The Last Day Of The Volcano & Volcanologist Predicts The Future of Reykjanes - Part I

In the latest update report on the recent volcanic eruption, reporters Alina Maurer and Art Bicnick make their way to the newest place of danger from the volcano. This week, a berm just one kilometre away from the Svartsengi Power Plant and the Blue Lagoon overflowed with lava, which slowly made its way closer to crucial infrastructure. Fire departments from all over the country were on-site fighting the lava streams with cold water to lower the flow speed. This was the first time water was used to control lava flow since the 1973 Heimaey eruption in the Westman Islands!
They also talk to our special guest - one of Iceland's leading volcanologists and petrologists, professor Þorvaldur Þórðarson from the Faculty of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland. He has studied Icelandic volcanoes for nearly 40 years. Þorvaldur has been one of the most prominent voices in Icelandic media since the volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula picked up in 2021.

Professor Throvalder rocks ! I have been following his talks since land uplift started at Svartsengi. He's right, cooling lava with water will only affect the surface. The inside remains (somewhat) fluid and poses an unstoppable force

Probably a good idea for the government to start setting aside money to fund the future building of protective berms around the capital region. As he said, it's only a matter of time before the volcanic systems nearest there, like Krysuvík, will erupt.

That was really interesting to listen to. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a more in depth interesting chat about Volcanoes. It’s almost sad news to hear that this current event will be over very soon. A question from California viewer. I'm sure the authorities have consider this. By the videos I see the lava is coming out in one direction. Why can't the opposite wall of the volcano be blown up to change the direction? If the lava could be diverted even for a short time maybe the lava could harden and stop flowing toward the plant. Don't know where they are getting all that dirt for the berm but there is a hill right there. Is this the wrong type or legally can't be used?

Thank you Prof. for explanations. I was wondering if they later use sea water, will the salt content have a lasting effect on rehabilitation when decades later all is cooled magma flow fields and vegetation returns? Or does ir all just evaporate in the extreme heat?

Iceland sits on a rift, the lava is always moving around and breaking out and they can only guess the when, they can't guess the how or what is going to be the end results. We have no control over the lava.

I heard him give different scenarios and with each of them did say it could or couldn't. If a learned person gives a view using the word I think, I assume that it's his view based on his years of expertise and that he acknowledged the possibility of it not happening otherwise he would've said I know this will definitely happen. If it doesn't happen it doesn't diminish all the knowledge and years of hard work he has accumulated in one second.

Sofar, most eruptions surprised us in some ways. It is almost inpredictable to know what is going on at depths of several kilometres. Everytime it changes. He does his best, with the knowledge we have today.
