Brief history of the nests:
2016 Woodland Trust acquire the Loch Arkaig ancient Caledonian rainforest remnant and manage it in partnership with Arkaig Community Forest.
2017 A nest cam is installed on a refurbished Osprey nest. A young male Louis and a young female Aila take up residence and raise one male chick to fledging: Lachlan JH4. 2018 Louis & Aila return but a Pine Marten steals all their eggs.
2019 Louis & Aila return and raise two female chicks to fledging: Mallie JJ0 and Rannoch JJ2.
2020 Louis & Aila return and raise two male and one female chicks to fledging: Doddie JJ6; Vera JJ8 and Captain JJ7.
2021 Louis returns but sadly Aila doesn't. Louis takes up residence on a new nest with a new mate Dorcha and they raise two male chicks to fledging: Aspen LW3 and Alder LW4. This is designated Nest Two, no one takes up residence on Nest One.
2022 Woodland Trust install a nest cam on Nest Two. Louis & Dorcha return and raise two female chicks to fledging: Willow LW5 and Sarafina LW6. Still no residents on Nest One.
2023 Louis & Dorcha return, and raise one male chicks to fledging: Ludo LY7. No residents on Nest One but male Garry LV0 spent a lot of time flirting with Affric 152 despite her mate Prince still being around.
The Woodland Trust nest cam was installed by Wildlife Windows in Arkaig Community Forest, it is funded by The People's Postcode Lottery and operates on wifi provided by Locheilnet. Watch the livestream 24/7.

Can you please explain the reason for the chicks being removed? I tried to access the woodland trust website but can't get through. I've seen them being fed right up to them being removed, which is the reason i ask

Bitter sweet! So sad we can't watch the chicks fledge but so happy we have people who watch and care, meaning these amazing birds have a future. Removing the young will also help the parents get strong again and hopefully carry on breeding for years to come. Thank you so much for sharing, it's been wonderful.

Fly high and prosper little ones. It's been a tough time for the nest this year between losing Bob 3, the bullying by the dominant chick and now the concern over Louis and the lack of food for survival. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision to intervene, but in my view it was the right one. These precious creatures must be cherished. Thanks for all the video/ updates. Here's to a more successful year in 2025.

Dear Geemeff! My heart aches for the family, I watch the events through my tears. Saving the chicks is the best idea in this situation. I'm just wondering if there is no bird rescue institute in Scotland, or competent individuals who would raise the two chicks with great love and thus stay in their birthplace until their migration, without a trip to Spain and torture?

Watching the chicks all night, this was such a bittersweet moment with Louis arriving ❤ Glad you made this clip @Geemeff ❣ I took lots of screenshots to make into a gif, guess I don't need to now. Still concerned for chick1, he so frightened of sibling, hopefully the people that care for them will make sure he gets plenty food. Whatever ails Louis, I pray it clears up soon & he is fit enough for a long migration. My heart flies to Dorcha, she has fought through this unseasonal bad weather to keep chicks warm. Look forward to updates on the chicks, it's hard to say goodbye, they are lucky the translocation project is happening on 10 July.

I’m extremely sad for this nest. I started watching Louis and Aila (her last season) and their successful raising of the three chicks on Nest 1. Then Louis transitioning to nest 2 with his new mate Dorcha when Aila did not return. We are so lucky to have access to these nests, but it can be so hard at times. Good Luck little ones!

Woodland Trust Scotland update - Monday 1st July 2024 8am The chicks are to be removed from the nest this morning to go into a translocation programme reintroducing ospreys to an area in Spain. The food supply to the nest has not been keeping up with their needs and we feel this option gives them a much better chance of survival. A detailed post can be read here: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/osprey-cam/?ht-comment-id=15225467

I'm sad that we won't see the chicks fledge and at the same time very glad they will have the opportunity for a better life. The current situation is not a good one. With bad weather forecast for the next 2 weeks the outcome for these two on this nest is potentially dire. Does a parent feed themselves or their offspring ? If translocation is an option then sense says use it. Parents and chicks will benefit.

Yes, the weather makes the fish go deeper in the water, making it hard to spot them to catch. Pretty sure this bad weather has had a big effect on fishing. Best wishes Linda ❣

From other videos & Geemeff’s comments, it seems Louis has only been able to bring one or two fish per day recently: and he’s clearly not strong enough to do more as he’s been perching more than fishing. So it’s either intervene with a well-established relocation programme or have both chicks - and maybe both adults too - slowly starve in Scotland or die during migration. The species is still vulnerable after near extinction from the wrong type of human actions: relocation is the right action in this situation.

The fish Louis brought was tiny, the family would need a good half dozen of that size daily to sustain them, and Louis is fishing at nowhere near his usual rate, hasn't been for a couple of weeks now. Plus the weather is unseasonably wet and cold, so as there was this fortuitous opportunity to save the chicks and place them on the translocation programme, Woodland Trust, working with licensed authorities, took the momentous decision to remove them.

@@anniemac3075 To be fair, they said in their statement they were going to take the chicks anyways. "This programme was already planned and in motion and it has been incredibly fortuitous that the timing fits with the emergence of our crisis on the nest at Arkaig.” Basically, they lucked out that there happened to be a crisis now, because otherwise people would have been upset when they just barged in and took the chicks.
