“The Last Prom” (c. 1970s) is a color film by Southerby Productions Inc. that warns against the dangers of underage drinking and driving. Specifically, the film underscores the all-too-common story of underage drinking accidents that occur on prom night. In the dramatization students Judy, Sandy, Bill, and Jim meet a tragic fate on what should have been a memorable and fun prom night, as what they thought were some innocent teenage antics turned deadly.
Judy and Sandy discuss prom in entryway of perhaps late 70s retro modern interior of family home (0:06). Sandy and mother talk about prom in kitchen featuring white cabinets, dark wood trim (1:18). Jim, Bill drive past each other and stop for quick conversation on quiet tree-shaded dirt road - one drives white perhaps 1972 Ford Econoline 200 van, other on small motorbike (1:28). Hallway of high school, green tin lockers line walls, students walk in all directions rushing to next class - Judy, Sandy, Bill, and Jim strike up conversation about prom (2:11). Sandy giddy on phone with prom date in childhood bedroom, pink gingham fabrics, stuffed animals decorate the room (2:47). Prom committee decorates school gymnasium, streamers hung from basketball hoops, disco ball spins on ceiling (3:19). Scenes cut between Sandy and Bill preparing for prom: Sandy tries on various 1970s frilly prom dresses while Bill sifts through hangers of 1970s suits, purchasing corsage (3:34). Prom day: Sandy and mother staring at their reflections in mirror at home, Sandy wears voluminous blue ruffle gown and hair is in an updo; shows off outfit for her father eagerly waiting to take photos (4:20). Bill picks Sandy up at home, parents take photos of the prom couple before scene switches to decorated gymnasium (4:45). While girls sneak off to the bathroom, Jim takes bottle of alcohol out of suit jacket and offers it to Bill (6:12). Girls bathroom: Sandy, Judy other girls in their prom dresses stare at their reflections in large mirror while adjusting makeup (6:24). Aerial view of decorated gym, couples slow dance under light of disco ball (7:38). Sandy, Judy, Bill, Jim sit at table; Sandy looks on apprehensively as Bill and Jim spike drinks under the table (8:05). Couples on dance floor (8:53). Sandy, Judy, Bill, Jim sneak away to parking lot to Bill’s van; drink some beers before driving off into town while it's dark (10:15). Rock music blares on stereo as Judy and Jim begin kissing in the back of the van, Bill speeds down highway chugging can of beer, deranged look on face illuminated by headlights of oncoming traffic along road (11:39). Close-up of speedometer (13:13). Faces of concern come over the other passengers in the car as the see headlights coming straight at them, Bill scoffs off their concerns, screech sounds and Sandy’s face seen going through windshield (13:34). First responders arrive at scene: Bill, Jim appear bloody and lifeless; glass and debris spread on ground, first responders lay white sheet over deceased (13:46). Dramatic music plays as Judy, covered in blood, is helped by first responders; witnesses with somber faces gather round and observe scene (14:33). Paramedic in orange jacket closes doors to Rescue 10 Batesville Community Life Squad ambulance (Indiana) (15:44). Flash of police camera illuminates scene of wreck as he takes photos for investigation (15:52). Rescue 10 Batesville Community Life Squad ambulance headlights and car slowly come into focus, paramedic pages Margaret Mary Community Hospital (16:11). Nurse meets paramedics for ambulance handover; emergency nurses and doctors prepare Sandy for treatment - start IV fluids, hook her up to monitors (17:14). Close-up of heart monitor display screen, heartbeat flatline sound (18:11). Surgeon informing Sandy’s parents in dimly lit hospital waiting room of her passing (18:19). Two school desk chairs kept empty in front of classroom; teacher makes speech to class in appeal to curb underage drinking and driving (18:35). Hearse, cars drive along tree-lined road towards cemetery, Sandy’s funeral (19:43). Footage cuts between men, priest carrying casket towards grave site and flashback footage of Sandy and Bill’s interactions (20:55).

I graduated in 1979 from a small Catholic school and was in a bad wreck in 1978. All six of us were injured. We weren’t drunk but my cousin was an insane driver and blew a red at over 70. I had a lap belt on but it failed and I slammed into the windshield anyway. I can relate to this cheesy film.

Wow! When you make a PSA film, it doesn't need to be feature length. Also, no father should let their daughter go with a boy who drives a van. Young Sheldon covered this better!

Yup, I saw this movie in senior health class in 1987, seven years after it was produced. It’s apparently a a remake of an original made in t 1960 (no alcohol involved, just poor justice in driving).

Fear based which you are spreading. Why? I guess you weren't around during the 70s time was different then.. Missing the fear and paranoid that we are subject to now. I graduated in 1976 our school wasn't that big everyone new each other parents knew each other. This movie took me right back to the time. Sorry you weren't there in that era and your fear based misunderstanding comparing then and now.50 some odd years later when the family unit is gone. Are you always this frightened? Iam truly sorry for whatever happened to make you feel like this. Th world is different now. Blessings
