My husband was a fisherman before I met him for 10 yrs. The story's he's told me are insane. From the sea waves taking him into the ocean from a huge wave, to accidents onboard, staff dying onboard of natural causes, fisherman drowning because they didn't know how to swim and picking up dead bodies of another boat going down in the sea. When I was pregnant with my son, he thought of going back or working on an oil rig. I told him I would most likely miscarry if he did that out of worry. No money in the world would be worth your life. I also have a fear of sharks and although there may not be any around Canadian soil, I just would worry about it anyway. My heart goes out to everyone who does this as a career and their families. May they always come back safely.

@@fkrkf You won't find a reference to any Norseman in the Sagas being afraid of venturing the high seas, although about half the ships set out to initially colonise Greenland sunk on the way there. I think it's hard to argue that most hugged the coast, when we know they set up larger settlements in Dublin, Isle of Man, Hebredies, Orkney, Faeroe isles, Shetland, Iceland, Greenland, Nova Scotia, and possibly as far as southwest as some spanish isles off Africa. They maintain close connection in the western isles for a good 700 years. Their fleets (10 000+ strong) would regularly cross the north sea to enforce dominion. You can't do all that if most of your people are too afraid to cross these seas.

Yup Poseidon is not to be messed with. All males from my family work on the rigs and all from Scotland. Two have died. Greg a deep sea diver who died from the decompression and Robert a welder. And apart from Greg bond of them make big money at all.
