Partial transcript
What you are watching is the sport of Keirin! Literally translated, Keirin means “racing cycle.” Invented in Japan in the early 20th Century, Keirin is a variation of traditional Track Cycle Racing, that tests the ability of cyclists on a 1.5 kilometer course at various speeds behind a motorized pace cycle, which by the final lap leaves the track allowing racers to reach full speed. Prize money is offered to the top racers in each competition. The money is tallied up over the course of a season. That amount determines a racer’s ranking, while the top earner is given the title of “King.” The sport became popularized nationwide in 1948, when the Japanese government legalized gambling racing sports, which also included horse, speedboat and motorcycle racing. Other sport betting is illegal. Casinos and other games are chance are also forbidden.
With the boost in popularity, Keirin developed formalized rules and a proper league in the 1950s. Today the sport pulls in an average of 5 million spectators to live events each year, with 600 billion yen in bets places annually. That’s about $5 Billion US. The sport was not too well known outside of Japan until the Year 2000, when Keirin style cycling was included in the Olympics for the first time, and has been featured in every successive Olympiad.
On November 18, 1994, Koichi Nakano’s Kanshuu Keirin-O was released for the Super Famicom by Coconuts Japan. Kanshuu means supervised by and Keirin-O means simply Keirin King, as each top prize money earner was referred to as “King.” So let’s pop this game into the ol’ Super Famicom and see how it goes!
Well… this is not the kind of game you’d expect. Yes is a Keirin game, a Keirin training simulator! Since no one in 1994 outside of Japan knew or cared about Keirin, I’d place this game ahead of every RPG on the “never to be released outside of Japan” list. The massive wall of Japanese text also earns this game a spot on the “never to be fan translated” list, too.
So what is it all about? The game is ‘Supervised by” Koichi Nakano. As such he “consulted” with the designers about the element of training and of the sport, to ensure its authenticity. You don’t actually get to play as Koichi Nakano, only that you will always be safe in the knowledge that he oversaw all of this. To what degree, is never said.
You create your own character, including name and hometown then start training for upcoming races, then eventually enter those competitions and win money. You start on April 1st, 1994 and begin to train for the upcoming Keirin season. You can choose to hit the gym, work hard to increase your power and stamina, getting your bike up to speed, and then maintaining it. It’s basically a lot of A button mashing. A few activities are automatic and you just watch it!
You can also upgrade your bike, check your upcoming races, or just take a day off! Actions takes up most of your day and after you have trained or visited the doctor, the day is over. One of the frustrating parts of this game is that to get the next day to happen, you must return home, rather than simply returning and waking up the next day automatically!

I love seeing this obscure cultural specific stuff, obviously Japan has a ton of that. Gives me this weird yet satisfying nostalgia for a time I never experienced, having spent the 90s being a nerdy American kid who poured over gaming magazines and comic books endlessly being blown away by the small amount of anime that we got localized. Another great video as usual, teaching me about yet another aspect of Japan I had no idea existed.

I haven't watched yet, but I see the first chapter is "muh sponserz." Thank you very much for your continued parodies of channels with sponsored content, especially those who spend up to two minutes at the start of a video plugging that sponsor. I signed up for KZfaq Premium (Red at first) to avoid ads, only for desperate creators to bake them into their videos. With that rant out of the way, time for me to learn about Koichi Nakano.

heh, that's kind of a funny thing to make a game out of, and an even funnier way of going about it with no playable racing elements. it reminds me of the horse race gambling games (which i never would've guessed existed until i poked around in the sg-1000's library after watching one of your videos). it makes me wonder how well these keirin games sold. (and i guess i'd also want to know how well horse racing games sell since they're still being made) also, excellent job on nabbing that "sponsor." it's always a great way to start a video with an ad like that

Hey GTV, can you read those Japanese characters? Not asking you to do it, lol Just wondering if you're able to read them when you play these games?

Yes I can! I do have trouble reading people’s handwriting though. As far as in the game what I say is written in order too to bottom. Like the doctor it said check up medicine etc like that 🚴🏻

@@GTV-Japan Ohhh... I see... So the playfully charming sexual treasure that is John Nord happens to be famous for something other than his peanut butter? I would eat John Nord's Peanut Butter off of literally anything, you know what I'm saying? 😜 I need to go to bed...😅😘

Jeez. Did Koichi Nakano hate video games and put out such a boring concept to troll Gamers who actually wanted a racing challenge to play? I know a lot of video games and their concepts are weird once you get right down to them, but this is a special class of strange. Like so mundane and boring a video game concept, it's weird that anyone thought anyone would play it. Like if Mike Tyson's Punch Out had no actual boxing in it, and all you did was watch Mike talk to his agent about weed gummies and recording dialog for his adult swim cartoon series. I'm surprised his record albums are him singing and not a spoken word lecture about the concept of what music is.

Haha I can’t imagine a record like that. Yeah it’s funny because any game takes a long time to make and so didn’t anyone during that process stop and think about this? I guess they got the game they wanted. Thanks for watching day one! 🚴🏻

@@GTV-Japan Then again, I get the feeling that if it's a cycling game, it would be one where you'd have to tap the A and B buttons repetitively and rapidly for over a minute. I always hated games that did that. My hands get so tired halfway through.

I don’t know how’d your try to replicate it other than the same as car racing where you hold the button down or have to manage a heartbeat meter or something. Actually in big thanks I had no idea what I was doing. The controls were very weird

*Sigh* Japan really does love adding anime chicks to everything, it's so annoying. OMG, Japan get all the classic games! While the rest of world get NBA Jam, Earthworm Jim, Tetris, Road Rash, Mortal Kombat, Doom, The Lost Vikings, Blades of Vengeance, Sega's Aladdin, Sega's Jurassic Park, Sega's Batman & Robin, X-Men 2: Clone Wars, Toejam & Earl, Lion King, Prince of Persia, Donkey Kong Country & other horrible western made games......life is so unfair, lol! Alot of ppl enjoy this type of boring gameplay because Sega's Football Manager series is one of their top seller. Will this VPN also allow me to watch something blocked in my country on Netflix?! Because clearly I need to watch that 1 show so badly on Netflix only instead of getting it somewhere else. Remember if you don't like this video something is wrong with you!
