FUNF FACT: Pike's storyline is because Ashley Johnson, the voice/player was filming NBC's Blindspot in NYC most of the year. She only had so many breaks off and Skype calls during the first two campaigns. At least in the animated series, they could give her a proper story instead of Pike has to go to a temple.

@@stingerjohnny9951 Not happening. Vax is the second biggest horn dog and he drops the clue about the Scan man's transmissible diseases. Stick to Grog, Pike. He's the safest bet on the friend list. Always trust Grog.

Pike is a beast: she grabbed Grog's legs with one hand and the table with the other hand to try and keep him from being pulled away. Then when she was attacked by one of the shades, she just spat in its face and kept holding on. Absolute monstah.

The undead that were sent after Vox Machina in this episode were Wraiths. They have a special ability to drain your HP, and I think the bleeding from the eyes/wounds was a cool way to show that in the animation.

they were more powerful in earlier editions of D&D, in 5e the heroes are too powerful, even if they are almost wiped out, all they need a long rest and back to full health. Weak

@@Nexusofgeek They need Lesser or Greater restoration. That's scarcity is dependent on the world. And older editions of D&D had far more stupidity and baggage. Playing D&D at all frankly rather than a game not stuck 20 years in the past, that remembered it was supposed to be a roleplaying game en route to the publishers is a sign of weakness. If you're gonna play this bitchy game you're gonna win bitchy prizes.

Worth remembering that the team, being mid-level adventurers at this point, are a lot harder to kill than your average person. Or more to the point, your average guard.

Really liking your reactions. BTW, the black ooze is how they chose to portray necrotic damage. While the end result is the same, it is more draining life then causing physical damage.

The thing about clerics and a few other caster types in D&D style stories is that the power is very much NOT in them, but fully from their deity or other patron....and if something interferes no magic will happen until that interference is fixed. (Depending on the DM even a broken or missing holy symbol might stop a cleric, but we will just have to see what the problem for Pike here is ;) )

I think they used the broken symbol to represent the fact that the connection was broken, since if we purely go by the rules they're pretty cheap to replace.

Delilah physically breaking the symbol took Pike out of that fight. But if that's all it was then when Pike returned to the shrine she should have been able to reconnect, maybe even have the symbol magically mended. I think that scene did well to show that there was more than just a cracked piece of jewellery; you don't need a spellcasting focus to pray.

@@hhylobates4098 Right, otherwise the conversation at the door would have been Pike going "can I buy another one of these things? Mine broke." And then the priestess would be "sure, that's (looks up the Player's Handbook) 5 gold pieces please," and then that entire side plot would be over with.

@@elbruces It broke in the campaign as well...so it wasn't just a show thing. Spoilers for how it broke in the campaign. She slit a sleeping enemy's throat. Such a brutal killing isn't really an okay thing with Sarenrae (The Everlight) and was just a kinda out of character thing for Pike to do. So her holy symbol cracked and she had to leave and go rebuild a temple of Saranrae that she knew existed but had gone to ruin. I like that changes to the storyline they have made in the show...except for how the symbol ended up breaking by being hit with a random spell of Delilahs'. But it's fine. A nitpick, really.

@@AnxietyRat Yeah, but the point is it meant more than a broken focus. Getting another holy symbol costs... (looks it up in the PHB)... 5 gold pieces. I think she could have come up with 5gp, if that's all it was.

In the live streamed dnd game this show is based on, the woman who played Pike got a gig in NY for a TV show, so she couldn't make it for a lot of what happens next. When she could, she'd pop in through skype but it was rarely planned. The DM had to keep the story going and the last thing you want to have happen is a character die when it's under someone else's control, so Pike stayed behind.

The creatures are Wraiths, which in D&D lower your HP maximum when they hit you, which is what that black ooze represented. And they get disadvantage on their attacks and eyesight when they're in sunlight, which was portrayed here by them becoming tangible, which I thought was a nice touch. (In the game, they can continue moving through things even in light -- but you can still hit them, they just have resistance to most types of damage, so they take half damage usually.)

So the cast originally wanted it to be this level of violent to show that this world is truly dangerous. It wasn’t supposed to be some simple “oh I got a small scrape after being slammed by a dragon tail and flung forty feet.” Which you do see earlier on, but this was the episode where the animators truly go the “oh, you want us to fuck ‘em up? Alright, bet.”

It's probably easier to keep it straight in scripted content than in the improv they engage it at the table. I haven't noticed a spot in the show where they got it wrong

They do not mess it up in the show. If they had subtitles on they would be able to see who is being called what name. But I don't think they do have them on.

You asked "Couldn't she just stop in a temple on the way", this gets into some deep lore from the stream, but yes she could, but there is only one temple to her god as her god is a god who's following is just coming back into worship. Technically the temple is in her home town and it is on the way from Emon to Whitestone. But per comments below there was another reason IRL that they separated. I believe that their adaption here from the live stream really works well, and probably better for an audience that hasn't seen the original stream.

I wish they would have done some animation of the battles with doors from the actual game. lol. I mean, they beat groups of somewhat difficult enemies and struggle against doors so many times. 😆

The struggle against doors *was* referenced like 6 times across the series, starting in episode 2 with the door at Kreigs mansion. The original legendary church door from the game was adapted into episode 6 at the prison.

But people have made animations using the original audio from the stream games and I wish they had got permission to use those as sort of an end credit scene. I admittedly screwed up and was kinda vague in my og post. I apologize about that.

@@daveb947 that would have been a copyright nightmare if they did that...similar to the pictures they used for the Vox Machina character backstories that they then had to blur in the campaign. Or the reason they hasd to stop the fanart reels in the break and only use commissioned work now...it would be cool if they did include fanmade content...but would stick out like a sore thumb, if they did. And again be a nightmare for them, in reality.
