John Wayne was a hero to my dads generation. They all had an appreciation for the price those that went before them paid so they could have this great country. My father fought in WWII and experienced the depression as a child. His patriotism grew out of his gratitude and John Wayne exemplified that America.

This was a John Wayne quote from a CNN article "I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility," the actor said. "I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people." To categorize all black peoples in such a way would be considered a racist viewpoint in most eyes. I would refer to that as a character flaw.
@mr.x6313
@mr.x6313 3 жыл бұрын
@@550n440 I don’t think Wayne’s thinking is flawed. He’s basically saying he does not believe in affirmative action: handing out positions of authority to people who aren’t trained or educated to take on those responsibilities. Perhaps he could have worded it more delicately, but that’s simply not Wayne’s way.

When they were making The Cowboys in 1972, The producers of that movie we’re left-leaning and despised Wayne as per the dictates of the culture. Then the Duke knocked on their door, and very politely, respectfully and with great humility asked if they would consider putting him in their movie. He earned their respect. They were so awed and humbled by him all their prejudices vanished. This is on the dvd special features. The Cowboys is one of my favorite John Wayne movies.

THE SEARCHERS is cringey to me. I understand its importance, and I can see the seeds of TAXI DRIVER and STAR WARS within it. But let's face it: John Ford was more of a storyteller and a mythmaker than a true artist. He certainly wasn't, say, a Christopher Nolan. Even his fans admit that there are many boring, embarrassing, or just plain irrelevant passages in his movies you have to sit through in order to get to the good stuff - and sometimes it hardly seems worth it.

For me one of the most powerful John Wayne films was The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. In it Wayne plays a man who sacrificed his chance of love and happiness because of the love he had for Hallie. Here was total self sacrifice which would only bring him sorrow but he did it anyway. A beautiful film and a great message of what it means to be a man.

@cowcocky, Also, Wayne was killing himself symbolically. He and Marvin were the opposite sides of the same coin. When Wayne killed Marvin, he was destroying himself and the old West that he and Liberty dominated for so long. Stewart was the new West, tamed and civilized. Wayne and Marvin had no place there. Liberty was assassinated by Donovan. Donovan drank himself to death. The end of the Old West. (This was the last western that Wayne and director John Ford ever made together. Many film historians believe that Ford planned it that way; Ford's swan song, so to speak).

Thanks for your tribute of John Wayne. He personified the spirit of America. Ready, willing and able. His non apologetic love for America led him to stand up and against the Leftist radicals at Harvard. Tell you a true story about John Wayne. An employee from Range resources was fracking on my friend's property. In my friend's barn was a life size cardboard cut of the Duke. The man from Range resources said he wanted to tell us a story about Wayne and his brother. He said his brother was in the Navy and was swimming in the ocean when a rip tide carried him far out un the ocean. He was screaming for help. when out of nowhere a motor boat pulls up beside him. A large hand sweeps thru the water grabbing his brother and pulling him aboard. The large hand belonged to none other than John Wayne. He took the navy man in and they enjoyed some strong drink that afternoon.

John Wayne was a far better actor than given credit for. There's a flashback scene from the Quiet Man where he's in the boxing ring and realizes the man he's just knocked down is dead. The look on Wayne's face said it all, without a word of dialogue you knew exactly what was going on inside the character's head.

It was not a once-in-a-century storm. There was a more severe cold front in December, 1989. It caused no power outages other than downed power lines and broken pipes in attics. The difference was that our electric power came from coal and nuclear. Gas heated the homes. The gas lines could be kept warm by reliable electricity.

(for my family at least) John Wayne will always be the greatest example of manhood ever set forth on screen, and just like all great men it would be foolish to allow the fallibility of his humanity to obfuscate the great message he was chosen to share. While it's a fact that "..all men fall short of the glory of God"... it does not mean that God doesn't use these flawed people to bring light into the world. Thanks again Andrew, and may John Wayne's message of manliness continue to be a shining example that inspires families for generations to come.

Kind of chokes me up in different ways; We live in a time that everything offends certain people and must be erased, cut out historical events because they were wrong (instead of remembering and learning from mistakes). John Wayne spoke his mind and that has no place in the current time, so that means so does my Father; He was a "Vaquero" at 15 on _his_ Fathers ranch in Honduras, he was the "Blacksheep" of the family, and we butted heads from my Teens on, because I too became the blacksheep. But he had the typical story, he wanted to come to the nation of "Rock 'n Roll, Elvis and John Wayne", his father wouldn't help, so with a few dollars in his hand came to California around the age of 20 (his girlfriend soon followed, who became my Mother). He tried to become a Marine twice (1959 and 1961) to become an auotomatic citizen, but he had "flat feet". I was born in 1963, and my parents became PROUD U.S. citizens in 65. I was the 1st in my entire family to be born in the U.S., that means a lot to me. My father had said to me a few times; "Son, you are _privaleged_ to live in a country that, you can be anything you want to be, with hard work". My Papa' was a HARD man, we were so different, but in many ways so alike, but he had these moments of compassion, humilty, and empathy. He was polite to everyone, but he had strong opinions as well, but he knew when and where to speak his mind. He died in 2006, but he and Wayne live-on, everytime I watch various Wayne movies and Westerns (and my Papa's taste for Rock & guitars, that led me to "distorted"/overdriven guitars and a love of music). Fave John Wayne movies (*seen in the cinema): Chisum True Grit* The Comancheros Hatari The Man that shot Liberty Vallance Rio Lobo* Big Jake* El Dorado The Searchers The Cowboys* The Quiet Man Will have to watch again; Fort Apache, Rio Grande and She wore a Yellow Ribbon.

And also the fact he dodged the draft in order to sleep with a married woman whilst strutting around acting like a tough guy. There’s a reason marines booed him off a stage in Hawaii in 1945. I trust the judgement of combat veterans more than I do the whimsical daydreaming of historians who write with rose colored glasses about how great every aspect of the past was. Even my respect for Reagan has lessened over the years considering his imposition of the 21 national legal limit, the importation of Cocain to fund the Cold War, and how willing he was to pass laws that limited the second amendment (Hughes amendment to the GRA of 1986). If you want better heroes of Hollywood, I point to Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable, and Audie Murphy. Though Murphy didn’t become a star until after the war, he demonstrated the same amount of patriotism and desire to serve as Gable and Stewart. Gable was a flight engineer for B24s in Italy, and Stewart was a B17 pilot in England and both flew combat missions where they indeed faced enemy fire. All this time Wayne was back in the states living a comfortable life making BS propaganda films and doing tours for warbond drives. Wayne is a macho man in appearances only, gable and Stewart were and remained humble in both private and public life.

Just before he died, he converted to Roman Catholicism. So when I talk about him to my sister Betty (his biggest fan) I call him "Saint John Wayne!"

"Have we forgotten the lessons of the ancient wars?" - Jim Morrison (The Native Americans were an honest & dignified people who, in good faith, ceded battleline after battleline hoping to appease their enemy oppressors - only to be bo be boxd into a near extinction & a cultural obsolescence, perhaps, more horrifying than mere death.) "'Indian, Indian, what did you die for?' Indian says, 'Nothing at all...'" 'Newborn Awakening' 🎶

Three of my favorite "golden screen" actors (older, not newer) of all time are John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Gregory Peck. Stalwart All-Americans and great actors I can identify with. Some 'more modern' actors that I have also liked a lot, who personify toughness and masculinity and are capable of high body counts and doing a lot of people in are Chuck Norris, Charles Bronson...and even Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme... Not that the aforementioned 4 actors are great actors per se, but I love seeing them 'kick arse' and beating the hell out of many bad guys....

Couldn’t agree with you more on the deeper truth. Better watch out though, there are loads of people out there who will pretend they will never lie... even if it meant saving a loved one. Of course they’re lying to themselves and everyone around them but for some reason they can’t see it... guess they’re just too busy virtue signalling 🤔

I don’t think Wayne’s thinking is flawed. He’s basically saying he does not believe in affirmative action: handing out positions of authority to people who aren’t trained or educated to take on those responsibilities. Perhaps he could have worded it more delicately, but that’s simply not Wayne’s way.

Own every one of his films, on tape and disk. Purchase, not pirate. Watch them regularly. Stagecoach, Rio Lobo, Rio Bravo and War Wagon are in the most viewed. The Cowboys is an Incredible Film, class of its own. So Many others. Talk about the other crapola if you want, The Duke made great films.

lessons from John Wayne about work ethic and earning what you work hard for. and taking pride in your ability to do a job the best you can. and that getting paid for doing a good job is nothing more than a trade between two people. "Gave? Boy, you've got it all wrong. I don't give jobs I hire men... And for that I'll pay you a fair day's wage. You won't give me anything and I won't give you anything. We both hold up our heads."

To be honest though, there's no way John Wayne could have held his own against Victor McLaglan in a fistfight.
