Yahtzee One of the only true critics left. I for one believe that a Critic should always be critical of a game regardless of how well made the game maybe, if Developers are only praised and never criticized then developers can never grow from their mistakes and will only be doomed to repeat them.

On the whole "Everyone is miserable all the time through the whole thing", that gets really tiring and the audience goes numb. It's almost whiplash-inducing. The game goes so far out of its way to include unique mechanics to make the NPCs feel more like real people, and then it acts like Ellie's body count for this game is in the single digits. But after killing dozens if not hundreds to get that far, her "forgiveness" of Abby doesn't feel earned, and therefore doesn't feel like it makes sense. Which is ridiculous, because the stage is perfectly set for Abby and Ellie to just fucking talk about it. If Abby had just recognized Ellie, told her she knows why she's here, begged Ellie to help her save Lev, to release the other prisoners, and said she'd let Ellie finish things after Lev was out of there, it would have felt like enough to make Ellie's decision to cut them down make sense. They could have shared a tense exchange as they went for the boats: Ellie talking about how she can't sleep, how she keeps flashing back to that moment, and Abby saying she knows what that's like, how killing Joel didn't fix those nightmares and wasn't worth it in the end, but that it's not as if she'd have listened if anyone had told her that beforehand anyway, so she doesn't expect mercy. A moment of silence, then Abby asks if that means Joel meant to Ellie what Abby's father meant to her. Ellie doesn't answer. They reach the boats and Ellie demands a fight, but Abby just chuckles bitterly, apologizes, and says she can barely stand, let alone fight. Mirroring Joel's words to Abby, she tells Ellie just to get it over with. Then Ellie threatens Lev and the final boss fight plays out as normal. THAT would feel earned. Abby showing remorse and regret, while knowing she has no right to ask for mercy after she herself would have given none, and resigning herself to her fate, would humanize her in Ellie's eyes. The utter lack of interaction between them, however, means that Ellie shouldn't care any more about her than she has any of the other hundreds of people she killed to get there. It just doesn't work in a game like this.
@Modie
@Modie Жыл бұрын
@@britishnerd3919 I mean, the main thing about AC2 was that it's not just saying "Revenge is bad" and this is the reason why Ezio doesn't kill him, but because that you should kill only for a higher cause. That your work can actually help people instead of just going after your targets. Ezio doesn't even go to Rome with the intent to kill Rodrigo. So he is not deciding on a whim to not kill him. He was already past that revenge way before. And I think that is the main difference. With each target you kill, you can feel that the reasoning is less and less about revenge and more and more about Ezio wanting to help the people around him. You can see him develop this new attitude over time which isn't what's happening with Ellie. She is on full revenge mode for the whole game and only switches at the end.

Tomb Raider 2013 is a excellent example because how cheap the victimisation is of Lara just for the sake of feels. And it’s shoots itself in the foot tone wise because the moment you get a gun from the dead dude who was molesting you the game becomes XP happy shooter instead of a survival game. I still like TR2013 but it set a bad and hypocritical standard.
@TheCybercoco
@TheCybercoco 3 жыл бұрын
Disagree. The evolution of Lara from innocent school girl to hardened killer and survivor was the most compelling thing about the game. Way more than the main plot of the game was. Certainly beats out Nathan Drake by a long shot. You'd have to be pretty short sighted and unimaginative to not see it. But that's pretty much standard for the ADHD prone general audience. Also, the game isn't a survival game, it's an action adventure. It'd be silly to make a Tomb Raider a survival game, since the series was always an action adventure.
@li-limandragon9287
@li-limandragon9287 3 жыл бұрын
@TheCybercoco Tomb Raider was about jumping around tombs and solving puzzles originally, the taking cover behind walls is purely Uncharted influence. I think Lara’s story is compelling in the 2013 game, I genuinely like story and characters. But there’s no denying the tone is wacked, Lara is crying over killing one dude one minute and mowing down a thousand dudes in the next minute. It’s a pure case of ludonarrative dissonance, especially that one cutscene where after killing a dozen cultists Lara suddenly becomes helpless and gets beaten up by a few unarmed guys and dropped in the blood pool. TR2013 has survival elements and gameplay, I think it should taken it even further like MGS3. Lara kills one guy in self defence and spends the rest of the game hiding and laying traps. Then at the very end she goes guns blazing.

@@PlatinumAltaria To be fair it doesn't. The gameplay loop does a little but the story and character development are made to regress just for the sake of the game director wanting to backtrack on their own message in the original. Things seemed grim in the original too but it gave you some moments of joy along the way. In the sequel any good moment comes from a wonky flashback which adds very little in terms of payoff. Sure, make the game grim, but at least have the narrative make sense. Even that isn't there

@@jackhammer7543 I haven't played either of the games, but from the plot synopsis it seems like a perfectly logical continuation of the narrative and themes of the original. Much like the original it's not even an imaginative new concept... it's a generic "revenge am bad" story. The primary criticism I've seen of the story is that it killed Joel... not only is that a logical next step for the narrative but it's practically written into the ending of TLOU: it is very clear that Joel is going to get his sooner or later. But now gamer kids are having a fit because they identified with a murdering psychopath who doomed humanity to a zombie plague... also there are gay people, which means that the game is "political" now... as though a setting where the US government is shooting people on sight and keeping the rest as prisoners is a completely apolitical game with no meaning beyond cool zombie adventures.

I prefer “TLOU2 - the entirely unnecessary sequel hellbent on telling me the same story as the first one in as boring a way as possible” The first game did a decent, if stereotypical, job of expressing that human beings suck, unfortunately the ending was a bit shit for not doing what 99% of games like this would have done and that’s make the ending a choice The second game is just non stop narrative dissidence. “Revenge is bad, and to prove that I’m going to murder several hundred innocent people like me dear old pappy Joel” It’s gotten compared to RDR2 but at least in that game Arthur actually sticks to his opinions. His whole deal is that Dutch has gone mad with his quest for vengeance and vocalizes against it, only to stay for the people he wants to protect, namely Jack. What makes RDR and RDR2 ultimately depressing but compelling isn’t their truly unique take on criminal life or revenge, but that they are very normal stories that are told through the lens of interesting characters, as opposed to a girl who’s only defining traits are 1.) now gay 2.) angry John wants redemption through earning a free life with his family, Arthur wants redemption by getting John Jack and Abigail away from Dutch before it’s too late, and Ellie wants to pretend she’s a good person after she murdered a hundred innocent people and decided to turn the other cheek on the only one with plot importance because everyone knows that if they don’t have more than 15 minutes of screen time they aren’t real humans

God of War 4's story was alright, but it leaves way too many things unresolved and is spread really thin and goes on way too long for how little of actual note happens in it. That scene was total vapid bullshit if you think about it for more than 2 seconds too. Remember the dynamic between Sam and Henry in the first game where Henry wouldn't allow sam to have any fun because a theme of the world was that basic shit wasn't kosher anymore because it distracted you from survival? Yeah Ellie kinda proves the point in that scene, but it's hard to focus on when I'm distracted by how out of place a working PSVita was in the post apocalypse. The outbreak in TLOU1 happens on September 26, 2013 according to the lore, but IRL the PSVita came out November 14, 2013, meaning the implication is there that people went out and bought a PSVita during a zombie outbreak and then preserved it for YEARS somehow. If druckmann was such a good writer he would have either not put that scene in or had a damn good explanation for it. It's not even an offhand Easter Egg you have to go out of your way to find either, it's part of the progression of the main story.

Imagine if Ellie realized super early into Seattle that revenge was not worth it, and then the rest of the game was about just trying to get out of Seattle, with the WLF and the Scars trying to capture/kill her because of what she did to them. Maybe the WLF are super angry that she killed their best soldiers and they want revenge, and maybe the Scars find out she's immune, and try to capture her for their creepy cult. That way Dinah being pregnant would actually matter for the story, and it could be about Ellie trying to convince Tommy that the whole trip is a mistake. You could still have a lot of the same things happen, but Ellie wouldn't be some terrible maniac. Although, this version of the story doesn't really have room for Abby as a playable character, so ND would have never done it in the first place.

Its can be a brave decision, particuarly with games. Economically, its a brave decision either way. Tragic games are much, much harder to sell, and they are also much harder to make work than your average mainstream kind of game. But considering they are harder to make work, and TLOU2 shows pretty well how hard you can fail if you dont get things right, that also means a higher risk in an artistic sense. And sure, TLOU2 sold pretty well. But thats just because of the name.

People note how audiences are less fond of miserable works of fiction and think that's purely based on audiences just wanting feel-good moments. It's not - the problem is that audiences are less willing to accept plot contrivances when said contrivances only cause misery, and they're less willing to accept a work of fiction that is nothing BUT misery, rather than one that ends on a miserable note. Final Fantasy Tactics and FF7: Crisis Core both end on very miserable terms, with sad, pointless deaths of prominent main characters when they were within spitting distance of their happy ending. They both also have a lot of misery during the story, with tragic deaths all over the place. But both of them have bright moments amidst the tragedy, and both of their tragic endings feel earned. It's easier to write a palatable uplifting story, but that's not because audiences can't accept tragic ones. It's just because audiences won't accept BADLY WRITTEN tragic ones. It's like saying it's a bold decision to cook a five-course dinner for a family gathering instead of just ordering something to be delivered. Sure, it's common to just keep things simple and get pizza delivered, but if the person making the five-course dinner amateurishly fucks up the cooking, you'll WISH you'd just gotten the pizza instead.

Why do we need to see Joel's literal fucking brain matter on Abby's favourite 9 iron? Because it's sad. Why does every character lack charisma and chemistry? Because it's sad. (and sad people can't talk to each other like real people because bad writing) Why do the Scars hate a trans person even though they have other INCREDIBLY SERIOUS problems? Because it's sad. Why does Jesse die before getting to meet his kid? Because it's sad. Why does Tommy end up blind, crippled and divorced? Because it's sad. Why does Ellie have PTSD of Joel's death... Actually I like this. Why does everyone leave Ellie alone in an incredibly harsh world when she has very severe mental issues? Because it's mother fucking sad. Fucks sake, even Logan, one of the most depressing movies ever had lighthearted moments and a bitter sweet ending. Taking away a bitter sweet ending (like the one at the end of the first game) and just making every character sad, alone and giving them the worst ending possible isn't good writing, it isn't brave, it's just there to get cheap tears and gasps out of the audience.

The Red Dead Redemption series has a much better take on the cycle of revenge that isn't hamfisted until it gets obnoxious. John Marston taking revenge upon Micah for what he did to the gang and Arthur Morgan, which eventually leads to the Pinkertons and Ross finding him, and as a result, hold his family captive until he gets his former gang members; when that happens, Ross kills him anyway, leaving Jack to take revenge, becoming the one thing Arthur and John tried to fight against him becoming; an outlaw. Having not only your loved ones die but eventually having the people around you turn into someone you fought to not have happen, and that all of the sacrifices were made worthless in the end. Here it's just "hur everyone dead now durrr deep writing"

I think, the point is not that it is unrealistic that similar characters are attracted to each other, it is more that in story telling, you would want these characters to have some kind of chemistry. It's hard to define how to get this chemistry, but if you have characters that have at least different opinions in certain areas you can make them argue, discuss and so on and therefore build them. If they are the same, what are they even going to talk about?

I really hate how games do unlikeable protagonists nowadays, especially because their bad aspects are completely forced, we have no control over these characters- in gameplay we can try to be as ethical as a saint and then cutscene time and suddenly your character decides war crimes and pushing old ladies down escalators is the best past time. I much more admire games like Disco Elysium where your character is an absolute wreck of a human being and has done so much horrible shit you hear about, but now you're in control to actually try and turn him into a (somewhat) functioning member of society or go down the highway to hell, it's all in your control! You can make commentary like that, but let's not pretend that you should definitely be more afraid of your fellow man when actual undead abominations are walking the earth. Like for real, I'm tired of zombie stories just being thinly veiled excuses to have a bunch of soap opera survivor drama. If a story about horrible bloodthirsty creatures that defy nature with their very existence isn't interesting enough, that's not the fault of the premise, that's the writer's fault for being too shit to do anything interesting with that idea and needing to compensate with some easy-as-shit survivor drama.

Ellie cutting Abby down, having a conversation about how they've impacted each others' lives and finally expressing forgiveness would've been a better ending to me. Also, since the player spent all of Abby's section of the game knowing what was coming next, playing as Ellie presumably pursuing revenge but in reality pursuing peace would've been a neat twist.

i THINK the point (i may be giving ND a bit too much credit) is that a story like this ending the way you 'want' it to would not fit the tone or themes of the game. TB was the only one seriously voicing concerns with a mainstream audience and the industry took him seriously but what we're seeing now with walkouts, mass burnout, high turnover, and constant crunch time is just a product of the cutthroat nature of the business because fans always demand more than a studio can provide at any one time. It's not like they waited for him to die, alive or not we'd be in the same place with the industry and it's only getting worse. A good story, good gameplay, or good characters to follow through the game (not all are necessary) are more than enough to satisfy gamers. The issues you've pointed out are much more a product of corporate decisions, typically to try to "streamline" the game production process in order to maximize profit, without taking their own employees, or their customers for that matter, into account. I think if a character gets hurt a lot in a believable way it can add to that character being compelling, but no it can’t be the only reason they’re compelling. John McClane from Die Hard gets the absolute hell beaten out of him the moment the terrorists take over, and all those beatings do add to his overall compelling interest for people. I mean the one liners and great kills help, but you get the point.
@neliz2k

In the Tomb Raider example, you get impaled one second, and are firing machine guns while slamming into a rock wall five minutes later. If you want us to feel for this character, make the pain permanent... chop off an arm or something, or have a Quicktime event doing that. but this is just like watching Rey facing different kinds of "struggle"
@jacobgerber3666
@jacobgerber3666 4 жыл бұрын
With John McClane, its compelling because the injuries pile up. Each one takes away from his ability to fight and make him more vulnerable to the enemies. By the time it all ends, McClane is limping and looks ready to pass out. But he compensates for this by cleverly tricking his opponents. With Video games, this doesn't work as well. Cutscenes can have a character get the living shit kicked out of them, but if they reduce gameplay each time a character gets hurt in a cutscene, then as time goes on, playing them would just get tedious as you're forced to deal with penalty after penalty, especially if you have no say.
@Thoreaux
@Thoreaux 4 жыл бұрын
In video games any injury a character suffers during a cutscene has an asterisk next to it which by default says "not gameplay, doesn't count." You want the player to feel the pain of the character you have to make what happens in cutscenes more consequential than "you were at the top of the cliff, now you're at the bottom." Break the security the player normally feels that the only way their character can really suffer is if they make mistakes during gameplay. I empathize more with the vulnerability of Doomslayer when his health is low and I know the only way to replenish it is by charging into another fight than I do with Lara after watching a graphic cutscene of her getting knocked around.
@Thoreaux
@Thoreaux 4 жыл бұрын
@@jacobgerber3666 Dealing with piled-on cutscene damage would get tedious if it's used tediously, that's something the writers and designers would have to consider when they, the ones who decide what happens to the character in cutscenes, block out the course of the game. Any time a player character gets hurt during a cutscene it's a plot point and it should serve the story in some way. If you have a scene where one of the character's hands are maimed, if the scene is not totally pointless, and if you want the character's suffering to matter to the player, then of course the plot detail has to have gameplay consequences. If it gets to the point where the character is so injured that you have to wonder how they're capable of doing anything, or playing them sucks because they're totally crippled, you might think about doing some rewrites, or else find things for the character to do that are still fun for the player that don't require being as able-bodied.

I don't understand why people say that 'you just don't understand abby.' Why the HELL would we WANT to care? After killing Joel, the chance to maybe understand her is thrown out the window. The thing that she did was so horrible, nobody wants to understand her. No wait, even CAN'T understand her. In my opinion. No matter the reason, a horrible deed cannot be explained, or should be. For instance, let's say someone raped a person, or a child. Would you want to know the reason for that person's action? Fuck that! And that's the same thing that a lot of players feel about Abby. We DON'T want to understand, because she's already dead in our eyes. And after finishing the game, it only makes me want to kill her more.

@@oh4835 I agree with alot of that. I think the biggest design flaw in the story was viewing the audience as its own entity. I (and it sounds like u too) was seeing things through ellies eyes. I could never get that invested in abbys story (which wouldve been a cool solo game btw) because it had nothing to do with whom I was viewing as the main character. The protagonist. I know it was supposed to humanize the antaognist, but if ellie (me) doesnt see it, its never a valid arch to the original plot. @@adamkrasneski3679 When making a character, the maker has to give the same amount of respect towards it. Cause we play and act through the character. It makes the character US. That is what differentiate video games from other types of media. When Neil cuckmann says you're not supposed to invest in a character, according to his 'brilliant' logic, we shouldn't read books or watch movies. Cause the sole purpose that people keep coming to it, is cause we invest in the story and characters. And to people who say the makers can do whatever the hell they want with their product, here's this. IT'S A PRODUCT. Cuckmann and it's followers say it's art, but it's a product first. They're a COMPANY. Not a charity group. You have to sell it before anything else. Sure, he could do anything he wants. We, the 80% of people can also NOT buy any work of cuckmann in return. Considering how much Naughty Dog hyped the "grounded" setting for the first game, to the point that Scientific American even wrote an article praising it, someone should have asked if it's even possible to vaccinate against a fungal infection. Or how vaccines are made. Or how the Fireflies could distribute a vaccine and convince people to take it despite their reputation as indiscriminate murderers. Or how Abby's dad could know enough to make a vaccine single-handedly when the outbreak happened in his twenties. Or how many clean vials and needles are even left in the hospital. Or why they wouldn't just eat the fucking zebra. I guess one of the benefits of being the head writer and also everyone's boss is that the rest of the team is professionally obligated to agree with all your ideas, which always works out great.

You could ask the scientists working on fungal vaccinations right now in reality. They've made some good progress. Also, the Fireflies have a reputation as indiscriminate murderers among FEDRA and their propaganda, not among people actually living under FEDRA's boot in most cases. Distribution would certainly be difficult, but what makes you think it's impossible? And you know Jerry had been working on this vaccine basically the whole time, right? Books still exist. He can still conduct research. And the Fireflies in Salt Lake City aren't hurting for food that they need to eat a zebra, dude. That's kind of absurd.

He doesn't give up hope even as he witnesses atrocities left and right, even as he commits them himself! The "line" between player and protagonist becomes more and more defined with every encounter. It's not trying to immerse you into his shoes as much as it tries to make you painfully aware that your character is becoming a monster with every step towards the bitter end.
