Queen Elizabeth II, the world’s longest-serving monarch, whose reign of almost seven decades survived tectonic shifts in Britain’s post-imperial society, inspired broad affection for her among her subjects and weathered successive challenges posed by the romantic choices, missteps and imbroglios of her descendants, died on Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, her summer retreat. She was 96. She left behind a legacy that blended the ancient and the modern with the help of mass media.

I think the way to sum up the Queen's legacy is like this: when a foreign leader visited the UK on an official visit The Queen was still the most important person in the country and when The Queen visited a foreign country on an official visit she was still the most important person in that country!

Yup, I have to be polite. Millions of people in my country were massacred directly or indirectly due to British monarchy and British imperialism, but I still have to be polite. My country was reduced to begging and still I have to be polite. Treasures from my country has been "looted" and being used as personal jewellery for the Queen, and still I have to be polite. Best summation of the Queen's legacy yet.. Acknowledgement over her miss-steps in the aftermath of Diana's death, but an accurate portrayal of her generally excellent instincts as a constitutional monarch - not flawless, but excellent! Watching the BBC, ITV & Sky has been akin to watching propaganda.. Its important to remember things accurately.. She was a fantastic monarch but she was also human and someone who made mistakes. Granted her mistake were rarer than most and given her status, they were impressively seldom, but they DID happen and so we should remember them..

I don't remember a public outpouring of sympathy for Prince Philip. I remember a lot of people getting very annoyed that his death basically shut down British politics and media for two weeks despite the fact that he was neither as important nor anywhere near as well liked as the queen.
