Documentary entry representing Iowa at the 2015 high school National History Day competition at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland.
Teacher: Chris Green
Student: Alex Bare
School: North Scott High School (Eldridge, IA)
Division: Senior individual documentary
Ranking: Finalist, 14th in the nation
Some of the original music used in this video comes from a CD produced by the Meskwaki Nation called "From the Lodges of the Meskwaki Nation." It is available for purchase at the Meskwaki Nation's museum.
In retrospect, looking at the video in 2019, I would change the title. While the Meskwaki are the last federally recognized tribe based in Iowa, they are certainly not the only ones with land claims and deep heritage in this state (especially the Ioway people, for whom the state was named).
If you have any urgent corrections to add, feel free to contact me via Instagram / alexbaretv and I will happily note them here. I was 18 when I made this documentary and I know that my research was not complete and may contain inaccuracies.
Many thanks to the interviewees and others who helped me along the way, especially those at the Meskwaki Tribal Museum!

I am a mutt, I am half Navajo and half Meskwaki. I am also a descendant of Pushetonequa. It was recently discovered he was my grandmother's grandfather. As a result, I am 1/16 French. I know where my fight and drive for independence comes from.

@@soxmonki, I was born and raised in the Phoenix area. I'm officially registered as a Navajo and my mother is Meskwaki. The demeanor of my brothers and sister is very different than the local Native population. I've fallen victim to violence, accidents and survived cancer twice, with the last occurrence in my lower left lung. At the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, they noticed I had a lot of fight and unwillingness to give up when undergoing cancer treatments. I attribute my Meskwaki heritage for that fight in all situations. Yeah, that is enlightening on this brief history lesson on the Meskwaki.

Black hawk was a great leader, my relative. He tried hard to save his people, it was desperate, running around hiding. And fighting for their lives. It was probably the last native American war. They ended up being forced onto a reservation. But some hid out , and stayed in the old hunting grounds. Eventually, some tribal family bought some land in Iowa. Now we have about 8,000 acres of private property in Tama!

Some of your language is inappropriate. I think I understand what you are saying but this tribe should still be proud of what their chief did back in the 1800s. And it’s good to keep their culture and language alive. It’s too bad casinos have to be a part but I hope the tribe is able to improve lives of the Native people living in Tama. I hope the students take advantage of the opportunities they are given. The way you describe young people is nationwide. Probably worldwide. I know most make good decisions and pray it continues.
