My family was friends of "Uncle Jack Brownell" the former XO of Sub base New London. Uncle Jack told me about this Uboat and the Blackpoint (I was a crewmember of the USS Blenny (SS324) based in NL, and would visit Uncle Jack occasionaly staying at his home for weekends). He related to me the real story of the Uboat that sank the Blackpoint. The Uboat had radioed New London that they wanted to surrender, and Uncle Jack set up barracks for the crew, expecting them to arrive soon. But he learned later that this same Uboat had sunk the Blackpoint, and three destroyers were immediately sent out to hunt down and destroy the Uboat, which they did, showing no mercy. I learned later that this was a very successful Uboat and crew, whose old experienced captain had been transferred to shore duty, and a new inexperienced skipper replaced him, hungry for action and to prove himself. After having radioed New London, he decided last minute, apparently, to torpedo the Blackpoint, before turning himself and his Uboat in. It cost the lives of his valiant crew, who had up to this point miraculously survived the war.

Records show that the uboat did not respond to uboat command prior to this sinking . A depth charge attack previously to the north was suspected to have damaged the radio equipment . I would be highly suspect of that story .

Interesting to think about what would’ve happened if he got captured and sent to prison for murder. Would not want to be a Nazi officer in an American prison in 1945

In the 1960's the submarine hatch was breached for a Hollywood movie and the German government protested it as a war grave. I'm from Pt. Judith and my uncle was President of The Naval War College in Newport 79-82. Great Torpedo Hall of Fame there.

My hometown is Moberly, Mo. Moberly was an important rail center and home town of Gen Omar Bradley. USS MOBERLY was originally the SCRANTON. My guess was that it was renamed to honor Brad. You'd think that we'd have been proud of USS MOBERLY PF-63's historical activity. We know nothing about this ship. I found out around Halloween 2022. Live and learn. Thanks for having this video.

11:00 The U boats had very strict transmission times (actually part of their demise), it was extremely unlikely that the U-Boat was not in a position to receive Doenitz's broadcast. Was there any note made in the log or diary which gave reason for the U-boat avoiding its comms window?

The U Boats operated with impunity along the coast of America, and in the Gulf of Mexico. Many U boat commander's and crew's have stated that the Hedgehog was the only weapon that they really feared.

The fishing boat jane Lorraine caught a unexploded depth charge in there net from this battle,it blew up in the net and bent the boat almost in half and did damage..bud champlin was owner,captain..he had to cut the boat in half to fix it so he added 10 ft to it and fished it for 50 more year's until he was 85 yo.... It sank just a few year's back...bud died a few yrs ago at 92...my mother has the top of the mast in her yard w a bird house on it...he was like my uncle..

Good job but you have omitted one more historical factoid. The U853 was spotted by USNR John G Bradley the day before the Black Point was sunk. He reported the sighting to the ODO with his and his crews report going unheeded.

This wasn't the last German U Boat attack of WW2. Maybe the last on east coast of USA. The last U Boat attack recorded was on a convoy in North Sea off the UK coast on May 8th. A Type XXI modern U Boat sank a merchant ship, Danish or Norwegian killing a number of crew. The U Boat escaped. Sorry to be a party pooper.
