I wrote this song based on a story Levon Helms tells in The Last Walts. At a carnival or medicine show, after the last act, the MC would announce the Midnight Ramble. The songs would get juicier, the jokes funnier, and the cutest girl would really shake her stuff.
Of course, they never got naked - unless the local authorities were very susceptible to small gratuities...
