Last week on the EDHRECast, the guys tackled the commanders with the highest uniqueness scores according to their EDHREC pages. This week, they tackle the LEAST unique commanders, who seem to play all the same cards as everyone else. Which commanders are they, and how can they stand out even with nonunique cards? Ironic thing about color combinations: both Azorius and Rakdos are about restriction. Just Azor would say "No, you can't do that", Rakdos would say sarcasticslly "Yes, sure, you can do that. If you want to die"

Nice episode! I have a question: is there an inverse relation between commander uniqueness and deck uniqueness? Depala might be the only Boros deck that runs dwarves and vehicles, making her a very unique commander, but I assume that most Depala decks share a great many cards, since she's so linear. Have you ever investigated this?

St. Nicolaas they did talk about it in a previous episode (I think it’s Most Unique episode) but the gist is that most of the non-unique cards are have several different ways to take them while the more unique ones have some sort of singular path. Like you said, Depala has really only one way to take it. Ayula, Queen Among Bears is going to be Bear tribal, etc.

I'd argue Marchesa is not all about pillow fort and removal. They are within her colors, but removal and fort don't have to be her theme. Mine is a token/life gain build with no fort cards, using Monarch as a way to encourage battle. People's "tendency" to play her in certain way is ironically limiting an otherwise very versatile commander.

I think Nicol Bolas, The Ravager takes a hit to his uniqueness score because a lot of people *want* to do the Nicol Bolas-themed deck but can also just do it with the original, so even if you do that very Vorthos deck, you're still doing a lot of overlap.

I believe Lazav and Mirko are tied because both came in the Dimir Guild Kit so people upgraded their kits into commander decks but choosing different generals.

53:20 Atla Palani isn't that great with Mirari's Wake/Zendikar Resurgent. I prefer to run Regal Behemoth/Nyxbloom Ancient/Vorinclex. Stuff I can flip into.

I have mirri duelest in my ghired conclave deck and he is awesome. Imagine having 10+ creatures attacking and your opponent can only block with 1. And after that they can only attack with 1! It is a very good card. But you need some protection spells for it.

this is kinda late, but I think it would've been interesting to see when you compared multiple decks that had to the same uniqueness score, what the score is like between each other. You kinda touched on it in the mono green section, but an actual number associated with it would've been interesting. Idk if edhrec even has access to that particular information though

Anyone else notice that the cards picked for the multicolor combinations often correspond with the lore guild/shard/clan they represent? Azorius: Azor Dimir: Lazav/Mirko Vosk Orzhov: Teysa Izzet: Niv-Mizzer Golgari: Izoni Boros: Aurelia Simic: Zegana Esper: Sharuum Abzan: Anafenza Jeskai: Elesha Temur: Surrak I think this trend is because R&D was creating legendaries that exemplified what the color combination their guild/shard/clan represented wanted to do.

I'm surprised that Ayara doesn't have any unique cards. Certain cards it runs I never really see in other decks, like Plague of Vermin.

It's run in rat tribal, like 18% of Marrow-Gnawer decks.

I think Cryptic Caves is fine if you're playing a Korvold lands deck, which a lot of people are.

It seems like most of these Commanders have a very low deck count, very close to 100. That can be keeping down the variance since it’s keeping down the sample size. Also if people don’t build and play them a bunch, just packing them full of staples makes sense. Also sampling the top 100 cards could be overkill. I’d be interested to see the top 65, or average deck, that could give a tighter picture of the subject.

I'm considering building ulasht next. I want to make as many tokens as possible, draw a bunch of cards. Bounce stuff back to my hand to recast and draw more cards and make more tokens. Ulasht only has 115 decks and I think he might be really overlooked.

I've got a good one for challenge the stats, only 6% of karrthus, tyrant of jund runs death by dragons, which seems like a grouphug card but if you play it turn 6 then cast karrthus turn 7 you get 15/15 in body, pretty good if you ask me

First time watching/listening to the show, I enjoyed listening to all your thoughts but personally would have liked it more if you took your time a bit more. A lot of points and thoughts were kinda cut short because you had to move on quickly, and I feel it would have been better if you let the podcast go on a bit longer rather than making it seem rushed. If the time constraint is based on you guys and you have other work/things to do then I totally understand, I just wanted to give my opinion in case you're thought behind the speed was that everyone in the audience would prefer a quicker delivery. Overall nice podcast and some clean video editing!

Huh. Simic is my jam and my PS Zegana deck was super unique though shouldn’t be cause it was good and I think somewhat obvious. It was built around no max hand-size, “Maro creatures,” and flicker spells to have Zegana and my Maro creatures to double in size when Zegana comes back in play. The deck evolved through being lead by Kruphix with the same general shell and now to Pir & Toothy with only Psychosis Crawler and Empyrial Plate (Pir’s Armor) left over from the Maro cards. It’s way better now and both Zegana and Kruphix are in the 98. Anyway a bit surprised PS Zegana was least unique Simic deck.

That's surprising that Bruna would be the least unique. I actually run cards in Bruna you wouldn't consider for mono white lists because of her ability. Such as Mesmeric Orb and discard outlets like Thraben Standard Bearer and Key to the City. I have a few others. I'd think Lyra Dawnbringer would top that list. But hey, At least my Bruna is somewhat unique which is cool.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, but @10:20 I think you're suggesting Bruna benefits from being flickered. Her ability is on cast, not on ETB.

Hey guys, new to the podcast. I have a question that may have been answered before, but here goes: why do you guys not use the stats from TappedOut? I've been using it for years and recently found out that my decks are therefore not used in the stats.

We don't pull from TappedOut because we like to have an agreement with each website that we utilize, and we don't have such an agreement with TO.

@@guardianeifie no of untap effects and the massive mana I made with Selvala explorer returned and then proceeded to shuffle my grave into deck to force everyone to draw and loose from the vast protection and sheer speed that they didn't have enough mana to stop infinite mana turn 3 before I forced everyone to either mill or draw and I did it with 3 control decks that had plenty of removal and counterspells but I just played so much so fast they didn't get to counter or target anything after I put protective cards into play

749zen golgari has a lot of good value cards that show up in the majority of golgari decks. Tokens and graveyard are very common themes in golgari. Izoni is not the most optimal commander in golgari but it is not unique in what it does. You could probably run the same list with Jarad or meren or savra in the command zone and it would just be better.

@@jakeapplegate6642 Definitely couldn't run the same list Im running with those commanders. My Izoni has cards like helm of the host and conjurers closet that wouldn't make sense in other decks.

749zen are you trying say that helm of the host wouldn’t be good with meren or savra? Helm of the host is great in a ton of commander decks and doesn’t add to the uniqueness of any deck. Closet I agree with but idk if I would run it in izoni. I understand why you are running it but it seems a little win more. It assumes you have the set up already.

@@jakeapplegate6642 Um yeah atually I don't think helm of the host would be as good in Meren or Savra. Also didn't say I was going for uniqueness just that my list would run badly with those other mentioned commanders. Im aware Izoni is far from someone like Meren's power.... I'd put my Izoni deck against any Savra deck though.

C.J Hamblin idk, my torbran deck might be better if it was just goblin tribal or something, but as it stands it’s got a whole bunch of enchantments and creatures with pinging triggered abilities that red doesn’t run much in edh.

I have a mono red deck, I play Torbran in a sort of group burn deck. Really fun, trying to work out the lack of card draw which hurts the momentum of the deck

So if all six of the black commanders were tied for a uniqueness score of 0 doesn’t that mean all the decks are the same? So...couldn’t i decide one day to play my razaketh deck and then the next play my erebos deck without having two separate decks

Not necessarily. The decks can be entirely different, it's just that the cards they run are super common among other commanders

I actually think selesnya has commanders a little less interesting than boros even. Other than being very good with combat or synergizing with tokens, very few are quite unique. I think the most interesting gw commanders are probably karametra and selvala, focusing on hybrid landfall/ creature bouncing and politics respectively.

Orzhov is my jam. I'm sure ppl will say that's bland in some ways sure, but I have 3 orzhov decks. Athreos, which is rat tribal. Karlov, who is lifegain, and Ayli, who is a cheap death touch creature for orzhov superfriends

Imagine if you had to sell your collection to survive today. It's really sad to see you pedaling a card kingdoms buy list. Unless they are increasing the amount of money people will get for cards. most sites offer less money if you trade-in for cash than trading in for cash. So you are telling people to lose money to a store in a time of need, then the store turns around and sell those cards for 30-70% more than they paid out.
