A little fact for the people that enjoyed this movie- the tapestry in the opening song is an actual, antique tapestry.

Cool isn't it? If anyone wants to know, they're called the Hunt of the Unicorn or the Unicorn Tapestries. One of them is really damaged though. It's now in two fragments. You can find them in the Cloisters of the Metropolitan Museum of art I believe and they're really beautiful in person. I got really excited when I saw them since I recognized them from the Last Unicorn LOL

Fun fact: When Hayao Miyazaki was starting his own animation studio, he wasn't sure where he would get the staff necessary to run it. He was still very early in development, and he saw this movie, loved it, and discovered that it was going to be Rankin Bass's last movie because ITN was going bankrupt. Rankin Bass's animation offices were about to be out of a job so Miyazaki commissioned the entire staff to make Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind, and that became the first Studio Ghibli film; Nausicaa was in theaters before Miyazaki had incorporated, or even named the studio. The Last Unicorn is the mother of Studio Ghibli.

@Nikybeez7 ай бұрын
Rankin/Bass has a LOTR series following, but fittingly..., as it's Christmas Eve, plenty know them from the series of Christmas movies and other things they put out. It's like Hanna-Barbera. Some get it, some don't. I love Miyazaki, but I'm not sure it would be insulting to align him with others rather than have others be compared to him...

And the tapestry was a Christian one, where the unicorn(s) symbolized Christ. Early and medieval Christians regularly saw the unicorn as a picture of Christ. Songwriter Jimmy Webb apparently picked up on this association in the lyrics for this movie's songs. The last verse of the title song uses imagery that agrees with Christian imagery for Christ's second coming. ""Walking Man's Road" evokes Christ's incarnation with imagery similar to that in the gospels.
@Nikybeez5 ай бұрын
@@cw9817 Like so many theists, Christians tend to take symbols that predate their religion and apply it to their chosen beliefs (unicorns... walking...). This is simply a matter of opinion. Some would say those tapestries were often hung in bedrooms to celebrate marriages to virgins. And some connect the two. Still, it's only personal interpretations about fiction. Is that your take or the songwriter's words from an interview? If it's his take, I'd like to read the article. I haven't heard anything about anyone working on that movie, taking the symbolism and making it about their religion.

Jonathan Porter I think she just badly wanted to see a unicorn. I know many people in modern times long to see a unicorn or a faerie or something else they read about in stories. I'm a Brony, and if I ever saw a pony from MLP:FiM, I would probably break down too. Especially if that pony was Princess Celestia.

Because they have seen no unicorns for a while does not mean that we have all _vanished._ We do not _vanish._ There has never been a time without unicorns; we live forever! We are as old as the sky, old as the moon! We can be hunted or trapped; we can even be killed, if we leave our forests. But we do not _vanish._ Am I truly the last?" had to type that out

I never saw this movie as a kid, but it was one of my wife's favorites as a little girl. I've watched it a few times and can see why. It's one of the most visually stunning animated movies out there, especially considering the era it was made in, where cheap animation reigned supreme. Literally every scene in this movie is a work of art, from beginning to end - some of the most detailed scenery I've ever seen in an animated movie, right up there with Miyazaki, etc.. Particularly the side-scrolling scenes, where the animators used multiple layers of forest, vegetation, etc. panning at different speeds. I thought the sound track by America was goofy the first time I saw it, but it really does fit the movie well, and their music is very well composed. Wish I could've seen it when I was young, but at least our kids will get to enjoy it.
@Sinuev18 жыл бұрын
+wysoft Funny you should mention Miyazaki. IIRC, the studio in charge of the animation for this film were hired by him to do Naussica and the Valley of the Wind, and would go on to become some of the founding members of Studio Ghibli.

This honestly has to be one of the best openings to an animated film, or any, ever made. It's just so beautifully done, you can actually feel the emotional influence of the song, as well as the art and the overall meaning. I've taken this film far too much for granted over the years, possibly even forgetting about it altogether but recently being reminded of it. I really should watch it again sometime, I think the issue is that I just didn't understand it when I was younger, but now that I'm older and understand much more of it's meaning, I could appreciate it a lot more.

1ideity I also recommend the original book -- the movie is one of the most beautifully faithful translations any text has received, but the book itself is pure poetry. You weep on one page, and laugh yourself silly on the next. It's a profoundly neglected classic of modern mythology, somehow packing into an adventure story our fear of old age and of death, sorrow and nostalgia for lost youth, and the poignancy of what it means to be fully alive.

Agreed And this theme by America has now become one of my favorite soundtrack songs alongside many others. I think it’s even on one of their Greatest Hits albums. It’s not the first soundtrack song I’ve seen on a Greatest Hits album either which makes sense because they tend to stand out

An intresting fact about this story, Peter S Beagle got the idea from a tapestry he saw where it had bulls and unicorns fighting each other and he made up a wizard called Smendrick which he used to tell his children as a bedtime story, I would really love to see a film about him and his adventures.

Ugh crying ugly tears. 🥺 This really hits home... Me and my grandmother always watched the last unicorn when I was little. ❤️ This is truly an outstanding and beautiful classic. You are missing out if you haven’t seen it yet.

This song sounds like regret but acceptance, you’ve realized you wasted your life and haven’t done what you wanted, what you loved, but you know there’s nothing you can do to change it.

My sister and I used to watch this movie when we were little. We used to have this movie on VHS but it got stuck in the VHS player and we couldn't get it out. But we have it on DVD now.

2:23 onwards: Gosh.. I don't even know how to describe the emotions this stirs in me. Nostalgia mixed with something else so powerful. I never appreciated the beauty of this as a child, the movie confused me so much and some scenes traumatized me. But now I find this so beautiful and inspiring. edit: one thing... 1:32

Can’t believe this is 40 years old now. I wasn’t even born yet I recently saw this film for the first time and really enjoyed this film for what it was. Even it was truly bizarre. Loved this theme by America, I think it’s even on one of their Greatest Hits albums

I remember how I watched this movie long ago with my sisters-- everything was a lot happier then. Something about this movie-- this song in particular, has always made me feel a certain way. I don't know how to explain it, but it's comforting yet sad-- something that reminds you of what was one of your most purest and joyful memories

I totally agree with you on that! Sign me up too.... Lol. By the way everyone, I own this movie on Blu-ray&it's gorgeous and the story of the young girl that created the artwork in response to the poem, which she sent to the author, is fascinating. This lead to the concept for the movie. America is the band

blueclovergirl I am, i'm a straight guy who dug this movie for 29 years since i was 4. Good storytelling, nice cast, darkness, a badass monster and not to mention Lady Amalthea who definitely can stun any masculine fellow who watches this movie as she is on par with the likes of Black Cat when it comes to chicks with white hair. And ever heard of bronies?
@davidmourning62378 жыл бұрын
+blueclovergirl I know this comment is a year too late, but what was the joke.... women want a man with washboard abs who is sensitive and shares her interests, but I'm sorry ladies, that guy already has a boyfriend. :D

I want to say we need another Rankin Bass, another company with this kind of art and beauty, but we don't. We have this one, and so long as we rewatch it and share it, we'll never lose it.

Everything in that drawing is adorable. From the soundtrack to the characters. You identify with the characters' emotions. One of my favorite drawings. I can see it always and always. I would like Lean and Amalthea to have his happy end. I feel always nostalgic and melancholic when I see it The Last Unicorn, but in a positive way.

I've seen this movie before, and I loved the colors and animation. The name of the movie, The Last Unicorn, is even more amazing. I even had an idea of creating a car in the movie's namesake, because I just realized: Today is the 40th anniversary of The Last Unicorn; that, and it's truly amazing. Probably call it the Rankin-Bass Unicorn GTX.

This is a great movie, with songs I love. It was over a decade before I could even listen to this song without crying. I'm old enough to have seen it in the theater, and I'll always be glad my mom took me to see it. FYI for those getting a copy of the movie, try to get the old VHS if you can. The 25th anniversary release is slightly censored, for the worse IMO.
