the opening of season 2 was sooo brutally profound to me. i was stunned by this revelation about the opening. humans have been here on earth for so long and so wide spread that no matter where you are standing, something unbelievably sad and something soul souringly joyous has happened rite there. just imagine it....everywhere!

HBO has to be applauded for this first episode of the 2nd season of The Leftovers. It is a risky venture to spend a significant amount of time of an episode painting a picture, through the footage of the cavewoman, that is rich in symbolism, but which is not directly connected with our characters. Few shows would think so highly of their audience's attention span, and their ability to read between the lines, to spend so much time on such a scene.

Arguably the best episode of the show. And after reading some interviews with the people making the show, it is now clear to me that every single shot in this episode has a specific purpose. Like the daily routines of the people are being repeated because they think if they change anything, then they'll trigger the departure. And the opening was to parallel events in the show, and to show us that these earthquakes have been happening for a very long time and are not a recent phenomenon (and may have nothing to do with the departure events). The townsfolk may just be inventing cause and effect in order to explain the unexplainable. Much like how in Game of Thrones, the prophecies may only be "real" because people want them to be so they do whatever it takes to make them happen.

+GeekFurious Yes... I love this because what if the burning of the house was something that John did in the past and he always has to follow up on that because of the routine... and that could explain the 2 and 5 numbers... John was pissed at his reading so he said, "Nope I will burn this house for good this time" (maybe their routine is causing minor fires) yes... lol

I was left quite mystified by this. I felt mystified by the first season but I thought the understanding I gained through it would carry me into season 2 but no, it's even more confusing now.

This show is the perfect example to why you cannot just simply watch the first 2-3 episodes of a show and give up. Some shows can take up to 5-6 episodes of context and information before it can get going to showing you the entire world. TV watchers have become too damn impatient lately. They want BOOM BOOM BOOM right away. I'm glad I stuck with The Leftovers.

I recognize a fewTexas landmarks in this first episode. Jarden appears to be mostly Lockhart, Texas; you can see a sign for Black's Barbecue behind John's son as he walks to the town square. The Caldwell County Courthouse is also featured prominently in the background. As for the spring / lake / swimming hole, that is Pedernales Falls State Park, about 65 miles NW of Lockhart.

I also enjoyed the first season, but I wasn't sold until the end basically. The first episode of the second season has me hooked immediately. I don't think this new family is going to be our main cast, I think this was just to introduce them. Justin Theroux still features prominently in the credits, it would be weird if he was relegated to a recurring role.

That intro makes sense now. Thank you. I got to this show 8 yrs too late. I was too concerned with grabbing my remote to make sure i was on the right show, and why i was watching cavewomen, and what cavewomen had to do with this show. 😆 But that bird in the sky looked too much like an eagle to me. So i also wondered if this even WAS cavewomen... So many questions running through my mind, that I missed how they were trying to connect things.

Season 2 Episode 1 was excellent. I have rarely seen a good/great show start a new season with totally new characters and be as good as the previous season. By the end of S2E1, I was as into the show as the first season and first season characters only played bit parts. Bravo.

I hated last season up to the last episode and I'm back again this season. I was so confused during the credits and first 10 minutes of the show; I thought I was watching a different show. I love that they completely revamped the show. Last season felt like a daunting task to watch because it was so depressing and they never let up. I am intrigued and looking forward to see where they will take us. Great start so far.

I think it is clear those three girls disappeared BUT I predict she will come back at the end because she has that line after the epilepsy something like, "I go sometimes but come back" I can't remember exactly... Good stuff.

In the very first of Season 2 when the native American women dies, do you think (SPOILER ALERT) with the three girls vanishing (supposedly thus far), where the very same car is parked sort of seems to be in the same exact spot as the women died some 10,000 odd years ago

I think the pre-historic woman couldn't have been more than 12,000 years ago because this takes place in America and dated remains of humans discovered thus far haven't been dated before that.
@BrendanBeckett
@BrendanBeckett 8 жыл бұрын
+ObserversEyes Ethnically they did not look to be Native American though. The main woman looked southern European and the second that found her dead looked African. How could that be in Texas 12,000 years ago?

Brendan Beckett What's interesting in that you mention that, when I first saw that portion of the show, I thought the pregnant woman was the same woman that Kevin was fucking when she disappeared. But then that's science fiction and part of the show, not historical.

@el80ne
@el80ne 8 жыл бұрын
+bioman123 What made you think they weren't advanced? Just because they slept in a cave? I don't think much can be gleaned from cave dwelling as to how advanced they were. That was a common of primitive humans.
@bioman123
@bioman123 8 жыл бұрын
+el80ne They were covered in dirt, sleeping on the ground, no clothes, no tools/structures or anything visible, the fire pit was merely a circle of rocks. I guess they could have just stopped there to rest after a long trek or something but it looked like the classic "caveman" trope rather than a plausible depiction of early americans.

Ahh, the moment Ben mentioned 'Damon Lindelhoff' I remembered why I didn!t watch this. That guy just ... he can write a great middle to a story, just don't ket him touch the beginning or the end. And I really don't support Ben's interest in 'Ray Donovan,' the first season was interesting if inflated, and the second season became grotesque. (I'm irritated when Ben likes things I don't because he has such a great ability to sell me on things otherwise and find the words that capture some of my own feelings).

+Gangrel Aussie you didn't watch this but you know it's not good? WHY ARE YOU HERE?
@KainErrow
@KainErrow 8 жыл бұрын
GeekFurious Because sometimes you can get good recommendations for things to watch from episode recaps & reviews. And I don't mean to be contemptuous of people that did watch and enjoy the show, I just really dislike Lindelhoff from the experience I've had with his writing's impact on story. I seem to recall (now) that a reviewer had suggested this particuoar type of story (where it's all questions and no answers) was right up his alley, but I just feel that most stories need some level of answer, even if it is a bit vague or ambiguous.
@GeekFurious

Gangrel Aussie I think the man is a genius. He has a great track record as a show runner. LOST answered all the questions I needed answered. Though, I did think it added a useless story line in the final season (sideways timeline) but otherwise, loved it.

@MIchelle4reel
@MIchelle4reel 8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Randella The only person that is super religious in the family is the son. Everyone else is superstitious and engaging in ritualistic acts everyday to keep the departures away. Burying birds, running naked in the woods, and slaughtering goats. The dad didn't even want to go to church and I think there is some tension between he and his dad for that reason.
@joerandella2526

MIchelle4reel Oh okay then maybe they aren't "Super religious", but i still don't like that family in general really. I'm hoping we get to see alot more of the Garvey family than theirs, but I'm sure the black family are still going to be very interesting.

Hi, Calvin. Wow a comment I made almost 2 years ago. A nice blast from the past nonetheless. I have finished the series just 2 weeks ago and it was definitely worth watching. Season 3 was perhaps the best season of the show. The ending to the series was not what I expected but depending on whether you choose to believe Nora (WHO WILL BECOME AN IMPORTANT CHARACTER IN THE FINAL SEASON) or whether you choose to believe that she is lying, the ending was satisfying. If you do get to finish the season/series let me know.
