In this weeks episode of The Leather Element, we answer a question from Nolan regarding snaps. There are three main types of closure snaps; Line 24, Line 20 and Segma snaps. Chuck demonstrates how to set each one of these as well as what weight leather is recommended for each one. We hope this answers some of your questions and makes setting snaps a breeze!

Thanks for the guidance. I'll be sure to keep a copy at hand and work to avoid ruboff. Sweat from hard work causes the most problem, so I may change to nylon belt for those times, mowing, digging etc. Much appreciate your suggestions and look forward to more videos. Great info. Cheers.

I finally found some line 24 snaps with a decent length post! (On ebay, not the leather supply shops I generally use) now all of a sudden they are easy to use, no more having to shave the back of the leather to ensure enough bite occurs when setting them!

Love all your videos! They’re great! I would say some close up shots of what you are working on would be awesome. Also, slow down a bit lol It’s not a race lol Yes that will make the video longer but it would help us the viewer understand better. If you think the video is too long make it a two part or series of 3 or more. I for one would watch a series by you and I’m certain most others would as well. You could also make two separate videos through the editing process. One that’s less than 10 minutes and the other that is either 20 minutes long or is a 2 part video Thank you for making The Leather Element videos, because of those videos I’ve actually been able to learn leather craft and now make exquisite pieces. That fixes my old El Paso costume leather shoulder holster for a 4 inch Colt Python. The snaps came off the speedloader pouches. That holster is about 35 years old and still in great condition, as opposed to that mass produced junk made my Galco. I am making Steve McQueen Bullitt style upside down holsters now. Safari and everyone else quit making those holsters back in 1980. I love that holster design! It is reliable, trustworthy, safe, and super comfortable. Lesson learned about crappy eBay snaps. No more no name Asian made garbage snaps!

I've learned on line 20/24, if you post is crushing (I have a Barry king setter and arbor press for both) take a countersink drill bit and run it in reverse to start the bell. Works great everytime. Now segma snaps one side always crushes and I've yet to get the hang of them.

THAnKS so much for this video! I have spent about 2 hours trying to figure out how to put a snap in a small keychain! I was on the verge of just giving up! After watching your video there might just be some hope for me and snaps! I made the mistake of purchasing EXPENSIVE snaps at a hobby store - that is probably what has caused me so much frustration. Oh snap! You can also use the flat side of the anvil on the male side of the line 20/24 snaps if you don’t have the granite slab. The same goes for the sigma snap anvil too.

Love your informative videos -thank you for them. I am trying to put a snap on a piece of heavy leather (an axe sheath that gets a rough workout in the back of a pickup) The strap is slightly lighter leather and is no problem. But when I've punched my hole in the heavy leather, the post barely protrudes through and into the snap - not nearly enough to set it. The post measures about 3/8"in. and is the standard Line 20 post. I've tried to buy longer posts - maybe a 1/2" from both Weaver and your competition, but no luck - no-one seems to sell longer posts. How would you solve my problem? Thanks.

I've always been taught to turn the post around in a circle and do many, many soft blows. Whenever I try to do the two or three hard blows, the snap post always curls crooked, ruining the snaps. I've actually done a dozen project without snaps to avoid using them. I wish I had the money for a snap setter (the pull down, perfect snap every time kind).

I have found that if you are having trouble setting the line 20-24 use a Philips screw drive first. Place the screw driver on the post and give it a light tap. this will flair out the post and finish with the setter, this will set the post with a rolled star holding the snap.

More questions: Can I use a line 24 snap on thin leather if I shorten the posts? Grind them down. I like the very wide cap for design reasons. No one makes a short post line 24 snap (that I have found). If it is ok, how much of the post has to extend through the male and female pieces? Like double capped rivets? I will try it on some scrap leather to see if it works.

I have a leather wallet that was given to me in 1978. Very durable. I've purchased several other wallets over the years but I always come back to this one. After 40+ years one of the caps came loose from the base. I bought a pack of snaps at a discount store and can't get them to stay installed. No idea what size they are. Doesn't say anything on the package re size. If I bought 24's and the originals are 20's, are they interchangeable?

Hi Chuck . Would it be possible for you to do a video on attaching the Belt tip on the end of the belt by riveting. I have a belt tip with Three prongs on it which I know , I have to put the three holes in the end of the belt so the "prongs" go through the belt end and the rivets on the end of the prongs attach over the 3 prongs , But !! I`m not sure of the procedure with the Green or the Blue Machine how it's done , (Probably because I`ve never seen anyone attach it this way ). 😁I would be very grateful if you Can you could just demonstrate the procedure how it's done please then there`s no mistakes.

I want a good HAND press for setting snaps. The hammer and anvil works, but I can’t get them set evenly. The presses are so expensive. So I’m looking for a hand press that works well. Suggestions?

Why isnt there copper snaps to go with copper rivets you may be using say on a knife sheath. Im thinking maybe because its too soft? Has to be plated? I really dont know. Ive only found antiqued copper which is prolly not copper at all. Id like to match all the furniture.

Thanks. Very useful information. I've seen people just flatten snaps with a hammer and get frustrated when they ruined their project. Just have to get the right tools. I'm frustrated and hesitant making belts and straps for friends, only to find out their clothing is ruined from dye running on to them. I' ve no clue as to what I should coat my leather to prevent it from running. Could you please refer me to a past video or just tell me what to use? I'm only using black or brown oil dye. Cheers.

This is a tough one that we all deal with. You’ve got the right dye going so I can only suggest two or three things that will help. I keep a lightly oiled cotton rag (Neatsfoot) in my shop (in a baggy so it doesn’t evaporate) and, once my project is dyed and dry, I’ll rub down the entire project, front sides and back. The light oil in the rag is enough to get a bit of oil in the leather, but, not enough to where it spots. Also, rubbing down with the oil cloth is more cleaning than oiling so pay a little extra attention to the edges and flesh side (back). Once dry there (almost immediate) use a good top coat on the top grain, edges and back, and, while rubbing or buffing this in, you’re cleaning a bit more. This will knock out about 99% of the rub-off. Unfortunately, we all sweat, it rains, there’s humid days and whatever goes in the leather will come out and dark brown, or black, is the worst, but, run a rag down the edges and across the back after the above is done and I think you’ll be surprised. I hope this helps!

Your tutorials are very helpful. Thank you. Is it possible to set a snap using a screwdriver? If so, which type screwdriver do I use? I don't have time to go get a snap setter so I need to work in a pinch. :-)

Hi there, I've never tried a screwdriver but I would imagine a phillips head would work best because you want it to splay the post and then you'll want to roll the edges to securely fasten it. Not sure if that will work though but it's worth a try in a pinch.

I would replace the brass with nickel, you’re likely having an issue with residual chrome salts from the tanning process. The nickel may corrode too, but that’s where I would start.

Is there a significant difference in strength and longevity between the Line 20 and 24? Or is it more a personal preference in look and size?

Hi Michael, The Line 24 snaps are bigger and stronger - the actual cap of the snap is larger on the 24 so they are great for heavy-duty items like belts. The line 20 are great quality as well just not quite as strong and the snap is smaller.

My posts usually collapse off center, I’ve only had a few pull apart, and a couple I was able to reset (with the same parts) and they’re still holding. I recently replaced the snaps on a combination lighter/knife pouch for my neighbour (yes I spelled it with the U as I’m Canadian, lol). I added an extra top set as he alternated between two different knives in it, and the taller set was too tall for the shorter knife. To get to my question, my line 24, and line 20 snaps were to big for the existing hardware to mate to. What other sizes of snaps are there?

Off topic, How do you sharpen a round knife. I purchased an Al Stolman round knife and it arrived dull. I’m done with Tandy.

Hi there, If the knife is really dull you may want to take it to a professional to get sharpened. If it just needs to be polished up then the easiest way to sharpen a round knife is to take a scrap piece of leather and put some jewelers rouge or a honing compound on the rough side of the leather and run the knife edge across the compound to remove any burrs and polish the edge. Jady Fairless, Weaver and Tandy/Craftool both have a setter press with interchangeable setter dies. If you’re doing a lot of snaps, it’s worth the investment. The Tandy one is less expensive and still a really good quality. I’ve been using my Tandy/Craftool press for over 20 years.

Can you re-dye leather a different color and if so how?

Hi Keith, You can, depending on what you are looking at. You'll need to remove any top coat from the product you are re-dyeing by using a deglazer first, then you can dye the product and add a top coat. Just note that if the product is a dark color, you won't be able to lighten it- you can add more color but you can't take color away or lighten it. Hope this helps!

my snaps keep ending up crooked, any way to avoid this?

Hi there, make sure you're using the correct setter and that the post of the snap isn't more than about 1/8" longer than the material it's going through. If the snap post is too long, they tend to set crooked. Hope that helps!

How does one know when to use what size, and what type?

Hi Cheryl, It depends mostly on the strength you need. Something heavy duty will need the line 24 snaps because those are the strongest, next would be the line 20 and then for small items and items using thinner weight leather, you would use the segma snaps. The length of the post depends on the thickness of your leather, the snap post will need to be 1/16" - 1/8" longer that the thickness of he leather layers it is going through. Hope that helps!

@@WeaverLeatherSupply Here's the project I thought up. I have a bag of remnent strips I have already used for a project ( my second thing I've made since beginning leathercraft) that I thought maybe I could skive down and make work? (See pics) I'm just trying to fiqure out what all I need to make it happen.
