"Revenge bad" is a moral psyop created by people who, in a reasonable society, would be vengeance killed
@GodOfOrphans
@GodOfOrphans Жыл бұрын
This^ The vengeance instinct is deeply tied with a desire for the offending party to learn from their mistakes, it is not just spite as it is often protrayed as. The real problem is when it becomes a destructive obsession rather than inherently bad which good cycle of violence stories properly show. Whereas bad ones just reductively go "revenge bad m'kay" and have cartoonish justifications for why the offending party isn't all bad despite doing irredeemable things which anyone sane can see right through.

“I Saw the Devil” is “revenge bad” done right. “The Glory” is a show with a message of “revenge good when the offenders are held accountable for their actions”. Both are from South Korea, who somehow created revenge stories way better than a glorious hollywood using way less money.

Reminds me of the "if you kill the bad guy, you're just as bad as him" argument. Kind of like how it's stupid to think Batman would become an evil murderer if he killed the Joker. Which is why Tim Burton Batman is still the best Batman because he killed the Joker and gave no shit.
@nont18411
@nont18411 Жыл бұрын
@@redman9493 The whole “If you kill a bad guy, you are just bad as him” is just a classic excuse for DC to keep sparing Joker’s life because the other villains are not as marketable as him. They need the Joker so there will be countless justification to not killing him even though it ended up ruining Batman’s character moving forward.

The show: “Joel is such a scumbag for robbing humanity of a cure for his own selfish reasons.” Also the show: Never show any infected ever again after episode 5. The rest are all flashbacks. The last infected in this show chronologically is Sam. So if it’s not a big issue in the first place, why not let Ellie enjoy her life?

Here's something that will no doubt get buried, but Last of Us the game implies the "cure" flat out wouldn't work no matter what. If I am remembering correctly, there was files/notes about previous people who were "immune". Ellie wasn't the first and most likely wouldn't be the last person to die for nothing.

Well, duh, cus the Fireflies are treating the Cordyceps as if they were a virus and researching cures with that in mind, which is fucking retarded. Fungal infections are vastly different from bacterial or viral ones, and as such researching cures for them requires to follow different procedures. I'd like to think this is a way the game tells us that the Fireflies really don't know what the fuck are they doing, but seeing how 2 retconned them into being the good guys (like, in 1 the facility they were using was run down and violated any type of protocol you can think of for research laboratories, while in 2 in the flashback everything is clean and in order), I believe it's just Drunkmann not knowing jackshit about anything

Yep always overlooked. Idk why they insist on telling us that not gutting Ellie in the first game was bad because it really would have worked and saved humanity. Even if it did work (which I highly doubt) it’s been decades. Worlds already over, humanity has to pick up the pieces. The last of us trying to put anything together to keep moving forward. It’s so weird how the original game feels like it had one vision. Then the game company and a bunch of weirdo journos came out saying the opposite.

Iirc, Neil said after the fact that the viewer was meant to assume that Ellie's death would offer a 100% certainty that the Fireflies could create a cure. But, regardless, I dislike when the logistics of the cure come up in this argument, because Joel never gave a shit. Sure, you're free to come up with your own justitifications on why Joel's actions were justified, but the rationality that most people gravitate towards *had nothing to do with his decision.* He didn't have a few minutes of introspection where he considered whether the Fireflies would just use the cure as a bargaining chip to garner supporters, or whether the world can even return to a sense of normalcy anymore. The only thing on his mind was: "They're going to take my baby girl. I won't let them." As far as he cared, the cure could have had a 100% chance or a 0% chance to work. Hell, the cure could have been a fucking *miracle drug* that also pacified those who took it, numbing the general populace's enhanced violent urges thanks to the apocalypse and allowing for society to return to the (relative) peace of pre-outbreak. He still would've done what he did.

@@idontknowyet8540 Oh yeah, 100%, never justified Joel's massacre with logic cus he didn't care about such things, he just wanted to save his adoptive daughter. Still, the Fireflies were a bunch of self-righteous assholes who didn't know what the fuck they were doing, no matter what Cuckmann (have no respect for a guy who thinks a cliched "revenge bad" plot is deep and thought provoking") says. If they weren't, they'd have tried to explain to BOTH Joel and Ellie what would developing the cure cause (AKA, Ellie dying) and tried to convince them of the cure being the first step of humanity's revival or something, instead they just knocked out a teenager and tried to intimidate Joel into running away (or just tried to kill him, can't remember well). So fuck whoever says Joel wasn't justified in killing them, the bastards kidnapped one of the only persons he cared about and didn't even bother to try and convince him into agreeing with them, I would've done the exact same thing in this situation. Man I seriously hate Part 2
@idontknowyet8540
@idontknowyet8540 Жыл бұрын
@Jack Mesrel Oh 100%. I think the final act of Part I is probably the weakest written portion overall, specifically in reference to the contradiction that the Fireflies (Marlene in particular) imply they never woke her up and simply *assumed* she'd be fine with dying for this cause (specifically the "it's what she'd want" line instead of "it's what she wants"), but Ellie subtly hints that she knew what was going to happen to her later when she tells Joel she's "still waiting for [her] turn", despite it being implied she was never told. Of course, this implication is then later "corrected" in Part II with Ellie's "I was supposed to die in that hospital" line, which then calls into question why Part II reframed Ellie's "okay" at the end of Part I from "doesn't believe him but goes with it to be with her father figure" to "actually genuinely believes him"? Her confirming she knew the surgery would kill her means that she was likely told by the doctors beforehand what was going to happen, consented to it, and was then put under for operation... only to wake up in the back of a truck and told by Joel the Fireflies just gave up then and there. If this is what the game wants us to believe the course of events are from Ellie's perspective, then what reason does she have to believe Joel? It's doubtful they'd anesthetize her, prep an OR, cart her to it, and then just say "y'know what this isn't worth it we give up" before peacefully giving Ellie back to Joel. But the game just wants us to believe it. Sure, she's shown having doubts about the explanation Joel fed her here and there, but that only starts *years* after it initially happened. God, you can rip Part II's writing apart for hours...

Neil Druckmann needed to have tard wranglers throughout writing the game, even going so far to just letting Neil drop random ideas and the rest of the team do the work. A big theme im noticing with were this show goes wrong is a childish understanding of trust and the "goodness" of humanity in a survival situation. In reality we know full well and have proof that people devolve into tribes in a disaster. Can't risk resources on a stranger, so you either shoo them off at best or kill them to protect your own, because friends and family are what matters to an average Joe and empathy is only going to reinforce this.

Meanwhile, years earlier, Amy Hennig writes a story with similar themes in the Legacy of Kain games and ends up with one of the best video game stories ever. I think at best his career will be stagnant for a long time. At worst, it's in the early stages of a slow sinking ship. (Though I can't say he wouldn't deserve it.) The TV show will likely go down as average when everything is said and done. It's short term gain to milk whatever interest there is in the franchise. The gaming side of things however, I think Neil knows he majorly fucked up with part two. That's why there's a tv show and remake of Part I. I don't care about awards or how many copies sold. That shit was purely done for damage control. And the number of returns was just as equally high; to the point that stores were pulling "all sales are final" at the last minute to stay out of the red. Add this with Naughty Dog's and Sony's scummy behavior with the leaks. They've pissed off a good portion of the fanbase. I'm just speculating, but I get the feeling bad things are heading for Naughty Dog and Druckman.

One theme I always personally felt people who argue *_"Joe Was Evil/Wrong"_* miss is *_"The Age Of Man Is Over/Does Humanity Even DESERVE To Survive?"_* Like a lot of people praise the scenery of TLOU and even moments like the giraffes walking on the roof and completely miss the point that all of it probably helped influenced Joel's decision to pick Ellie over any *_"idea"_* of humanity. The point of every city and state we visit in TLOU being overgrown isn't just to be dystopic, it's also showing us how Nature is returning back to it's beauty and reclaiming the Earth. While Man is only sinking further into filth fighting to hang on to whatever's left. Notice, just like Loli said, *_nobody_* is fighting to go back to the way we were before, nobody is fighting for a better tomorrow. *_Not even the pretentious ideologues who tell us they are._* Nature is evolving. Even the Cordyceps itself is as new versions of Infected are made. But Man and his machinations merely exist in limbo and kill each other off for survival's sake. I think since Neil is only the *_"Ideas Guy"_* he never even saw the true nuance in TLOU in that the idea of curing the Cordyceps was never the end goal because he's too moralistic like everyone else in California. So he could never comprehend a story where both sides can actually be bad *_AND ALSO_* make good points at the same time. And that is why he forced Amy and Bruce out, and that's why he keeps rewriting the history of TLOU. At first I thought his issue was that *_he_* never wanted people to think Joel was in the right. Now I see Neil never wanted TLOU to pan out the way it did. TLOU2 was what 1 would've been if we weren't blessed with the competent writers at the time.

Even with the hypothetical cure in hand, the fireflies wouldn’t save the world because they are no better than the oppressive government they fight against. They’re no more than a faction of thugs like everyone else. I can imagine a real follow up to the last of us’s message would be Ellie becoming a leader to Jackson in her adulthood, uniting other communities together and trying to create a better world through accepting others. The fireflies failed because they thought they could just shoot all their problems away, that’s why the people they “liberated” turned savage, because the fireflies truly had no real plan for stability or peace.

For me, the question isn't so much whether Joel was right or wrong, but rather why SHOULD Joel save humanity. I mean, look what 'humanity' did for him when he needed it the most; robbed him of his beloved daughter and thrusted him into a cruel and unforgiving world of desperate survival. Why on earth should he have any obligation to humanity when it had already failed him?

Both have multiplayer with GoT getting it a little later after launch because they ran out of time. Both also received dlc over time. All I remember hearing about part 2 was a next gen update and one difficult mode added with Joel singing at the end credits. I genuinely don't know how Naughty Dog expects to survive if their best path forward was to cross their fingers hoping the tv series wasn't a shit show while remaking the first game that wasn't even a decade old.

So there's a lot of comments on the budget and that part where it touches on how they thought they didn't have enough money, while movies with *less* time and money managed to do more. The reason there's so many issues that seem like it was a budget issue is because of a combination of incompetent directing and clear graft. They weren't even shy about it, interviews with people explicitly stated Neil and the lead cast were overpaid for their work, and that's where the majority of the money went to. The current Naughty Dog mindset is pay people enough to care enough to work on the game while their careers are in jeopardy due to blacklisting policies enacted by Neil Druckmann, and TLOU2 needed the same budget as Marvel's Avengers to do that. The show was not made by motivated people, and only was given enough of a budget by HBO to make the show, not for Neil to skim off the top.

This show is a product of what happens when you get a genuinely talented creative and surround them with pure yes-men. Neil has some clearly good ideas but the man has the writing skill of a 14 year old on tumblr. The fact that no one saw the massive issues with the changes made is insane. You’d think that after part 2 he’d understand the criticism but no, he fucking doubled down and couldn’t help himself from actively changing elements that were perfectly fine as it was.

Even saying he's a talented creative is stretching the truth because he's not talented, as the *one* time in his life he tried telling an original story *nobody* paid attention to it, not even the most diehard TLOU2 or show fan. He's not even creative, because the *only* thing that he had an input in for the Last of Us concept was the names. I shit you not when saying there's more evidence of Epstein killing himself than there is of Neil Druckmann having actually done anything at Naughty Dog in terms of creative development.

We’ve seen what happens when Neil has a good writing team and actors. His biggest flaw is just pure ego, ego is what inevitably kills any support you can have. No one wants to work with someone who shouts over them. It’s honestly weird how much the show is praised in spite of its very glaring flaws. If the criticism was harsher, it makes me wonder how Neil would approach his future projects. It may be wishful thinking but I at least hope that the writers working with Neil are honest enough to tell him the issues with part 2. That’s probably why the second season will be multiple parts, because someone may have pointed out the obvious pacing issues.

That context really should show the explicit reason why Naughty Dog's been so focused on "showing the other side" recently. Edit: This may also be the reason why he said "The zombies won't hurt you if you don't fight them" said likely in response to Tess getting mouth-raped instead of bitten in the show. 1:08:11 "Do you give a shit about me or not?" "Of course I do." This is also a change that fundamentally alters the scene. Joel is pawning Ellie off on Tommy specifically _because_ he does not want to care about her in the game. Hence his "Tommy, I NEED this" during their conversation. This is what Ellie figures out while they're talking. She sees right through Joel. That's where the "I'm not her, you know." line comes from. In the show, it just doesn't fit.

What would happen after harvesting the cure is that they could get a more lethal quick acting version of the regular virus since this new one wouldn't show any side effects until it took over 100% thus making other people THINK they're also immune but instead they just turn slower than usual.

I have no idea, despite not watching the series but as a relative pretty decent fan of TLOU1 (never played 2), why they changed and adapted it, to its detriment so, _so much._ The strength of TLOU is in its intensely restrictive POV and atmospheric storytelling with strong deuteragonist leads. I am not surprised the budget was an issue when they unnecessarily tried to broaden the scope, or expository about XYZ, _SO FUCKING MUCH._ So much, is not needed. They direly needed some amount of subtlety, restriction on the scope of what they were trying to convey, and foster further understanding of what makes TLOU work within its original medium. And more than alot of games, its not much of s stretch to adapt pretty 1:1 where possible. I am definitely NOT arguing it needed to include gameplay elements down to a T, but so much was wasted by changing and broadening the scale and scope when it wasn't needed to be effective; if anything it hurt the show immensely. Sure most of but the biggest combat sequences can be nixed, but still: a distinct lack of attention to detail and thematic storytelling.. of *THE FUCKING LAST OF US* is pretty pathetic. It's not exactly what I think of as a top tier piece of fiction, but I guess now in comparison, its still 2 standard deviations above most. The show.. not so much. Pretty big bag fumble here. Druck'd/10. PS: the brutality and weaponry/scaving focus the game puts should've had more emphasis in the show. The fact that no one gets bricked, slowly choked out after human shielding as a set piece, etc.. is a fucking crime to how good the combat can be in the game at its best.

And she’s desperate not to lose Joel, so when she’s in a frozen mall trying to save her new friend she remembers how she failed to save an old one. The scene in the helicopter where she grabs the medical supplies and says, “I’m not letting you go.” Says it all.

I think the show is deliberately trying to demystify the virus to try to make the cure seem more plausible. Because otherwise too many people would brush aside the cure as being a pipe dream. It still is, but you know. Bonus points if that asian scientist from the flashback turns up again.

My big problem was that they either cut entirely or butchered the action scenes. Like they add to why we care about ellu in the game. She helps and saves us. Also finds us ammo and shit. She grows on us through out gameplay and i think they didnt even really try to show how they became a horrifying unstoppable duo by the end of the game.

I don't know why, but I like how the PS3/4 version of the game looks more than the remake. It's slightly stylized to where it almost looks like the character models were referenced from a Kirkman or Ennis comic. [Namely TWD and Crossed]

I really want Part II to follow the game as closely as possible, with hardly anything new or rearranged. The HBO series is a completely fresh slate to see the opinions of people who haven't been exposed to the games. I know I shouldn't want to see something fail, but just picturing the responses of Naughty Dog writers when the second season gets flamed, by people who weren't even aware of its shortcomings going into it, is enough to make me drool. Alas, the snobs and contrarians who will herald it as a masterpiece will probably be enough to make executives pat themselves on the backs and ignore genuine criticism.

Jesus... That really is what media has turned into these days isn't it? Douche bags so high on their own supply they make the most milquetoast and disfigured spin on a successful property and throw in a few token gender/race changes and say they're artists. This is why I've just stopped watching and engaging with movies and shows on a whole. I haven't missed a goddamn thing

Thank you for this. I was hesitant on watching this since I knew it was going to follow the story beats from Part 1, without anything new. The only 'new' thing was David's perspective from episode 8. I was hoping to see more of that. The writing or narrative of certain things, like Ellie sleeping in the same room as the infected Sam was stupid, among others. The retconning of how the infected work, I think, shattered Druckmann's cred as a storyteller. He and Mazin deserve the flack. If they're going to do the same thing for season 2, I just hope they learned from their mistakes.
