai Lama name Gyatso) rather than like in "cat".

You guys hit the nail on the head almost immediately. Its not that the movie is so bad per se, its that it is so DISRESPECTFUL to one of the best and mosy beloved tv shows of all time. You dont have to completely retell the exact story, but you also didnt have to shit all over it. Great reaction as always guys, props for having the courage to sit through it

People may hate this film more because it is disrespectful, but it is, no question, objectively BAD. Horrible pacing, voiceover narration explaining every major plot point instead of showing them, dialogue so bad it makes George Lucas look like Shakespeare (his dialogue is clunky, but at least it makes sense), flat acting (the 3 leads feel like they're in a high school play), zero character dimension, and even with a few nice effects, there is no life in the visuals. Even the bending action feels static. Frankly, it's one of the most boring "adventure" movies I've ever seen. I am a fan of a lot of M. Night Shyamalan's work, even a few of his more ridiculed suspense movies, but this is a perfect storm of awful creative choices, whether they were his or the studio's. That said, somehow the soundtrack is beautiful. My theory is that James Newton Howard watched the show for inspiration, rather than footage from this movie.

I'm torn about the pronounciation thing because the original show BUTCHERS all the asian names, and I can't really fault anyone for feeling like they should fix it in the movie adaptation. On the other hand I understand why it would drive fans nuts, and the movie does plenty of mistakes as well.
@melanie62954

Same. I can see why Shyamalan made that choice, especially being of Asian descent himself. If the movie had been any good, I could have gotten on board with the different pronunciations.
