Today at the farm, we are attempting something my dad has never done before: planting soybeans into a standing corn crop. After enduring 15 inches of rain in June, we are forced to alter our crop plans as the growing season has passed its halfway point. No matter what happens from here on out, this will be the FINAL day planting of the year. Join us to see how this year's flooding continues to create unprecedented challenges on the farm.

Matthias, aka HiTech Farmer, is a 5th generation family farmer from Southwest Minnesota who promotes agriculture by capturing it through the lens of a camera, one video at a time. Passionate about emerging farm technologies and the benefits of 21st-century precision agriculture tools, such as farm equipment, GPS, and autonomous tractors, Matthias is determined to bring new methods into his operation. These methods can improve his farm's efficiency and sustainability into the future. Learning from his parents' (Mike and Dawn) work ethic, Matthias sees every day as an opportunity to educate and entertain about the daily triumphs and challenges his farm faces, whether technology-related or not. His mission is to share his enthusiasm and knowledge of agriculture as he embarks on what it means to be a farmer in the modern era.

Mind blowing software, and mind blowing engineering to make that software practically useful. Agriculture will become ever more challenging as atmospheric CO2 levels continue to rise.

Oooooh, how I wish I could time travel back to the 50s and show this podcast to the farmers of my family back then. Then again..., I might be burned at the stake for being demon possessed, or something like that?

@@HiTech_Farmer Good point, but I just don't see how there could be too much more advancements made than what we already have. Again, you making a crop off of those soybeans is the real interesting thing to watch for this fall.

That’s pretty late to be planting beans. We always said July 10th was the absolute cutoff date.

Agreed! Who knows, maybe mother nature will throw us a bone and push the frost date back

Come fall, if we get an early frost like in sept you wont have to worry about those replant beans they wont be worth harvesting. If we get a late fall like middle October we may have some beans to harvest but regardless youll be harvesting the corn before those beans. We're north of albert lea and we replanted about 40 acres of beans the last was the 14th. So its a risk but ya never know until we try

Glad I'm not the only one hoping for a late frost. Could be really interesting come this fall either way. Best of luck to you guys the rest of the growing season!

Your not the only one doing this. But it's smarter to do this save the soil and prevent weeds. Real nice you planted in your neighbors soybean field. The planter was there. I think harvest will be interesting. You might have to drive around, then harvest the bean when they have dried with the other header. Has it back to that blow out and mark tile flags with the globe. Even the rain is affecting some farmers here in the Northeast. Wishing you the best.

Without a doubt this harvest will be very interesting. But I agree, the weed mitigation and soil health benefits of growing a crop should pay for the years to come

Hello Matthias, when harvest time comes, you are going to lose money where you planted beans in your corn fields. Will crop insurance help with that? I'd also like to say you're a good neighbor to go into his field and replant for him. Plus, I'm sure you will be responsible for putting the fence up again.

Linda, at this point the crop insurance question is still up in the air as we do not know what the prices will be this fall, but at the current moment it's not looking good. Neighbors helping neighbors is part of farming
