Watching this, I felt like Joel was somehow reliving that first night of the outbreak, but instead of powerlessly watching Sarah die in his arms, he's now fighting back to hold on to Ellie. It's like he's been given another chance to do something within his power.

Every time he says 'baby girl' it makes my heart so happy

Just remember, no matter how bad the infected are, Joel has dealt with them just fine for the last 20 years. But the one time when Joel and the only person in the world he truly cared about were vulnerable and needed help, It was another uninfected human that killed his daughter. It was not the infection that made Joel a broken man, it was people who's job it was to protect and help them. After this injustice, is anyone really surprised that Joel did what he did? Ellie had just come into his life and for the first time, Joel was beginning to feel that purpose and attachment which he had as a father to Sarah. Then when they finally get to where they think is safe (like in the beginning of the game), those who were supposed to protect them are once again threatening to take away the only person Joel cares about in the world. Well Joel has known the pain of losing someone like this for the last 20 years and there was no way he was going to just let it happen again. "but that's still really selfish for him not to try to save humanity" Why should Joel give a crap about what happens to humanity? It was them who killed his daughter.

He did something that he never got the chance before.... Saving his daughter.

The world took something from him, so he took something from the world...

A very beautiful thing about The Last of Us which almost nobody realised is how Joel actually was able to save Ellie. In the beginning of the game Joel runs with his daughter in his hands and isn't prepared. They get confronted by a soldier with a gun and get shot at and his daughter dies. 20 Years Later. Joel again runs with his surrogate daughter in his hands but he carries a gun hidden beneath her legs because he knows better this time. He was prepared. Experienced. And hence was able to shoot Marlene who pointed a gun towards him and Ellie in the end. This is a very subtle and beautiful detail about how people learn from their mistakes. If Joel again didn't have a gun ready, he would have had to hand Ellie over and lose his daughter again or else Marlene would shoot and kill him. Absolute Masterpiece.

IN THE BEGINNING we see that Joel doesn't like a plan to transport the Child to the Town Hall ... not one bit ! He doesn't care about Ellie, Fireflies. He cares about himself. After many traveled distance the bond between them (Ellie and Joel) keeps getting stronger and stronger. They struggled with the whole world. Joel lost sth extremely important in his life - his own daughter and this is the reason why he is so cold. There is a scene when Ellie disappeared with Tommy's horse. When Joel and Ellie speak together in a room we hear from Joel: "You are not my daughter". The truth is that he can't admit that she is all he needs, all he loves and actually he can't admit that his feelings for her are getting stronger with every second. After all, he doesn't want to get hurt once again. He doesn't want to lose another person that he loves. This game is just simply gorgeous. It makes me almost cry when Joel goes to surgery room, kills the doctors and escapes with Baby Girl on his hands. It just reminds me the moment when he took Sarah on his hands. This cruel plague and soldier took his child. The World took his child with no question but now on he is fighting for his new "daughter" even if It could mean his own sacrifice - his death. He will do everything for her, because this is true fatherhood. This is the truth !! He loves Ellie more than himself, more than anything in the world. I think that Ellie knew that Joel lied her. But it only means that he finally admitted it - he cares about her. And she is his pride and joy.

It's highly unlikely that Ellie is the only one in the entire world that has this immunity.

The emotional change that Joel has with Ellie throughout the game is so realistic, he starts off with no emotion towards her but slowly grows attached. I beat this game on grounded and was mad that it ever had to end. I could play it for ever.

When Joel carried Ellie between his arms while escaping, at that moment, he received a second chance to save her "daughter" when he couldn't do it with Sarah

I just finished playing this game straight through for the second time. It is such a beautiful game with so much heart and depth. I wish all games were masterpieces like this one is. I've come to the conclusion that at the very end, at the very last moment, when Joel swore to Ellie that he was telling the truth, somewhere deep down inside in her soul, she knew. She knew that he was lying to her. And in that moment, she didn't care. She chose to believe what he was telling her. She was happy to believe. After all, he had become her hero and her father. And after all of the pain and loss, she decided to choose her happy ending instead. It was the perfect ending to a gorgeous game.

I think Ellie reminds Joel of Sarah. They most likely would've acted the same.

I hope Ellie would understand, why joel did what he did, there are so few people worth saving in the world.

Even if Ellie's life was sacrificed to find a vaccine, there is no guarantee the answer to a vaccine will be discovered. There were others like Ellie who were sacrificed and cut open only for their sacrifices to be fruitless. So in other words, Ellie's death would have all been in vain.

This is the perfect ending, thank God they didn’t make a sequel, this game doesn’t need it.

People who try to villainize Joel and ask why he did this, ask yourselves "Why didn't Marlene ask Ellie for consent?" "Why was Ellie sedated and kept in the dark about all of this and Joel for that matter?" "Why was Marlene confrontational with Joel knowing he would try to get her back?" He thought this was the right thing to do and I don't blame him. Everything has been taken from him (his daughter and his friends) and people never understand his intentions and motivations. It's so frustrating. What made The Last Of Us so great is because Joel is a sympathetic and a heroic protagonist, and not a monster who commits brutalities just for the sake of it (cough* Abby cough*), he does things out of logic and reasons and the people he kills is usually in complete self defense in survival terms. It's his instincts and guts what makes him a special character and a real person. He will always be the reason why I love this game. Troy Baker and Joel deserved better than Part 2. The fact that Marlene orders her troops to shoot him just shows how pathetic and desperate she is. She is a terrible person who is in charge of a terrorist organization and deserved to go down with it or at least whatever is left of it. For me it's satisfying when Joel blows her brains out in the parking lot after what she tried to pull on him in the end. Part 2 needs better writing and justice for daddy and the ultimate father figure of gaming Joel. All we know as viewers and gamers is that Ellie completely passes out in the water with her lifeless body and Joel is trying to bring her back to life only to be knocked out and then woken up in a hospital. She might as well be taken advantage of by Marlene's leadership with the Fireflies and the fact that she was in a comatose state. You never know.

Reading all these comments calling Joel selfish, it seems like many of you did not bother to hear the recordings that you can find as Joel is sneaking around to find Ellie. If you did, you'd know that the recordings say that the Fireflies have experimented with other immune people, and have not been able to create a vaccine. Those people just died for no reason. What makes all of you think that Ellie would have been the exception? If Joel knew for sure that a cure could be found with Ellie, maybe, just maybe, he'd consider it. But he kills the doctors and Marlene knowing that they don't care how many people they have to kill as long as they can save themselves.If you call Joel selfish, then the Fireflies are just plain cowards and hypocrites.

The music that plays as Joel starts carrying Ellie out is a variation on the music from when he was holding Sarah as she died at the start of the game, but with so much more going on in the piece. I think that moment is just one of the most beautiful works of art I’ve seen. It’s the culmination of Joel’s character arc and his decisions, and like we saw, he paid the price.

I find the medical staff hypocrites when they called Joel a monster when they're about to kill a little girl for a cure. They didn't even give her a choice.

I think this sums up why I like Joel as a character so much. Ultimately hes weak. He can't do the right thing. He kills so many people and does really bad things just so he won't be alone in the world. He isn't heroic but extremely flawed and human. You can understand why he does the things he does. So much that it's easy to imagine we would do similarly horrible things to save our 'Daughter'

At least i can watch this ending and be satisfied

Potential Spoiler Warning and discussion of the last of us 2 leaks: Just here after seeing the last of us part 2 leaks. And I've gotta say wtf. This game (the last of us 1) is so beautiful. It may be dark and realistic in the approach of its characters. But what made it so beautiful was it's honesty and also how even in the darkest times there are still things beautiful and something to live for. This game impacted me in so many ways because of that. Even though life really sucks it still can be beautiful. The whole story is really dark but beautiful. Now the last of us part 2 seems to have taken away what made the original game so beautiful. It was a complete package this game. We were open to a sequel because we thought they would expand these themes we loved. The last of us is Joel and Ellie. The funny thing is Neil Drunkmann said in the earliest conference for the sequel "the last of us is Ellie and Joel". So I have no idea how he could say that and make the game he has made. Ellie and Joel is why everyone loved it. It's why it won so many awards. And the themes it explored are not only abandoned but just destroyed. From what I've seen it's like they literally want to punch there fans in the face. And they have these new characters and elements that simply dont work with the last of us narrative. The last of us is about being human. Not whatever this new game is. I'm not even angry. Im just abit broken. How could you do this naughty dog? Make something so impactful and bring something emotionally connecting to me. And then break all of that for some Agenda? If this game comes out in the state it seems it's going to be in. You've actually broken something that was apart of me. And something I always look proudly back at. And while I will always love this original game the same. I'll always end the game with a bitter taste knowing what they did. It's like having uncharted 4 having Nadine kill nathan drake at the start of the game. Then you play as Nadine half the game then they force you to kill Elena and Sully. The end. That is so laughably bad. It's not even bad fan fiction it's like someone who hate uncharted is making it. Well that's basically the last of us part 2 it seems.

It's a bit obvious Ellie knows he was lying. But Joel just wanted to protect, I don't think he cares if he might have ruined the chance (maybe) to try and save humanity. As everyone is saying, 😂 Humanity took the most important from his life. Sarah; his own daughter. So to me it's not being selfish for saving Ellie because why should Joel help everyone when they wouldn't help him???

Just wanna remind people that: TLOU2 exists just because Joel was trying to be caring father to Ellie and actually saved her life because the fireflies didn't do in depth, scientific research on Ellie about a Fungus cure which is impossible to make. Meaning she would have died for nothing. And the game contradicts that entirety by making us care for a random npc we killed 7 years ago just because he had a daughter. Who killed Joel and trying to make us believe Joel's decision was wrong.

The whole game was an emotional rollercoaster ride, but when Joel carries out of the surgery room (can't really say "saved"), is where the game really peaks for me: desperately looking for an exit while men are hunting him down. Ellie unconscious and Joel absolutely can't let her die, even if his action dooms saving humanity. The music really tops this. True masterpiece!

I remember when they called Joel a fucking animal, but its fucking funny how they were the animals that were going to kill a child. So I believ Joel did the right thing any father would have done or any decent human being for that fact.

I think that, anyone who hasn't had a child of their own, doesn't understand how Joel feels in this moment. Once you have a child, you would let the world burn before allowing them to be harmed. At least any good parent would.

The cliche of giving a seemingly non-existent character's death renewed importance in later instalments is one of the worst and laziest plot devices ever used in Hollywood, gaming and storytelling in general. Can't believe TLoU2 goes down the same route.
