The thing is though, most other decently priced boards out there come with a pbt space bar, even cheap keycap sets. And they don't all have a warped space bar, I think realforce can figure something out for that $250...

@@JackOfHarts96 I'm not so sure, my Anne Pro 2's space bar feels pretty much identical to the other caps, but maybe it's a really good abs bar. On my Vortex Race 3 it's definitely pbt, but it's slightly warped

I absolutely adore my HHKB and have a difficult time transitioning back to other keyboards now. I am an avid Linux command line user and the layout is golden for this purpose. However, for gaming, I do have a standard left hand half keyboard to workaround the downfalls of gaming on this board. I also utilize a 10 key on the side with arrow keys for the same reason.

Being a HHKB user for the last 21 years. Earlier days of my college, it was a bit off and on but never used it that much. But been using ONLY the blank version for the last 11ish years since. Also, this is one of those keyboards where once you really learn it well, you won’t absolutely need to look at the keyboard. In fact if you are a person who needs to look on keyboard once in a while, this keyboard will make you go nuts. I don’t have any other keyboards and I can say that once you become super comfortable with this keyboard, no other keyboard will work for you. This doesn’t mean other keyboards are not as good. It is just that while learning this keyboard as a programmer was reasonably difficult, “unlearning” it is extremely difficult. Once you get used to this it is super hard to go other way. Over the last 10 years, I had to get 2 of these, one at home, one at office. To people who are worried about quality, these are some well built keyboards. I can tell you that the oldest one I have is the one I bought about 11 years ago and it still works without any issue. Up until about 1-2 years ago, I sold the then 16 year old one and got the hybrid one. Even that was running fine. I can’t yet comment on how good the hybrid one is.

8:04: With two monitors, it may actually be easier to have it in the middle, as in my setup, if I were to use my desk, there would be monitors on either side. I use a separate keyboard tray, though, so cable placement is pretty irrelevant for me in practical terms. The main reason I like the HHKB is the UNIX keyboard layout with the control key in place of the caps lock key and no windows logo on the meta keys. There are not many other keyboards which provide this combination, unfortunately.

there is a simple reason for using ABS instead of PBT for the spacebar. For longer keys like the 2.25U shifts, 2.5U shifts, 6.25U spacebar and 7U spacebar, the PBT will definitely shrink and warp in the cooling part of the injection moulding process, and it’s very hard to get them all straight. That’s all there is to it.

I’ve been using an HHKB for around one year now and will probably never go back to another keyboard. The Topre switches and layout is perfect. Word of warning though, this thing is insanely overpriced for what it is. I’d suggest finding a preowned one on eBay for less than 170. I got mine from a Japanese proxy for 160 during an amazon japan sale. NEVER pay full price for a Topre board

The HHKB Lite2 is also almost as good, despite being a fourth of the price. The main problem is the cable, which I have not yet found a way to order replacements for and which prompted my to get the Pro2 when it started failing. The cable **did** last about at least 4 years, however (I don't remember exactly when I got it), despite constantly being in transport.

Ok so I’m super late but the reason there are no arrows is because this keyboard was created for Linux and Unix users (keep in mind when this thing came out and also how many programmers use Vim) so in Unix and Linux you navigate left, up, down, and right by using the h, j, k, l keys. So for someone who is a Unix or Linux power user, the arrow keys are just extra space and not necessary. (I’m in university and basically all my programming assignments are pulled, cloned, and submitted using a Linux terminal, still prefer arrow keys but I can live without them if all I’m doing is using Linux) Edit: The reason the layout is that was is probably because for those who are new to Linux or that don’t use it altogether in favor windows or Mac, that layout is just more intuitive in comparison to h, j, k, l. Also the reason they probably won’t ever add arrow keys is because the appeal of this keyboard is that all keys can be reached from the home row, and their jankey layout is a compromise for non Linux users

@_NaLo_ 5 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to mention that to my knowledge PBT spacebars have only become standard in recent years due to improvements in manufacturing (see deskthority discussion on the issues with them deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?t=17438 ). The HHKB Pro 2 was released in 2006 and back then ABS spacebars were the norm. Also I really don't agree with your criticism of the arrow cluster, being able to use the arrows with one hand and doing so fairly ergonomically is one of the main reasons I love this keyboard.

HOW is removing printed keyboards useful, i have a set of blank keycaps but its only to look cool, it is way more convienient to associate keys with letters in certain applications and look at the keyboard. by having nothing, you can only rely on remembering where the keys are and it can be a disadvantage(particularly for macros under layers) and its not like you are "losing compatibility" because windows boards do fine on mac systems just the print on a keycap is different. You only get these for style points

The switches do have a sort of hyper following, so I get that someone may find it overrated, but the build quality is just fine in my experience. It doesn't feel cheap at all, there's no flex in the case, the whole thing is really sturdy. The only reason I can think of that someone would call it cheap is that it doesn't have a metal plate like its Topre counterparts (Realforce, etc.).

Really the HHKB is good but it's not even close to the last keyboard you'd ever buy. It's a generic board with a seemingly boring layout, it's not ergonomic and the key switches are a case of love or hate. Considering the price it's a risk for those who are not into the keyboard scene. Anything with the board slightly separated down the middle and each half slightly angled with your preferred layout 104 / TKL / 60% / 40% with your preferred switch type is always better than a slab style 60% I like to use a 40% for usual browsing and an ergoboard for playing games to help with strain on the arms for extended sessions.

I disagree with most said here, the arrow cluster is one of the best features of the HHKB, easy accessible form the home row, closely located to the dedicated function key, it's brilliant. PBT Spacebars are still a tricky process, PFU went for ABS to avoid warping. The ABS case adds smoothness to the typing feel, since you don't have a metal case with backplate, that actually is a plus many people tend to forget. The HHKB is by far the best out of the box keyboard out there, once you get used to the layout there is no way back. WASD keys as arrow cluster makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, since it will dramatically interfere with your regular editing workflows. Pretty much all IDEs, editors and other programms for text input and manipulation are build around the fact that your arrow cluster is located on your right hand side and not on your left, WASD arrow cluster will completely mess you up. Also Realforce is not a "Gaming" subsidiary, what the hell are you talking about? It's not even a subsidiary in the first place. It's a completely different brand. Realforce is a Topre brand, PFU produces the HHKB using Topre switches and is actually owned by Fujitsu. Next time, do your homework.
