For centuries there have been tales of strange noises on top of Roan Mountain on the border of western North Carolina and east Tennessee. Some reported hearing a choir of fairies, angels or ghosts singing, but others look for a scientific explanation to what causes the alleged surreal sounds that frighten many visitors, especially those visiting the luxurious Cloudland Hotel Resort in the late 1800s. My Home, NC talks to author and historian Jennifer Bauer about this fascinating North Carolina legend.

You got a love, Roan Mountain, and all of Avery County and all the mountains. I worked lotta years in around Avery County for the Christmas tree growers and wreath makers ! I really became infatuated with the mountains I just felt better, and the people were so much more down to earth and kind !

I heard the "choir" once about 8 years ago. It sounded as if it were coming from the treetops above the spring where the hotel once stood. I heard native drumming and chanting that seemed to go around in a circular pattern up in the treetops. I feel they are what the Cherokee called Brownies, little native people who look like the Cherokee. They live in the treetops and down in the ground rock caves. I had never heard about the phenomenon up there until after my experience.

I for years heard partying noises in the forest by my home. I began to hear them when i was about 8 or 9. My sister and brother had friends that would party across the field from our house and through the treeline. But i heard it every summer. Then i heard it when i was finally a teenager myself. My cousin and i were camping in a forest just kitty corner to that one, a field seperated the forests unless you went around in a L shape. We were camped and listening to Fastball - The Way (a one hit wonder) when we heard music, shouting and laughter in the forest across from us, he shouted and they shouted back. He always had balls of steel lol, i was always kinda shy. So i winced when he did that, anyway we went to the edge of our treeline overlooking the field and i'm pretty sure he shouted again, they shouted back and we crossed the field but here is where things get odd. . . as soon as we hit the their tree line, the music, the shouting, the laughing all stopped DEAD... like a switch was thrown. We looked at eachother, shrugged and went back to camp. It was only about a 4-5 minute stroll, we sat down, 2 minutes or less it started back up again lol. We didn't think much on it, got back up, he shouted, they shouted and we headed back. Approaching the tree line, this time we are not talking to eachother, we already discussed being as quiet and stealthy as possible, same thing... only we could hear the ... lack of sound more audibly since we didn't even make noise under our feet. It was NOT natural. If the music stopped, and not the voices okay... if the laughing stopped and not the music and voices... fine... but everything just turned off... We hauled ass boy, so fast lol. Never went back, and we camped that site idk how many times! The partying only happens in July. Never any other month, because after that crazy crap i began to take note of it. I finally grew up, became a man and left the area, but until the last year i left, those damn parties continued lol. Also of note, we had been to the area we suspect the sound was coming from. There was an old camp site, an old beat up truck, and i mean totally rusted out, nothing but a sheet of rust with a steering wheel basically but what really caught my eye were the beer cans, with very faded print "the new aluminum can" . . . NEW... aluminum... i never bothered to look up when we began to manufacture beer cans in this country but uhhhh, a long time before i was born lol. I also remember my friend Michales dad telling us a terrible story about a group of his friends that tossed a beer keg in the fire empty and it killed a lot of them. Shrapnel obviously. I don't know if it was the same area, doubt it but that story entered into my mind and DID NOT help my anxiety levels lol. If you walk that old dirt road along where i lived that borders the field and L shaped forest, in July i guarantee you will hear it. We also found arrowheads out there and old pottery, we found very old crumbled down houses made of stone with old furnaces that had cole in them, moonshine jugs and blacksmith nails. There was also a very old well. So we saw evidence of both Native Americans in the area and Colonials. . . we all saw crazy weird things up there over the years from animals that seemed to vanish to people sticking their heads out behind trees many yards away. We all shared our strange stories when we got to highschool and one person spoke up then everyone said "OMG YOU TOO!"?

How amazingly fascinating! I absolutely believe this, and agree with almost all interpretations: it can be fairies, the indigenous spirits and the mountain itself. Actually kind of blown away because I have always felt the presence of all those things on this majestic mountain. Such a powerful, mystical place, and never sinister; it's just the mountain itself reminding you that you're in the presence of something far greater and older than any human.
