Musician Ryuichi Sakamoto , who was described as "the world's Sakamoto," passed away at a hospital in Tokyo on March 28. he is 71 years old. He is from Tokyo. His funeral was held at his family funeral. In the 1980s, he produced world-famous hits with the three-piece band "Yellow Magic Orchestra" (YMO), and in 1988 he became the first Japanese to win the Academy Award for Best Original Score for the American movie "The Last Emperor." Although he battled cancer in his later years, he remained passionate about making music.

I disliked the fact Bernardo Bertolucci (Last Tango in Paris) directed this film Another film which Bertolucci did a disservice for because of its direction - The Sheltering Sky, a Paul Bowles book made into a corny Hollywood film (with nice visuals), Paul Bowles himself disowned the adaptation

@@nuffzed2001 Yeah, as much as I love The Last Emperor, and The Conformist, I will admit Bertolucci is a hit and miss director. For example, I really could not stand The Dreamers and the aforementioned Last Tango in Paris. Also his shady behavior in latter film, makes me dislike that film more.

It's been said the greatest challenge to understanding Chinese history is that there is so much of it. This beautiful film manages to take us through seven turbulent decades in China with every one of its 163 minutes a feast for the eye.

This is such a beautiful movie. I saw it alone in the theater when I was eleven years old. I remember being glued to the screen. So did I, back then an eleven year old can go watch a show by themselves and no one said a thing, then Empire of the Sun same year, I enjoy sweating my butt off mowing lawns so i could pay my own way to watch the shows that year of 87. I was flipping channels last week an The Last Emperor was on, not sure what channel it was but I was tuned in as I was back in 87, my wife who never saw it or was just barely arriving in the US have not even heard of it. I want her to watch Empire of the Sun also but she was not into it but she sure loves watchin Gunsmoke and the Riflemen everyday, knows all the actors and when they live or died, go figure.

@@Gildedbutterfly1976 I agree to a point, but there are still creative people out there making amazing movies. There are still big name actors taking parts in smaller, independent movies because they believe in the work. Look at the Safdie brothers, killing it. Sandler was great in Uncut Gems. That would've been a movie Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel would have loved.

My father took me to see this in 1988 in preparation for our trip to China. It was - and is - stunningly beautiful even to a small-town 14-year-old boy. A few months later we were inside the Forbidden City and all I could think about was Pu Yi running around, alone amid the sycophants, and throwing his pet mouse at the gate that held him in.

Sorry about replying now to your comment, but I have just read it. Now your comment is old too ! Surprise ! Glad you like the film, but it seems you must miss plenty of excellent films just because they are "old", as if that meant an automatic burden or downgrade, and they are not worth watching anymore. GL enjoying cinema and having cinema culture. My humble advice: give more chances to old movies, you may find many more "Last Emperors".

The movie humanized Puyi. Puyi was a boy born in royalty & later became a useful tool for the Japanese occupation of Manchuria but there was something more to that. He was a boy captive in his own family legacy. He could not think for himself nor could he leave his palace. He was a trapped bird. A depressed boy wanting affection from the people around him. He wanted to be treated as a human being not as a tool in a power struggle. Although he had agency when he chose to represent manchuko, the Japanese colonial occupation of Manchuria regardless of his intentions. Funny enough, The PRC treated him differently though. Mostly one would kill the king to end any attempts of his followers fighting on his behalf because to his follower he seen as a god. Sort of like what the red army did to the Tsar. Mao OTOH granted him freedom and asked Puyi to live without special privileges like a regular citizen. A kind gesture.
@kingkongPl
@kingkongPl 9 ай бұрын
More than 100 mln people died due to Mao's actions. He was a bigger monster than any human ever existed. There is nothing kind about him. Just a simple logic. Killing Puyi would make him immortal, making him a regular citizen shows everyone that he is just a human and not a God.

irl Pu Yi was extremely cruel to his eunuchs and would torture, humiliate and flog them for his own entertainment even as a small child. My only criticism is that the movie really downplayed how much he abused his power. But I guess his crimes didnt go unanswered as the Communist regime locked him up for ten years as a war criminal.

The Communist do far worse if that is true. But I suspect what you say is the work of Chinese Communists slandering his legacy.

The movie was based on the book that Puyi wrote while he was in Fushun

Finally! The comment i was looking for. Puyi was a monster to say the least. This movie probably didn't even scratch the surface of how awful and cruel he really was. I haven't seen it yet and i don't think I will. I don't think I can stand watching his deeds be downplayed like countless people didn't suffer and die because of him. But like I said I haven't watched it, so maybe it's not that bad. I'm not willing to find out tho.

it still bugs me the teenage version of Puyi spoke with a different accent compared with the boy version and the adult version, as if his English skills has regressed as he grew up, then suddenly became fluent again in adulthood.

It takes a child to raze a village. Kidding. I have no historical context for that joke... and this was the best I could do, not knowing the story or having time to delve into it. Can't be expert in everything, right? Maybe one of you has a suggestion for the best candidate to fit this joke? > __________ . One emperor built a temple with levels and gates and all symbolic of the perfection of heaven to point people there and even instituted a "border sacrifice" as in, the border between earth and heaven. They sacrificed one of the most important animals they had in the stone and late bronze age in the context of animal husbandry and tradition but they had other ceremonies too. Some of them lost but they had a lot in common with the Jews it seemed at that point... a perfect convergence... maybe not, but still indicative that religion is hardwired in us and follows a pattern to point us upward to our maker.
