Note the downward position of this Longimanuses pectoral fins & arching of its back. Oceanic Whitetips are definitely a species of shark one should take very seriously, as they will not hesitate to attack. They are predators inhabiting the wide areas of the oceans where prey is scarce & no feeding opportunity can be passed up or starvation might closely follow. Thus they're easily caught & being driven to extinction by the finning industry due to that & their extremely large fins. I They have no fear of humans or anything else for that matter & have a long generational history of associating humans with feeding opportunities due to wars, downed aircraft in the oceans & shipwrecks or capsized sailboats & ferries, etc... stranding survivors or dead & injured people in the water for hours, days or even longer periods of time upon which these sharks among others have preye As one commenter stated, there is a video of an unprovoked longimanuses attack on KZfaq but, this is not it. This shark is simply probing, warning by posturing & seeking an opportunity to strike, if the diver exhibits any sign of weakness or shows he's in any way vulnerable, in which case this shark will not hesitate to take advantage.

Really dangerous sharks are the Black Type (Zambezi) We had multiple direct touch contact during diving in South Africa (Umkomaas) It was the real danger of our life so there is no video))))

CoolaJokern You are so right. Having dived with Oceanics many times I can assure u I would feel less nervous in the water with a Great White or even a Bull Shark. Oceanics are are no joke & it's best to leave the water sooner than later when one shows up. We are food to them & that's all. Their entire agenda is about feeding at every opportunity. They evolved that way for good reason. Most deaths of shipwrecked sailors, downed pilots, etc.. can be attributed to these swimming noses with just one thing on their minds & they're utterly fearless & unintimidated by human beings or anything else. I agree. Best to high tail it out of the water when Longimanus makes an appearance. Not an occasion for macho or bravado female or male showing of foolish courage & becoming fish food. They are powerful, very agile & very, very fast fish with serious debtician meant to make short work of whatever they can catch. You're really smart & honest. I like your style. You're probably a great dive buddy. I learned to dive with navy seals. They don't mess around. Very serious about their work & not macho one bit. No unnecessary risks. Just focused on missions & avoiding unnecessary confrontations with sharks & other sealife. They taught me to respect the life in the oceans & avoid provoking uneccessary interactions that will get u killed or badly maimed. All good lessons that have served me well over the years. It's been all about respect & taking sharks very seriously.

There is a video on KZfaq of a legitimate oceanic white tip attack. This isn't it.

This is an interesting video w/o falsifying the caption. What strikes me ( no pun intended however!) is how close & possibly annoying the diver ( in shorts) is to the shark, esp species Oceanic Whitetip. Another diver has his back to the shark while being filmed, why? So lucky this shark took a pass despite being served opportunity on a platter.

The diver ( in shorts) it's me ;) at the time I was actively studying sharks as a hobby. This situation turned out to be a bit dangerous, but sharks never attack a large object from the first approach. This diver was decompressing after a technical dive and didn't see the shark, but all ended well. Most of all the diver who filmed us was frightened, he was not psychologically prepared for such a thing.

Never scuba dive with Oceanic White Tips. Tigers and Bulls are dangerous to swimmers, but not as much so to scuba divers. Other sharks are fine.

In South Africa I had an experience with a Bull Shark, there were about 40 of them and four of us divers. 15 minutes of direct contact showed me the real danger of this type of shark. For me, the Bull Shark is in the first place in terms of danger to divers. The statistics say so too.

@@mambled And not in the video. So what we may be witnessing is the possible antecedents to a potential future attack - an unconfirmed move to attack but not an attack in and of itself … well … as long as it’s not a legal statement, I guess everyone is fine … 😄

People think that when they see limbs bitten off it is an attack, but an attack starts a long time in advance and has several stages (I've been in these situations). In this video we see the penultimate stage of the attack before full contact.@@whynottalklikeapirat

All these Logimanus attacks all have the same thing in common, these sharks are telling you loudly they are not happy with you there and I'm cranky. Arched back and downward pecs mean trouble for you. This is the shipwreck shark guys. Any Marine will tell you these are the scariest sharks in the Ocean because once there's blood they'll finish you off.
