This week, Andy hosts Ben Raines - award winning environmental journalist, filmmaker, author...and Charter Captain.
Tune in to hear Ben share the incredible story of how he solved America’s last great archeological maritime mystery by locating the Clotilda - the last ship to deliver slaves to the United States - in the middle of a murky Alabama swamp.
Learn what (and who) inspired him to do it, hear the remarkable story about the town Clotilda survivors founded after emancipation, what obstacles he continues to face in his push to unearth the Clotilda, and why he calls the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, America’s Amazon.
Pre-order The Last Slave Ship: the True Story of How Clotilda Was Found, Her Descendants, and an Extraordinary Reckoning, which releases January 25, 2022.

It is sad and maybe one day people will care about them. I wish people would care about the wrongs of the past and the present so we can work towards a better future

@@luffypupperstien2706 they don't even care about the past, beyond weaponising it. There's always blindspots as a result. This is a fascinating story and certainly should be told. But notice how nobody asks, if the US and European nations abolished slavery in the early 1800's why the dahomey had thousands of slaves in 1860 to buy from? The answer is uncomfortable for some. Their time in Africa is rarely mentioned, because it dispels popular myths about who did the slaving and brutality.

A less talked about subject is what happened in Africa, because it upsets some pretty common myths. For example nobody is asking, if the US and Europe abolished the slave trade in the early years of the 1800's why did the dahomey have a warehouse of over a thousand slaves for the captain of the Clotilda to buy from?

Another question is why was okay to purchase humans.
@josm1481

@@Benyamin_Eliyahu. because until the European enlightenment the concept of individual freedoms and liberties didn't really exist. Or at least weren't widely accepted. The African kings (and all other rulers) saw humans as objects. There's to buy and sell.

@@Benyamin_Eliyahu. slavery is part of Islamic law and always will be. No Islamic nation ever abolished slavery without Western influence and there was no Islamic abolitionist movement.

Facts you're not told: a larger proportion of sailors died in the middle passage than slaves, 20% Vs 15%. But there were a lot more slaves.
