When I was watching this, I thought to myself, “this man is so broken and so tremendously fucked up.” Playing the games, it’s hard to stop and think about just who you’re playing as. This show is doing a fantastic job at showing that these are people. Human beings. Joel is a *broken* man. Pedro Pascal delivered that on a silver platter tonight.

@@CommanderLongJohn Joel canonically has anxiety, though. In the first game he took blood pressure meds and anxiety meds before the apocalypse. It’s not totally unbelievable for Joel’s anxiety to manifest physically like it did in the episode. He’s not heartless. Just hardened. And it’s a lot easier for him to feel sympathy for someone that reminds him of his daughter, and probably kids in general. Joel Isn’t the cruel, emotionless badass you think he is. He may have done bad things, and he’s not the greatest person but he’s still a human being with thoughts and feelings.

@@CommanderLongJohn You're talking about a character who lost his daughter in a brutal way and has dealt with bottling up his grief in an incredibly unhealthy way. He's not Doomguy and he never has been. He was always written to be a human character who has gone through hell and back. What he went through broke him and he was never willing to go through that again. That is what makes Joel who he is.

I love how human Joel is in this scene. Even though he’s a survivor who’s lasted 20 years in the apocalypse, he’s still human and he’s getting older and slower. He’s starting to see Ellie as a daughter figure and that terrifies him, he’s already lost one daughter he can’t take losing another one. He’s already afraid of her dying and him not being able to protect her, for the first time since episode 1 we seen so vulnerable and so scared.

Joel has kept himself in a war state of mind for those 20 years. Not really living, but fighting to simply serve and survive as a guardian for his brother, Tess, and now Ellie. Once he's in Jackson, a place totally unlike Boston that actually resembles how society was and where his brother and Ellie are safe, he lets down his guard for the first time. Because he can finally live and reflect, he experiences PTSD at its worst. Every pain he's been through, starting from Sarah, now begins to crush him as his "failures".

And it's not just Tess, it's Sarah too. From the first episode/beginning of the game, all he's done is fail Sarah, in his eyes. The show really makes Joel more vulnerable than the game. In the game he sort of compartmentalizes everything he’s done because of survival on top of that his age doesn’t really affect the things you do in that game like beating up the infected or climbing up stairs. I love this scene a lot more than the game because it makes him more human. Hearing Pedro talk about how his body is failing him, how he can’t keep up, and that he’s failing at protecting his daughter in his own sleep got me 😢. “I’m failing in my sleep” that line broke me. Indeed. I think Joel in the game works for the game, since gameplay-wise it's an action game, while in the series they can show up some of the traits they weren't able to in the game. It's still the same character but with different traits being explored.

This Joel is more emotional and honest whereas original Joel just built walls so thick around himself after losing Sarah that he rarely let's someone see his real emotions. He wouldn't have had such a speech with Tommy cause he would have never admitted his fears of losing Ellie like he lost Sarah so he tried to use the card "You have to do it for all the times I saved you in the past" on him but Ellie still figures out the real reason why he was gonna leave her with him as shown when they talk in that abandoned house. I guess in the show they made Joel less cold and more open to talk about his feelings to make the plot moving faster.

This is definitely one of my (if not my absolute) favorite monologues from a show or movie. And, Pedro Pascal just delivers and performs it absolutely incredibly. Here's the whole transcript, She's immune. Ellie. She got infected, but she didn't get sick. Tommy. Tommy. I saw her get bit myself. That was months ago. Months. She's immune. ("From the beginning.") It was Marlene. She hired us to smuggle her to some Fireflies. It went bad. Tess got bit. She made me swear to take the kid. It was her dyin' wish, what the hell was I supposed to do? We made it as far as KC, and then-- You know, she saved my life there... from another kid. Five years ago, I would've destroyed him. But she had to shoot him to save me. 14 years old. Because I was too slow, and too fuckin' deaf to hear him comin'. And I saw... I saw a man kill his own brother... to save her, while I just watched. And today, I thought that dog was gonna tear her apart because it smelled somethin' on her. And all I did was stand there. I couldn't... move. I couldn't think of anything to say. I just-- I was so afraid. You think I can still handle things, but... I'm not who I was. I'm weak. Lately, there are these moments where the fear comes up outta nowhere, and... my heart... feels like it stopped. And I have dreams. Every night. ("What kinda dreams?") I don't know. I can't remember. I just know when I wake up... I've lost somethin'. I'm failin' in my sleep. That's all I do. It's all I've ever done is fail her again and again. ("You want me to take her.") I'm just gonna get her killed. I know it. I know it. I have to leave her. ("Joel.") I mean that's why you took off on me, right? To make up for the things we did? Well, here's your chance to bring your kid into a better world. You're younger than me, you're still strong. You said it yourself, you'll come back. You have to take her. And you can't tell anyone, not even Maria. Tommy, you're the only one I trust. If anyone else sees those bites on her, what's under her skin... they'll shoot her. It's the last thing I'll ever ask of you. I swear.

This This is an adaption Was this in the game? No. Would it fit in the game? No. Does that take away *anything* from this scene. *Fuck No*. A good adaptation, and fucking amazing adaptations, is when a new creator takes whats there, and rather than abiding by strict rules and guidelines, expands upon it, while paying respect to the original. Can that go wrong sometimes? Yes. But this? This makes me cry. This makes my heart turn into stone and then powder and float away into the void. This kills me. Its so good.

My favorite thing about the writing in this show is that the show runners and even the characters, especially Joel, understand how difficult it is being old in the apocalypse. Joel is vulnerable not just because he's with his brother, but because he finally found someone who he can care about again. However, he's smart enough to know that he isn't in his prime and cannot protect her as well as Tommy. Joel isn't nearly as strong as he is in the game, and it's that mortality that makes this version of him all the more endearing.

This scene was way better then the game. 2:05 I could feel Joel’s pain and how he is frustrated that he no longer in his combat/fighting prime and that age is catching up and his body is failing him. I could feel his internal pain way more then I ever could in the game which makes the game so much better now with this added context. And knowing Joel’s fate next season, this really broke my heart to see Joel so broken, weak, and sad. I was glad Joel got what was coming in part 2 after what he did in Salt Lake City, but now I’m just incredibly conflicted with this added context and scene of how Joel truly feels deep DEEP down. Fuck you neil druckmann for making me feel emotions for video game characters. He really is an evil genius.

And from the confrontation in the lost ranch to the choice on the horses he looks bipolar. Here, we can see all the progression of his change of heart, showing also all his Weaknesses.
