“It’s no use.” The last words of the American actor Marlon Brando made to his long time friend and fellow actor Karl Malden over the phone. Despite his immense talent as an actor, Brando became increasingly difficult to manage and had earned a reputation as a "bad boy" for his public outbursts and antics, on and off the screen. “There's a line in 'The Wild One' where Johnny snarls, 'Nobody tells me what to do.' That's exactly how I've felt all my life,” Brando once said. Late in his life, Brando became a recluse. He required oxygen and was morbidly obese and frequently in pain, but refused to let nurses or doctors see him at his home. He had refused permission for tubes carrying oxygen to be inserted into his lungs, which was the only way to prolong his life. He died of respiratory failure from pulmonary fibrosis. Shortly before his death, Brando called up Malden: “I keep falling over…” he said, “I keep falling over…” When his elderly friend advised him to call for a doctor, Brando sighed:

My Dad passed away with the same thing, it's hardening of the lungs. There's less and less room for air to enter the lungs and you literally suffocate until your body gives out. It's a sad slow death. RIP

I think I remember his saying his parents were alcoholics. If they had not been, he said he would have been a much different person. He apparently was greatly affected by this childhood experience, which impacted his adult life. I feel compassion for what he suffered.

Intubation isn't into the lung, it's a tube into the trachea. Tubes into the pleural cavity (area around the lungs) are for draining and are closed systems.

Well if he was miserable why would he want his life prolonged? From his Connie Chung interview he didn't even seemed pleased to be the greatest actor either didn't care for a society of constant competition and disharmony either. There was no meaning to his work even if he was the best he was still just an actor wasn't curing cancer or anything.
