It's the FINAL day on this French motorcycle road trip through France on my BMW 1250GS
Today I board the ferry back to Poole, but first I've got to grab some "French Pastry's!" :-)
Join me for Day 7 and I hope you find the "lessons" I learned at the end helpful :-)
PS. Can you make any suggestions on where I should go next?
Best regards... Tony

This is why I love KZfaq! I can watch some random fella who I would never meet in real life take his first continental biking trip and its strangely interesting and entertaining! Great series. Blasted through all episodes and enjoyed it! Thanks for producing the content!

Your video format is just right. You seem to be yourself and natural. Good conversation (monologue) to share thoughts is as important as filming the scenery. Thanks. P.S. For the next trips you may enjoy Picos de Europa in the northern Spain (Ferry to Santander). Or a Pyrenees trip from San Sebastian (good food Mecca) to Barcelona over cols d'Aubisque, Turmalet and Aspin. Stop at Bagneres-du-Luchon, then exploring the Spanish Pyrenees along N-260... Interesting travel possibilities are endless. Oh, and thanks for not asking for likes :). Cheers.

Excellent piece of work LR, so real!….i remember my first trip to France when everything was kinda new and completely alien, was lovely. Now i do a few trips a year and go much much further, love it. I've been touring Europe for many years, particularly France. There's so much to see. I introduced touring to some friends and we've been on a few tours. I would recommend Pont Du Gard, Oradour-sur-Glane, Gorges du Verdon and Castallane to Port Grimaud. I really enjoyed your road trip which has only confirmed that I need to do another trip myself. My partner won't go on the back of my bike either which is a shame. Looking forward to watch more of your videos.

Excellent first series and I can see a Star is Born 😂. Your relaxed, informative manner and your genuine interest in what you are seeing and doing shine thru and make for very entertaining viewing. I’ve watched a lot of bike related videos on KZfaq and yours is a breath of fresh air. Please keep them coming. I’m a biker of old and now that I’m retired I have completed several European tours , that have confirmed the old adage that ‘travel broadens the mind’. I’d strongly recommend Spain: great roads, wonderful scenery and lots to see (plus lovely people and delicious food). Also check out Scott ergonomic rain jackets and trousers: compact, light, inexpensive and essential for European riding. Safe travels.

@@laterriderI’m not sure that more riding shots would help. You have a refreshing individual style, adding lots of road mileage might dilute that and make your videos less individual. You’ve fallen on a formula that I think is original and good. The beauty of being a Euro touring debutant is that you don’t have to worry about where to go next, there are so many great places out there to visit and so many great routes to ride you could easily just start by putting on a blindfold and putting a pin in a map. The well known big name destinations are not always the best and adding them to your plans can lead to busy roads and crowded places.

Thanks for sharing the experience of your first venture abroad by bike. Many of your ‘thoughts’ resonated with me from my first trip many many years ago. Although in France you can normally find a hotel - it did take until 10.15pm on one trip!! Thankfully my wife does join me on most trips but doesn’t like the big mileage days which can be limiting on distance/time sometimes - the way we manage this is for me to ride the full distance to final destination in two to three days, then she flies via a cheap airline to a local airport, I pick her up and we take a week or so riding home visiting places of interest on the way back. I think you would like Germany (we’ve done the Nursery Rhyme Route’ and ‘Romantic Route’ for fun which takes you through lots of interesting small towns. Also consider Switzerland, my wife’s favourite!

I enjoyed this series (watched the last three from Angers onwards), well presented in a relaxed style. Do be careful with Stop signs in France - if the police see you not stop they will fine you, your wheels have to be stopped clearly. I think you went straight over one in Angers! As far as suggestions are concerned, I would suggest Corsica, although quite a schlepp through France and of course another slippery deck ferry!! But it is beautiful with lots of windy roads (I mean not straight, rather than fast moving air). Thanks for taking the trouble to do these videos, much appreciated.

Really enjoyed this series - came across your channel by accident. Fantastic quality especially as you are a new channel. I do hope you don’t change as so many Vloggers do. I’ve done a few solo bike trips the best so far is definitely the Swiss Alps (also part inspired by Baron Von Grumble 😀) That’s an amazing place to ride - more about the ride though rather than visiting places off the bike. If you want to get really good quality riding kit and advice a trip to Motolegends in Guildford is definitely money well spent. It’s not your usual bike clothing store though.

Hi Tony, really enjoyed the series, very well put together. Great tip on Atlas Obscura. Couldnt agree more regarding worrying about accomodation, although its easier said than done and it's nice to know you have secure parking lined up in advance. At the risk of repeating advice others have given, Tourenfahrer is a German magazine that have a good route planner on their website which includes info about biker-friendly hotels. The ability to search keywords in reviews on a "popular hotel booking site" is also handy for figuring out the parking situation in advance. My recommendations for your list are the French Alps (around Briancon), the Dolomites and the Grossglockner pass in Austria. I did a 6500km trip around the Alps 2 years ago and made every mistake imaginable, including the ones you mentioned and also dropping the bike, TWICE! It's all part of the fun. Looking forward to more videos.

Next trip do Germany / Austria. I don't dislike France but in terms of welcome to bikers Germany is on the next level, and I suspect you may find it a little cheaper. My only other suggestion, find a couple of people to go with. Solo tours are great, but slightly longer ones, 10 days for example for a decent Austrian trip, are really much nicer with a couple of others to take some of the workload off you. Otherwise, look forward to seeing your next trip!

Hi mate. I like your style and honesty. We have all worried about dropping our bikes, I’ve been riding for over 45 yrs and it still concerns me…especially as one gets older. It’s just that you don’t want to feel a prat, but it happens. I’ve lost my footing on car ferries which have given me a mild “heart attack”. My wife doesn’t go on my bikes and I’ve really tried to encourage her, buts it’s just not her thing. I’m a social animal and doing a trip on my own is not for me, but I’d ride with you on a holiday trip. The Italian Lakes are beautiful….Lake Garda.

That was an enjoyable little series, especially seeing you ride through my old haunts (St Mathurin) between Saumur and Angers; although you missed the Château in Angers! The Atlantic coast (côte sauvage) - Noirmoutier/Les Sables d'Ollone/La Tranche sur Mer/La Rochelle/Rochefort/Royan could make a good trip. As someone else says, there are plenty of chambres d'hôtes to stay in so you avoid the big chain hotels. One important tip: you don't normally pronounce the last letter in French words (Angers is pronounced 'on-jay'; Blois is 'blwah' 😉

I have enjoyed your mini series. It's always great to see people off on their first trip. I agree with most of your points learnt unless you are travelling in a bigger group, when you really need to put some thought into accommodation. The mileage is really important. I think you tour in a similar way to me and my buddies. We call it 'coffee & cake' touring! We want to see things and have periods of fast riding but generally chug around taking it all in. I've never toured solo and probably wouldn't as I like sharing the experience. Never say never, though! I can recommend the Picos De Europa and the Pyrenees. Neither will disappoint. If you wanted something a little bit closer, maybe The Ardennes in Belgium.

Really enjoyed your France trip and I'm happy you had a fab time :). Your videos really inspired me to make my own trips, I've just ordered a BMW f850 GS Adventure with the idea to do some road trips myself, I live in Switzerland so there lots of great places to see and easily accessible surrounding countries to explore. What I like about your videos was that you shared your fears and at times nervous feelings with us. I'm new to Adv bikes and to be honest I'm really nervous too, in case I drop the bike, make a newbie mistake or something else haha. Entering the motorbike world seemed very daunting to me it seemed like everyone was very experienced and confined with their bikes, but your videos have given me more confidence and I hope to meet people similar to yourself along my journeys :). Thank you so much for sharing your trip with everyone it was awesome and you seem such a genuine friendly guy! As for your future trips maybe Spain, or somewhere I hope to go, Denmark & Sweden. @@Life_of_James’as big as I can get’. With touring bikes bigger does not necessarily mean better. A couple of years ago I downsized from an ST1300 to a 500X and find the smaller bike suits my touring style so much better I’ve almost doubled my annual mileage. I must add that your suggestions of places to visit come straight from a KZfaq influencer’s list of places to promote. There are so many other places out there, you must not allow yourself to be blinkered into thinking that the ‘famous’ places are the best.

@@davidmatthews3093 of course, a bigger bike isn’t always better. Yes, there are many other places to visit but I’ve always wanted to go to Scandinavia, doesn’t matter whether it’s an influencers idea it doesn’t mean us folks cant enjoy it too. I personally wouldn’t go riding off road in a far away country yet because I don’t t have the skills or experience for that, I just want to enjoy my bike. Spain recommended - and don't get trapped into just Picos region (great as it is). Riding through France can add a couple of days/hotels each way (and the routes are a bit boring) so compare the admittedly expensive direct overnight ferry for cost vs time etc. Central berth, no windows is best - slept 14hr after taking seasickness tablet, perfect. And unlikely to need bulky wet weather gear. I live in Valencia/Alicante region and the roads inland are awesome. Remember south is too hot in summer so keep outside peak summer time. I'm also recently restarted on 2 wheels so taking it easy through the twisties on a big old beema. Did Moraira- Jaen-Seville-Cadiz-Jerez and others on way back last year. Even in May was a bit too hot.

May I politely suggest a review of 'bike nights/meets' in the UK. Most are within a days ride, maybe an overnight thrown in if its a long trip. Reason I suggest UK bike nights is because while we all want to do European tours, how many of us truly do? I suspect "not that many" in all reality. But I do think most of us will make an effort to go to a decent 'bike night/meet'. Best one I have been to is Tuesday evening on Poole Quay.

The issue with the Garmin Nav 6 is the screen delaminates when exposed to colder weather and it becomes unusable. Garmin will replace the unit if you go via your dealer, I had mine replaced already and some I have heard have had them replaced already a few times. Garmin recognizes the fault and replaces it. The Garmin Zumo XT does not suffer from this fault apparently however will not sit as nice on the bike as the Nav 6 so many of us just put up with it.
