It's interesting how pop/nerd culture influenced critical role,( the cast, characters and story) and nowcritical role is in tern influencing pop/nerd culture. The great thing about critical role is that at it's heart it's just a group of fans and friends having a good time together telling good stories. And that is what it still is just expanded beyond anyone's expectations.

Fun Fact: Marisha Ray mentioned that one of the inspirations behind Keyleth was "Avatar: The Last Airbender". Kiki's people (the Ashari) are divided into four sections (Keyleth is of the Air Ashari) and a future leader of each tribe must journey around the world to each of the four tribes to learn from them.
@michaelkemmet834
@michaelkemmet834 2 жыл бұрын
Even more fun fact: Marisha has also said that the inspiration was unconscious. She was a huge Avatar fan, but she didn't deliberately base Keyleth off Aang. While building Keyleth, she couldn't decide which cleric domain to chose(air, earth, fire, water, etc). So she came up with the idea of traveling to each branch and learning spells from each domain as she progressed and leveled up. It was only when it was pointed out to her later that this was basically Aang's story did she realize what she had subconsciously done.

@@PrinceIMC Remember that Keyleth was created during the Pathfinder days. "Nature Bond (Ex): At 1st level, a druid forms a bond with nature. This bond can take one of two forms. The first is a close tie to the natural world, granting the druid one of the following cleric domains: Air, Animal, Earth, Fire, Plant, Water, or Weather." And here's the quote from Marisha from the Wizard World Portland CR Panel back in 2016: "I had tried the druid in 4th edition and I hated it and I thought druids were useless. And then we did this game and I was like all right, yeah, I guess I'll give druids a shot one more time. This was Pathfinder and you could pick a domain kind of like clerics could, and I couldn't decide between any of the elements, so I was like, well, I'll just start with air and I'll just make it my thing to go get all of them. And that's how she was born, not really out of character development, mainly out of selfish min/maxer shit. (laughter) I'm a huge Avatar: The Last Airbender fan. I didn't mean to make her based off of The Last Airbender. It subconsciously seeped in and happened that way."

@@PrinceIMC I believe Pathfinder druids can cast spells of all types like you said, but they get bonuses(extra spell slots and # of daily memorized spells) for the domain type they chose. Marisha was trying to stretch the rules because she couldn't choose which domain she wanted. In the end, I don't think it mattered because the switch to 5e made the point moot.

Due to ASHLEY's absence -- filming Season 2 of 'Blindspot' -- it is extremely satisfying to see that in the Animation story; there is a genuine reason: It's also symbolic = her amulet is 'fractured' and also her connection to her deity. Cannot wait for more!

A magic focus lets you escape awkwardly lugging around 20 odd items in your pockets and cast without materials. From a mechanics standpoint, All Pike had to do is go to Walmart for another divine focus. From a story writing perspective, go on a spiritual journey :p

@NinjaGidget
@NinjaGidget 2 жыл бұрын
I believe that's the D&D rule as well. They drain a victim and bury them, which rise as vampire spawn: basically mindless, feral creatures bound to the one that drained them. If the vampire feeds the spawn their (the vampire's) blood, the spawn gains free will and becomes a full vampire in their own right.

Pike's amulet, as said previously, is a Holy Symbol, required for Clerics to use magic. It's... well, a bit like the goddess she'd devoted to granting her a fraction of her (Everlight. Bloody pronoun games) power to perform holy miracles. Apparently, in-game the reason she temporarily lost her connection to the Everlight wasn't because Delilah damaged her Holy Symbol, but because she killed an incapacited Duergar in brutal fashion. And as a definate god of good, that was unacceptable.

Love this episode! And your reactions!! Always interesting to hear different takes coming from people who haven't initially seen Critical Role. Pike and Grog has such a pure relationship. Btw, Pike's necklace is sort of like a focus to her divine magic. In D&D clerics are intermediates the mortal world and the plane of the gods. The gods can bestow power to certain individuals they choose for a higher calling. FYI, Keyleth is a druid, so her magic comes from the force of nature ;). Not a mage. This is why she can transform to different creatures for example. And yes, it will be fun to see you react to her backstory later on. Every character has an interesting history. :D

@@FandomZone You could say that. When she meditates, she's trying to communicate with the Everlight. From what I remember, she goes to a sort of plane that lies between the mortal plane and the one of the gods. Aah! I really liked this episode, I am actually really surprised they made the leap to go ahead and split Pike from the party. This happened in the original gameplay because Pike is Ashley Johnson’s character and she had to leave to film episodes of Blindspot in New York, so she was absent from games quite a bit. I also love how they make all the combat scenes familiar to D&D players but also to those who are uninitiated. They left reoccurring clues to how those wraiths operated throughout the episode and they culminate during the fight when they figure out they need light. I think shadow creatures or undead creatures roll at disadvantage in magical light so it makes sense that that would be translated as them being weaker when Keyleth cast Daylight! And, and! It’s Druid, Clerics and Paladins that can cast the Daylight spell!! So watching both Pike try to cast it in one way and Keyleth casting it in another way is so cool! You guys! in the streams, Trinket is present, but plays no significant role in the narrative because of issues that will become apparent in ep 5 and 6. It made a lot of sense to leave the bear behind. One other point: The undead intruders as they presented in the live streams were invisible even in fire light. In D&D terms they can be attacked at 'disadvantage' The animation needed them to be visible but still have the difficult to hit trait. The darkness was a good way to do that and still have what Keyleth did work. In the live streams Pike was already gone due to Ashley Johnson's commitment to Blindspot recordings in NYC.
