When I saw they were a gay couple I thought it was some BS woke message but they really nailed the scenes, the entire relationship from just a human level and I was very sad for them. Great acting, great episode.

I was thinking about it! As someone who also played the game I think The Last of Us was one of those industryXcommunity changing moments. Ten, 15 years ago guys crying in front of cameras cause of a game or similars would probably been seen as weird, as society still struggles with toxic views on masculinity, but then games like The Last of Us came out with stories so profound that everywhere we saw people being emotionally affected by it. I remember people saying that "it was the game that made grown men cry" and stuff like that, and now when you watch streams and gameplays seeing players cry is nothing out of the ordinary. If the games touch them, they show it without fear, and I think thats amazing.

I’m ok with it as long as it’s not shoved down my throat in a media that’s not about it. For instance, if I’m getting a gay Bruce Wayne movie that is all about his love affair with joker I’m out. But here, it wasn’t showing them off as gay but showing them off as people. And I’m man enough to admit this got me crying. This was a hell of an episode and I can’t wait for more to come

as a queer man, i 100% agree. in hollywood there’s obvious, borderline offensive pandering, and then there’s beautiful storytelling about a love story we genuinely care about. this episode was one of the best and most moving pieces of TV i’ve watched because it was the latter. it was so much more impactful to me as a queer person than some surface-level, forced bs. so grateful that this episode managed to do it right and bring our communities together!

@@unicornhuntercg Spoilers for the game obviously, but in the game Bill is alive but pretty much just a quirky side character that helps Joel and Ellie get a car, and he's a very cynical survivalist and loner who tells Joel: "I had somebody that I used to care about. And in this world, that shit is good for one thing: getting you killed." It's later revealed that he had a "partner", Frank, who he had a falling out with because Bill was unable to change and remained a paranoid, bitter and stuck in his ways man. Joel, Ellie and Bill stumble upon Frank's corpse, as he was bit while trying to get out of the town and hung himself. We never see any of their relationship, and we only learn about it mostly through some vague dialogue and a suicide letter that you can find from Frank to Bill. The fact that their relationship was romantic was never outright stated but it was HEAVILY implied, and Ellie even finds a gay porn magazine from Bill's stash. In a way, the game version of Bill was a warning for Joel about what happens when you completely shut yourself off from other people. While he was a cool character with fun interactions with Ellie especially, his and Frank's relationship was also unfortunately another "bury your gays" trope, where queer romances in media, especially between men, are rarely depicted as having happy endings. Which is why so many people are overjoyed to see that while they kept Bill's character very faithful to the game in terms of his core traits, they changed the course of his arc. Bill's function in the story is still the same: He gets Joel a car and works to reinforce his character arc but just from a positive example instead of a negative one. Sorry for a long reply, but you asked.

Especially in contrast to how crushing that "I never asked you for anything; not to feel the way I felt.." line from the previous episode was...ohhhh yeah.

Game Bill is a warning to Joel about what he could become if he kept to his paranoid loner ways. Show Bill was an inspiration for Joel that even the hardiest of survivalists could accept love and loss again.

They kinda changed Bill into the opposite character role from the one in the original story to deliver a similar moral. It was a sweet story and ultimately a good episode, background on Bill & Frank was welcome, but I kinda woulda preferred Bill as the angry loner cautionary tale for Joel over a saccharine love story that ends romantically. I would have liked to see more of Nick Offerman as a version of Bill from the game, but I'm not hugely disappointed bc they still told a good story. It is mildly worrying about exactly how much they are going to change in the story going forward, bc they are changing major beats to tell very different stories, good so far, but it's always gonna be a gamble when they divert from the original story.

Also when he says that he hated the world and was happy when everyone died. Dude was a gay man living in a rural country, a virgin well into his 40s, I can't even imagine the amount of repressed feelings and internal homophobia he must've dealt with, makes total sense that he hated the world. Which just made him meeting Frank and them having a life together so much more heartwarming. Truly an incredible episode.

As a straight guy who has never been able to relate to any same sex relationship portrayed before... I look at Bill and Frank and I say - that's the kind of love I want. It transcends categorisation. It's purely human, purely love.

It's also pretty ironic in a world that's become much more accepting of gay relationships that they keep showing homophobia and all the negativity. Yeah, their story is pretty much a success story IMO. They won at the end of the world, lived about as good of a life as one could hope for after total collapse of civilization.

I just watched the ep 3 hrs ago, and been binge watching reactions in the last hour, ugly crying every single time lol And the thing is, as humans, we are so resilient, strong-willed, hopeful, and doesn't mean it's a horrible world that it turned out to be, it wasn't devoid of love, happiness, hope, and redemption. They're interpretation of Bill and Frank's love humanises these characters, and shows that there are numerous of different stories in this post-apocalyptic world they're living in. Stories of life, death, tragedy, hope, etc. With that said, I'm quite sure there are others who lived similar lives, attaining a resemblance of 'normal', quite comfortable lives, whilst surviving in this world. Just reading the comments, there are people who wanted the show to 100% stick to the game's story, or to just narrowly stay within the lines of nihilism and survival. I politely disagree and I love their interpretation of Bill and Frank's story. Bittersweet but it was beautiful nevertheless.

They really balanced each other out. Whenever it comes to these types of shows and movies, the badass is always the guy with all the guns and who is prepared. I just love how Frank swoops in and is actually a badass by planting strawberries and flowers.

For years I've heard actors say that comedy is actually the hard thing, that drama is much easier. After watching this episode I believe it cause Nick just fucking killed this role.

He also played a great dramatic role in Devs! Super weird and wonderful show.

@@darkguardian50 as an actor (not one anybody would know, though): yeah, no, comedy is the bane of my existence. my best friend is also an actor and absolutely thrives on comedic roles, and i fear her for it tbh.

They got the idea from Vince Gilligan to cast him because he always said he targets comedic actors because they are very good at showing different ranges of emotions while living in and reacting to a crazy world.

I heard it on the 35th anniversary episode of Eastenders when little Denny Rickman drowned in the Thames River and all his neighbors had to watch as the paramedics tried to revive him and failed. He was an evil little shit, but that music made his death scene all the more powerful.

I believe that song was used as a score in the movie Arrival. For me, it feels like grief in a song, the strings always gives me full body goosebumps. Truly a masterpiece ❤

I got a little mad that the other 2 didn't give him a bit of support. He needed a break, a hug, water and caring.

Unknowingly, Bill might've nudged Joel towards the decision to save Ellie & doom the world.

Bill did the turning both times.

Such an amazingly touching episode. A great story on its own, but I also love how it was used to help develop Joel's character through that letter in the end, helping to drive home the theme of how Joel needs to start letting people in and truly commit to keeping Ellie safe, not just for Ellie's sake but also to give his own life purpose again. I also think it'll go down in history as a landmark example of queer representation. They weren't just gay for the sake of token representation or whatever, them being gay was a huge and central part of what made the story so touching. Bill had clearly been closeted his whole life, causing him to be a virgin in his 40s or 50s, which just made the lack of human connection he'd suffered, and the euphoria at meeting Frank, so much more poignant. THIS is how you do queer representation, you don't just tell a generic story and turn some of the characters gay, you make it a real part of the story and of their characterization, in a way that makes the audience feel for and connect with the queer characters and their struggles!

its def up there i can only think of 4 better episodes and ive seen a lot of shows, its kinda annoying that the rating is lower just cuz people are mad that the story didn't stick to the game story
