I've also shot with the StreetPan and the Lomography Berlin film stocks which I've enjoyed a lot but I've found that with the StreetPan and the unusual grain structure of it you really have to shoot it with a theme in mind. How well built are the new MP compared to the classic M:s, like M3? I've had the M3, M4-2, M5, M6 and M6TTL, and the older they get the better the build. The M6 for example is in my opinion overrated in build (clunky shutter) and viewfinder (bad flare resistance). Does the contemporary Leica stand up to the older MP and the classic M3 (which IMO is the best Leica of them all)? Thx.

What (other than personal need and preference) makes the MP “greater” than the M-A? Arguably, for those who don’t need a light meter, the M-A has greater value because less plastic.
@Edgy01

The nice feature of the MP over the M-A is that you can leave out the battery and --viola! You have an M-A!
@lugentaubner6853
@lugentaubner6853 3 жыл бұрын
@@Edgy01 No, what you then have is an M-A with a cheap plastic ISO wheel in the back and a useless battery compartment in the front that makes the camera look and feel way less perfect than it could. If you don’t mind that, fine; but it is precisely why some choose the M-A over the MP. Which takes us back to my point about personal preference. Talk of “the last great film camera” is misleading here. It not only implies that the MP is “greater” than the M-A, which is questionable, but also that the M-A isn’t even among the great film cameras, which is ridiculous.

@jonmnelson
@jonmnelson 3 жыл бұрын
@@DarrylCarey Hi Darryl. I got a very nice copy on eBay from a seller in Japan. The M5 is probably the most “reasonably” priced M series, but it looks like the prices are going up on that too now. I like that it’s different from the others and enjoy shooting with it. I particularly like the shutter speed dial that hangs over the front edge of the body, making it easy to change without having to take my eye from the eyepiece. No regrets. I do have a number of other cameras (don’t we all!), all of which work very well. That’s one thing I love about film cameras - they all have the same “megapixels” and same core technology, which is about exposing film to light. It’s so easy to get caught up in gear acquisition, thinking that new camera/lens/whatever will make all the difference in the images we capture. My grandfather was an avid golfer and used to say about equipment, “It’s the fool, not the tool.” I think that applies to cameras as well.

HP5 or the Tri X has to be the first roll, if you look back in 10/15 years and it’s some random film you didn’t like you’ll be disappointed

I came back to this video after buying a new Leica MA and a Leica MP. The leica MA oozes sheer build quality and class and the MP black paint looks plasticky. Framelines of the MA are uninterrupted by meter and is a joy to use. Seems clearer and brighter than the MP. There is dearth of good content on leica cameras and lenses on KZfaq. For a while I thought you’d stepped up to it with content and images. Seems not. We do what we love anyway. This review you did was a landmark MP review though.

Hi Baladino, hope you are enjoying your new cameras. I have yet to use a MA, maybe one day😉 As for me and my Leica cameras, I have been crazy busy with work (video) and some projects I have have been shooting for a friend overseas who can not visit NZ. This sadly gives me very little spare time to shoot my Leica cameras, I have not even shot a roll of film on my MP. Now its winter time in NZ, my work slows down which has give me more personal time. Plus I wanted to help the companies of the products I have sent and also use for work. I have a few more videos I need to shoot and edit on some products and then I will get back to my film/digital Leica videos. I really appreciate your honest comment.

@@DarrylCarey Darryl, I hope I didn’t sound harsh. Perhaps some frustration emergent seeing a person who’s most qualified to review leica gear and lenses and take good images to boot doesn’t sound like he’s having fun and has a lot to distraction to deal with. Take care of yourself Darryl. Regards to you and yours.

Hey, I also got the same 2 film holders from Kodak ( the black for my BW and the blue/yellow for my color film ) they where released at the beginning of this year I think. I find them on the heavy side, so I just carry one of them, but I do love them. Nice unboxing video. Do you have any thoughts on rumors of a new "budget" film camera from Leica ?
@DarrylCarey

Hi Cristian, not heard much about the rumoured film camera, budget and Leica are not normally in the same sentence 😉 So I was a little lost when I heard the rumour, they are still making the MP and M-A. lets hope we get some more news on this rumour soon.

Funny to see while Apple is trying to make their packaging smaller, Leica is doing the exact opposite. That box is just going to take way too much space in storage, especially for those living where space is precious....
