A documentary on Bush put it best. "Reagan played the war hero in movies, Bush was a war hero. Reagan played the athlete, Bush was the captain of his Yale baseball team. Reagan preached family values, Bush was the only one who could point to a happy family." Everything Reagan wanted to portray to the American People, Bush already was. And THAT is what made Bush seem to have so much integrity, and indeed he did have integrity.

Cant argue with this. IMO the main reason he lost reelection was because people tend to get sick of something theyve had for too long (in this instance, republican leadership for 12 years). Bush Sr was by far the most moderate president weve had in the last 50 years. His great experience in politics led to a very effective foreign policy during his term. His downfalls were not being relatable enough, and lagging economy that caused him to budge in and raise taxes

You missed possibly the biggest political outsider of all-time: Jimmy Carter. Yes, Carter. At the time, voters were reeling from the Watergate scandal and Nixon, and were furious about Ford pardoning Nixon. They wanted someone who had long been outside of big Washington politics. Carter was just a quiet governor from a southern state and his fresh, honest demeanor won people over.

Competent? Yes. Good president? No. The former director of the CIA helped orchestrate the original afghan conflict and was a major piece in launching the US into its entanglement with the conflicts and the destruction of the Middle East we see even today. He helped topple relatively stable and progressive governments and replaced them with warlords and drug kingpins, he literally funded and weaponized the “original” terrorist group, the Mujahideen, because he wanted to topple afghanistans socialist experiment and get control of the poppy fields

@@calebdunlap7566 i think its ridiculous to pin the blame of 21st century American conflict in the middle east on hw bush. Far more of the burden of blame lies on his son, the one who actually got US boots on the ground and basically obliterated two entire countries within a couple years of each other. I'd also say say blaming HW Bush for the afghanistan conflict utterly one-sided and borderline deceitful. The opposition of the government in afghanistan was most certainly doing so for homegrown reasons, it was only after outright civil war sparked that anything we'd call a proper proxy war actually started, along with the funding of the mujahideen. It isn't a surprise since the PDPA was brutal in its handling of its people who opposed their reforms. Said PDPA also only gained power through assassinating the last autocratic president. You're acting like HW Bush started it unprovoked, which is entirely wrong. I'm incredulous you just conveniently ignore the context in why this happened. Let's not forget later that the first one to actually start the complete destruction of what was an otherwise peaceful country was the Soviets, *not* the Americans. The proxy war may have introduced modern war to the region, but the Soviet-Afghan war created the heavy militarization of society we so common associate with Afghanistan today. The soviets retreating also sparked *another* civil war that made it a nigh-on impossible region to live in. Millions had to flee solely because the Soviets just disliked the guy in charge. There was a BIG difference between two rival factions battling it out in a country and a full on superpower invading you. People who genuinely think the US was in the wrong for wanting to back the Mujahideen are mixing up their feelings about modern day US-middle east conflicts to that of the past. The biggest thing to criticize the US for in this instance was trusting Pakistan too much with their funding.
@manipulatortrash
@manipulatortrash 3 ай бұрын
@@geb5370 this is such a braindead response, its utterly mind boggling anyone could say this. Of all the instances HW Bush meddled in the Middle East, this is maybe the one he handled the best. He didn't start the Gulf war, thats pure delusion to even suggest he did it to "kick the vietnam curse." He said that when the conflict was already happening to suggest the war would be handled far better in terms of military logistics (which is 100% true and was a complete masterpiece of war) and the politics that would guide the war's course and its goals. Guess what? He was 100% right. Invading Iraq afterwards would be a stupid move, you'd be crazy to not agree. HW Bush said it himself, "To occupy Iraq would shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab world against us, and make a broken tyrant into a latter-day Arab hero." You're also ridiculously wrong about implying that HW Bush somehow started the uprisings (LMAO). That has no basis on reality and is solely based on American and Iraqi citizens complaining that the US somehow halting coalition forces on the border of Iraq was encouragement for uprisings. Some of the most vocal critics were literally Kurds living in the US, of course they'd complain the US didn't intervene on their ancestral kin's behalf. The US was concerned with more than just Iran being in power as well. The original mission of the coalition was to expel an occupation literally no one in the region was all that happy about, to help the likes of the Kurds even more than the no-fly zone would literally just mean US boots on the ground or outright funding an overthrow of Saddam's government, which would similarly shake up relations between the US and its coalition allies. This entire comment somehow just exudes of someone who never looked into the geopolitical reasons as to why any of this happened, almost like someone who wasn't alive when it happened perhaps (I don't see how you could make the mistake of misattributing the timeline of that quote otherwise).

Outsider bias plays a major role in why, in general, we flip between Republican and Democrat frequently. By the end of 4 or 8 years, the person in office is generally viewed as “part of the swamp” and usually have strong party control. So people want the newest guy, and what’s newer than the person from the party opposite of the current one?

As someone who could be best described as a social/traditional conservative, I have my own set of issues with neo-cons. I will admit that for the time period, neo-cons and neo-libs played a vital role in the final decade of the Cold War and the first decade after. It started getting really wonky after year 2000. George H.W. Bush was a man above reproach. While I admire Clinton and Reagan’s ability to charm and to navigate politics, I’ve found both as people to be snakes and to varying degrees, charlatans. Bush had the personal integrity, military experience, federal government experience, and understanding of the world both domestically and internationally, to have deserved every bit of a second term. At least for now, and probably for the conceivable future, Bush was the last true statesman as President of the United States.

To be honest, I don't think that debate question would have been very informative anyway, and it's a little sad that elections come down to media-created sideshows like "who looked at their watch during a debate" rather than sober policy analysis. That being said, Bush was the beneficiary of a much more egregious debate question in 1988 (the death penalty one).

To the subject - George H. W. Bush was the original 'compassionate conservative'. Most remarkable is the collaborative efforts of Bush and Clinton in their post-office years. Each rendered a significant share of their remaining energy / political-capital toward efforts to 'make-the-world-better'. A mature friendship evolved.

It is important to note that Clinton beat Sanders pretty handily in the 2016 Democratic primary, and that if the Democratic primary voting base -- who are typically more progressive than Democrats and the American voting public overall -- wanted a Bernie Sanders they would have voted for Bernie Sanders. Also important to note that Clinton won the popular vote in the general. That being said, Bernie did win the primary in Michigan (albeit by tight margins) and Wisconsin (by a wider margin), but lost in Pennsylvania. Thinking about these three crucial states in particular, I don't know if it's easy to say that a self-described socialist from the incumbent party would have been able to beat a loud-mouthed outsider from the opposition in 2016. There's an argument to be made that if Hillary had spent more time in WI, MI, and PA, she would have won. The argument could also be made that someone like Joe Biden would have kicked Donald Trump's teeth in if he had run in 2016. Also interesting to note that the last time the incumbent party got a third presidential term in a row was in 1992, when George H. W. Bush, the quintessential insider, continued the GOP's hold on the White House through an election he won by a pretty comfortable margin.
@cbl1984

There's this myth that somehow Sanders would have beaten Trump. In this country Socialism *will never beat* Capitalism! The ads against Sanders would have been devastating, from his support of Castro, to his support of the Soviet Union & Communist China, either true or lies, it wouldn't have mattered. Bernie would have had to spend precious time trying to educate people about "democratic socialism" vs. Socialism & Commmunism, that he would not have been able to focus on Trump, and he would have been beaten.
@matthewscott8692
@matthewscott8692 3 ай бұрын
She didn't handily beat Sanders by any means. The DNC uses super delegates to pick the candidate so she would've won regardless because the money of the party was behind her.

Career politicians have their place. Biden has done a hell of a job getting the country and the economy back on track. Unemployment is at record lows and inflation has been slowed. Sure, it may not be "great" for the average American but he has made America's economy be one of the only ones in the WORLD currently not in recession. Look at the facts. Its true whether you like it or not. Could an outsider have done that? Sure. But Biden has both the knowledge and experience to get it done.
