This is relevant to the thing I'm creating now! Someone asked for a set of leather handcuffs. I don't ask questions, I make things. Am adding a thinner strap to the top of the wider strap but FML the stitch holes are a pain. Next task to tackle will be affixing rabbit fur to the inside

That was good Chuck. I haven't thought about leaving long ends of thread through the needle to feed out later. I see it makes it easier starting out. I will try that.

Hey, chuck, I'm making a belt right now, and one issue I'm having is the thread is constantly getting twisted and wrapped around stuff. Any tips, maybe a leather element idea, for keeping long lengths of thread straight and tidy?

Thanks Chuck, great video. Could you explain the suede glue up on a cut out in the next live please? Is the glue just on the back of the dyed leather? How do you apply it without the glue leaking through the holes? Paint roller?

GREAT videos on belt making! Thank you. Got me excited to make some belts. One question. Say I wanted to cut 1 ¼" letters into a 1 ¾" belt blank so the lettering shows with a contrasting color liner. The measurements are extreme, it'd probably be 1" letters I an 1 ½" blank. Would I need to sew around each letter?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, Ideally, yes, you would want to stitch around the letters or use a very strong adhesive if that isn't feasible.

Great series so far. Does the weight of the leather (or combined layers) change anything in sizing of the belt? That is, if you go with a heavy weight leather, you have to make the belt longer?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Going up an one or two ounces, will change the length but not by much, it’s so little I don’t really account for it. I may add ½” if I’m going with a 10/11 oz. or heavier. Hope that helps!

[ReTyredAl] I am enjoying your videos and have a question: In all of my years wearing a belt, I've only had one last more than 1 year. When I was working, sweating and getting wet - stretching was the issue. water proofing Some belts, especially two layer belt broke thru at the eye. The one belt that did last nearly 3 years was from a small shop in Du Bois Wyoming. it was in expensive at around $25, No treatment that I could detect, but one tough SOB. Any ideas as to why and if I could duplicate the process at home? Thank you! PS I am a big guy.
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alfred, Leather will naturally form to the shape it is stretched to - especially worn day after day. The best thing I can tell you is to make a heavy (in thickness) belt, this will be stronger and won't stretch as easily. I would say go at least 12/13 oz. or heavier. It will be rigid, but sturdy and should last a long time!

Any reason you couldn't or shouldn't dye the flesh side of the natural vegtan liner instead of using an additional drop-in liner piece like the suede?

How did you measure the inside of the English point chisel for the taper?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, If you measure from the point to the edge of the punch and divide by 3, my mark is two-thirds of that measurement from the edge in towards the point. We'll see if Chuck can talk more about this in an upcoming video or one of his lives.

I use 11oz to 13oz Herman Oak skirting sides and it averages 3/16ths inch thick for heavily carved and tooled belts and a strap cutter isn't very good for cutting it as it is easy to get off with that thickness. Why do I use such heavy leather? I do not want to have to sew a liner on by hand as I cannot afford a $1000 sewing machine.
