Hey Mike, we are so glad you loved the 308s! For the outside kick drum, we often use the 50Hz High Pass. I'll even go up to 120 for inside kick, which still has plenty of bottom end. The switchable top boost idea requires an external power supply like a tube mic. We did look at this, but the 308 takes EQ so well we decided to leave it out and keep the cost down. If you wanted a wide-open sound without EQ, that's the LS-208. The rejection isn't as good, but the sound is killer. Much more appropriate for snare, guitar, vocals etc... 😄

Nice! I'll definitely try it with the 120 roll off inside the kick on my next drum session! And that totally makes sense for the top boost thing. Like I said, EQing on the way in had never been an issue for me, but I know some people like getting things closer before adding EQ. But yeah, I can't wait to try the 208 at some point!

Man, those 91's sounded really good too, especially for being flat, but the 308's sounded pretty great, and definitely won in the bleed department. I've basically come to the conclusion with Tom Mic's, that it's not even always so much about how much bleed a mic gives you, but how the bleed sounds, and it definitely sounds natural, and pleasing with the 308's compared to the 91's. For studio stuff, I'm a fan of using my Tom Mic's as character/ambience Mic's if I can, but it doesn't always work, and then also sometime's it's obv not possible or do able to just clear everything but the Tom hits, so I could see these 308's working really well in those situations.

Yeah, I do like those Shures! They were my main tom mics for years before getting the Lautens and were what ultimately made me ditch my 421s (and I still use them when a drummer uses 3 or 4 toms). But yeah, like you said, the actual sound of the bleed is definitely important! You can get away with a lot more bleed (or, like you said, actual benefit from the bleed) when it actually sounds good. The 308s definitely do a good job with that. Even if I end up gating during the mix, it's so nice during tracking to be able to turn the toms up nice and loud without any issues.

@@BetterMixes all 4 for toms! I'm sure once drums were tracked I could use them for many other bass parts maybe upright basses also🙌🏼

I wonder whether this mic would work as a singing drummer's vocal mic? Sounds like it would sure cut down on the cymbal bleed, and its side-address design would allow mounting it upside down in front of my face without it getting in my hands' way. I only wonder whether having the large body of the mic right in front of my face might be annoying!

Yeah, it's definitely on the large side to hang in front of your face. Otherwise it might work! But you'd have to be pretty careful about singing right into it without moving around too much as even just an inch or two could change the sound and amount of pickup pretty dramatically.

I dont care about bleed. Really. I let the bleed on any mic and it never sounded bad! Never used gates. Still gonna try these mic´s out.

Still definitely worth trying! While the rejection was definitely the biggest selling point for me personally, I also think they just sound great on toms!

A good bit of compression, medium-hard hitting of the cymbals. Bleed happens 🤷

So... the thumbnail is a picture of a big red "X" over a 421... and then you test it against a different mic that virtually no one prefers on toms?

It wasn't really meant to be a shootout video. It's a review of the Lautens. I could have just not compared them to anything like most mic reviews do, but that always drives me nuts, so I compared them to what I had on hand to give people a better idea of what the mic can do. The reason I used the Shures instead of 421s is because I sold my 421s when I bought the Shures as I liked them a thousand times more than the 421s. As for the thumbnail, I wasn't thinking about it as "this vs this" (or I would have wrote VS in there) but more as "time to consider something new for your toms." If that's not coming across, well, my bad. I'll probably swap it out shortly. But if you're curious how the Lautens sound vs 421s, probably a LOT better as I always found 421 bleed to be pretty unbearable.

Had you just said something like "Oh, I was expecting a comparison with a 421 based on the thumbnail" I probably just would have said "Oh yeah, I can see how that could be misleading" and then change it 😊 You may have noticed that I did change the thumbnail after your first comment cause I'm not trying to misrepresent anything.

Strange note value playing drums. Loose like a guitar player or something. Bleed is what makes great records. Saturation rules.

Well, I'm a music producer, not a drummer sooooo... But as far as "bleed is what makes great records", that's such a general statement. Like yeah, some bleed is often times a good thing, but too much bleed or bad sounding bleed, not so much. These mics have really pleasant sounding bleed and not too much of it so that I totally can leave the tom mics open for some styles of music and let that bleed contribute to the sound. With 421s, the sound of the bleed drives me nuts, so I always want to dive straight to a gate to get rid of it.
