The Nawab Nazim was born into one of the most powerful royal families in India’s history, with a kingdom that ranged from the great Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal. Seen as a threat by British authorities, he was forced to abdicate in 1880, marking a significant historical turn and changed fortunes for his secret English family. Lyn Innes tells the bitter-sweet history of her great-grandfather and ancestors who journeyed from royalty to relative anonymity in the captivating book, The Last Prince of Bengal: A Family's Journey from an Indian Palace to the Australian Outback. In conversation with author, journalist and historian, Shrabani Basu, Innes discusses the intimate story of a family connected to sweeping events in Indian, British and Australian history.
Lyn Innes - has a PhD from Cornell University and taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she became associate editor of OKIKE: An African Journal of New Writing, founded by Chinua Achebe, with whom she co-edited two volumes of African short stories. Innes is currently Emeritus Professor of Postcolonial Literatures at the University of Kent, Canterbury.
Shrabani Basu - is a journalist and Sunday Times best-selling author. Her books include the critically acclaimed The Mystery of the Parsee Lawyer: Arthur Conan Doyle, George Edalji and the Foreigner in the English Village, For King and Another Country: Indian Soldiers on the Western Front 1914-18, Victoria & Abdul (now a major Oscar-nominated motion picture starring Dame Judi Dench and Ali Fazal) and Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan. She is the founder and chair of the Noor Inayat Khan Memorial Trust which campaigned for a memorial for the World War II heroine in London which was unveiled by Princess Anne in 2012. Shrabani is a frequent commentator on radio and television.
