Great job as always Chuck! It’s always important to hear it doesn’t have to be perfect as long as you’re enjoying yourself and like the outcome. That definitely keeps me coming back. I usually say “is it the best piece ever? No, but it’s the best I’ve done so far and I learned from it. My next piece will be even better.” Your videos have helped me jump in and explore all kinds of tooling and sewing I never thought I’d be doing in my first year. So keep up the great work! Leather is such a fun hobby.

Great Video Chuck. I just wanted to say that you shouldn't listen to those guys that tell you not to say (NICE) with gusto. As I'm sure you know. These days you can't please everybody, there's people out there now that cannot endure sound doctrine! They can't stand sound doctrine. Please don't change your videos, since just about everybody I talk to really likes them. They're "NICE"!

Hey Chuck, Great video. I love Celtic Knots, and I do alot of them on my hat boxes, and Shrine Fez Cases I make. Matter of fact I have shown you some of them at the Tandy Store in Atlanta if you remember.

Tip and trick. We always over cut our pieces and cut to size later. I use packing tape or lately I found clear shelve covering is much easier and faster to put on the back so it minimizes stretching when tooling. I overlay the tracing film and get it where I want it on the piece I'm tooling and punch a hole through both in an area that will be cut off later and put a Chicago screw in. Easy to rotate out of the way and back again. If you run into trouble doing tooling just rotate it back in place, or remount it with the Chicago screw.

Good philosophy, if you've enjoyed making it then the hobby has done it's job. Also you might know there's a ding in it but someone else ,unless you tell them , probably wouldn't see it . Also if it was perfect it would look like it was made by a machine.

Chuck, many thanks for this video and all the teaching you share. You really are an essential resource for anyone learning or working with leather. In regards the Celtic Knot lesson, what if your inside spaces, the area between the bands, are small enough that getting in a backgrounder, even a three spot bar grounder, can't be done cleanly? Do we let it stand and cover it with paint or what? Also, could you do this lesson again sometime but show us inverse beveling of the bands? Best to you and THANKS AGAIN!!!

Hi Chuck, OLD LEATHER SMITH here, I tech my students 2 ways 2 tool, First way using what you showed, Second just using a SPOON, which there R a few shapes, and as I said it's not perfect but I can take it far as I want, I do 3d carving using a few spoons, when I show my students a light goes off, GOD'S BLESSINGS CHUCK ✝️⚾🙃

Great video as always Brother, I'm currently looking at getting an airbrush to improve my leather dyeing as evey thing I make, I dye myself. I'm new to leather crafting, but long time viewer. I bought some of those leather kits that has all you need to do project ( precut holes , pattern, cords, ext...) Could do a video on how to take these kinds of let's to the next step. I know in one of you other videos, that you didn't like those kit. I just didn't want to throw them away. Thx

Thank you for your videos. I was walking around a local craft store to just replace my old key chain leather piece. Then I found this wonderful world of leather craft. I've learned so much through your videos. I don't know if you covered this topic. But can you share your insights when you first have a piece of leather in your hands? I'm planning on buying my first piece of leather from Weaver in about a week. I don't even know the proper way of storing leather. Thank you!

Nice simple design chuck. The thing with celtic knotwork is to not make it perfect. Show the slight wavy lines or blemeishes, that way when you antique it it will come to life, be more realistic and look like its handmade and not just a giant stamp!

If you want expertise, there are plenty of Reddit threads of all manner of crafts/projects where actual lawyers respond with detailed analysis for particular situations. The extremely simplified, often legally not correct advice is it's almost always a grey area. Mainly it comes down to two things: the company (size, reputation and history) and the feasability (would they profit from the court case, how often are they copied off of, will they lose fans). For example, Disney is financially big enough they shouldn't care but their reputation is already lacking and their history shows they will come after even very miniscule cases such as sueing a pre-school for painting Disney characters on it's walls. Nintendo usually only reacts if their stuff is shown in a way they don't like because unofficial Pokémon merchandise is just too widespread to handle, but they will sometimes take heavy reputation hits like with Smosh's classic Pokémon theme parody.

How much can I expect to spend on leather the first time I try to do something including practice? What kind of leather should I get to practice on so I can get the feel of using the tools?

Veg tanned leather is the way to go. Price depends on the size of the leather. You can buy smaller pieces to practice on.

Why do you have to use a swivel knife? Will a razor knife or exacto knife be easier to control? Seems like a difficult tool to master. Thanks

A swivel knife will cut a “V” shaped cut so you can bevel or shade. They’re not terribly difficult to use and you can get the hang of one pretty quickly, but it does take practice. It’s a necessity if you want to tool! Thank you

Oh Snap! Was hoping you would do a beginner tutorial on leather carving/tooling (was going to make a request). Some questions---cutting with the swivel knife, it looks like you have the blade at a slight angle so you are cutting with one of the tips? Secondly was curious about how long did it take for you to bevel the entire knot?

I have a question about this. I am wanting to make my own leather sporrans, but I am wanting to mold the leather to form the body of the sporran. Would I do the tooling and carving before or after the body has been molded?

In a prior video he says to tool it first. The design may soften a little, but he's had no issues with it.

@@Freeman-Dl70 ok, Im going to have to skip the tooling and just go with plain sporrans then. When forming the leather over a mold the leather changes shape. If it is tooled first it will distort the design as it is stretched over the mold.

I few months ago I purchased some leather off of Amazon. I was disappointed with the quality of the leather. It wouldn't hold any stamp no matter how firm I hammered the stamp. Where can I find good leather?

Springfield Leather Co. has Herman Oak, and somewhat less expensive than Weaver ( Their tools are good quality and a better price. ). Wicket and Craig are are good also SLC has bags of scrap you can experiment with for cheep. Hope this helps!

Hello Chuck: My comment, and maybe this is unimportant? You never showed how to bevel the interior lines, and that's always the most confusing part of beveling for me. Especially with flowers and leaves. Thanks: Dave
