Legendary pioneer skateboarder/snowboarder, Cara-Beth Burnside, tells stories of being one of the few female skaters in the early 80's, crossing over to snowboarding, advocating for equality, and battling the X-Games through solidarity. Equate and desribe!

I filmed and edited Cara-Beth's part in Risk It (Santa Cruz Speed Wheels 1990). It is the first solo female full pro part in a major skate video. Powell had a montage of girls but this part was first solo and full of female NBDs. It made a massive impact when it came out. It was one of the most talked about parts in the video. She was absolutely ripping, doing her tricks proper, with power and style. Every trick she did on the vert and mini ramp made it into her part. I reposted it in November 2021 on my KZfaq Channel and tagged her on Instagram and it got comments and likes from many including several of today's female pros including Lizzie. So it was surprising to say the least when in this interview, Cara-Beth talked about videos, she mentions only getting "3 seconds in some video- maybe a Santa Cruz video"? She forgot about her Risk It part and I guess Tony and Jason never saw it because they didn't mention it either? Talk about an elephant in the room moment of the interview...kinda sad considering the influence and affect it had on women's skateboarding and acceptance of it worldwide. Regardless, because of that part- her legacy is set in stone forever.

Attitudes have changed 180° since the 90s when girls werre just Betties that wore the gear and just dated skaters. Girls skating was kinda discouraged cuz the thinking back then was Nobody wants their chick all bruises and scabs, but i see now how wack that was really

She's a legend! She's the link between the 70's girl skaters and the boom of nowadays! 70's it seemed like there was so many back then and the 80's like none except Cara and the few. 90's they started ripping street, Elissa, Reyes, Molica, and now it's everyone!! 🤘

Skating inspires who it inspires. I was at my local park this summer and this 6 year old girl and her uncle showed up and she asked me if I could go down the ramp. She seen me do it once and was like "I could do that" the rest of my sesh I was helping this little girl not break herself. So fearless, she wanted to roll in on the quarter pipe standing up and her uncle was like "let's stay on these ramps over here" lol it was sick she is a little ripper. I haven't seen them since but I hope to one day see her ripping around and recognize her. She had the mentality for sure even at that age. Still at that age I was just trying to stand and roll. That was a really cool, really inspiring day for me. Then on Halloween this year I dropped in on the quarter pipe. Good skating season for me lol thanks for the episode guys your all awesome!!!!! Take care

I like how Tony has been such an advocate for woman's skateboarding. I've seen videos of him speaking at woman's conferences, and seeing him skate with Sky Brown at the mega ramp or the videos of Sakura skating his ramp. Also this podcast. The way he purposely stepped back so Lizzy Armanto could tell her story and now letting Cara-Beth tell her story and insisting he make up for a time she didn't get paid. I didn't know anything about Cara-Beth before this. I'm an early 2000s skater. I'm glad he had her on.

@corail53
@corail53 Жыл бұрын
@@SPINNINGMYWHEELS777 She was one of the pioneers for women in skating and that is huge considering the tiny percentage of women in that millions who got into it and stuck with it long enough to get to the pro level. Women have also been getting paid like crap in action sports since the start compared to the men and while yes that was mainly due to viewership - they never bothered to promote them properly to get them that viewership. BMX had a even bigger issue with this as practically no women were or are in that sport and those who did gravitate towards racing or flatland, racing at least got into the Olympics eventually. In snowboarding and freestyle skiing it took years for women to get recognized and have better pay despite them having been involved much more than the other sports for longer.

I’m my era I was a tomboy. I always ran with the boys I wanted to move. I am athletic but fuck team sports, always. I like to compete with myself. Im CBB’s same age/she was the solo chick ripper forever. It’s hard to even explain what it was like back then. I came up snowboarding in the early 9O’s. As a kid I had skied, snowboarding was freeing. I taught myself on Mt.Hood at Timberline, on ice sheets often. Eventually I took off to Colorado to escape Portland, and ride bettering snow. Riding with all guys was fun. Most of my pals had come from skating at that point. Keeping up with them pushed me to go fast, hit jumps, don’t hesitate, push. Totally into it. I remember when they finally started having some girl riders and eventually gear. One of my favorite things now is street roller skating. I’m so into it. Up next start riding parks. My 6 year old niece is fearless it’s so fun encouraging her rather than teaching her to be cautious she might hurt herself. When you learn stuff in Oregon the conditions can be rough but it makes you stronger. It works itself out.
