Being in a war where you could bring stuff like that back, yeah. I was in operation iraqi freedom, and it would have been sweet to bring back an automatic AK. I never knew how he brought it back he died when I was 12 -13ish so never got to ask, he was the reason I joined. He was also the one who told us kids that if we ever got the chance to try marijuana, to do it, it feels like you’re floating on a cloud. He was a really cool uncle, wish we could have swapped war stories.

I have my grandpa's M2 carbine and his 1911 sidearm from WWII. He was a paratrooper. The M2 is registered so I can keep it. I hardly shoot it though, because .30 carbine is kinda expensive, especially on full auto. I don't plan to sell it, but I've seen a few at RIA auctions go got 25-30k+.

I don’t know, my father had a love hate relationship on the M16 in Vietnam. He initially trained and then fought with the M14. But when the M16 started being issued he refused to turn in his M14. His reasoning was in his words “there has never been a firearm that didn’t need to be cleaned after use.” Sure the M14 had its problems of being heavier and unwieldy. But being unable to do proper cleaning and maintenance on the M16 was a death sentence. It was only after all the problems on the M16 was solved and cleaning kits were issued did my father appreciate the benefits of the light weight M16.

My Dad & all my uncles loved the M16 in Vietnam. They were all there pretty early in the war, when the M16s were having trouble with the ball powder & non-chromed barrels. I don't remember any of them having had any issues with the rifle. But they were all raised with guns. Keeping it clean, oiled & corrosion free would have been 2nd nature to them. My Dad especially liked to use motor oil to lube his weapons in Vietnam.

It's the 2nd time the creator of this video proved that not only is he clueless about what he's talking about but also like most he gets all his knowledge from the internet instead of actual facts, the first time he proved he doesn't know what he's talking about was when he said M16's have plastic parts, they aren't plastic they're pressure formed fiberglass which lay's to rest the myth that Mattel ever had anything to do with M16's no matter how many veterans swear up and down that they personally were issued an M16 that had Mattel marked parts, Mattel never worked with pressure formed fiberglass only with extruded plastic, the machinery for working with the two different materials are completely different from each other making it impossible for Mattel to ever have made M16 parts.

@Rafapb17

The only GIs that actually used AKs in Vietnam were Commandos, like LRRP units, Navy SEALs and MACV SOG, and they used it only due the logistics of the mission and abundance of ammunition. No regular infantryman would toss his rifle to carry an enemy gun instead. If that happened, it was mostly to get a war trophy or some very few isolated and extremelly uncommon cases.

Non-chromed barrels in a jungle environment and incorrect ammo didn't help either. Keep the gunk out and use correct ammo, and it's amazingly tolerant. It really was decent at first until Olin Winchester wanted a piece of the contracts. When Mr. Stoner designed it the cartridge was loaded with DuPont IMR stick powder which burns much hotter than the Olin Winchester ball powder. The stick powders literally burnt any carbon out of the action and thus prevented a need for frequent and hard cleaning, just a normal maintenance routine was good. As to stopping power I still prefer the M-14.

@@dukecraig2402It's called old fashioned patriotism. YOU may not like them, but America loves them, me included. There is nothing more American than a man with a M4 or Ar 15, military or civilization. Maybe a 30-30 lever gun, or a 1911 but you get the drift.

@@dukecraig2402 All of the three weapons I previously mentioned revolutionized guns, and are still enjoyed around the world today. They also were American inventions. There is a certain patriotism that comes with that knowledge. Also there is a certain appeal, or want in such weapons because they work well, and are American.

Fun fact: American troops nicknamed the M16 the Mattel gun after the toy company Mattel because most of it’s components were made of plastic.

No they weren't and it's a myth that Mattel ever had anything to do with the M16 no matter how many veterans swear up and down that they personally were issued an M16 that had Mattel marked parts. M16 stocks and handguards weren't made of plastic they're made from pressure formed fiberglass which is a material that Mattel never worked with nor did they ever possess the machines to fabricate it which are completely different from the extruded plastic machines that Mattel used to make their toys, the confusion started back in the 60's when Mattel made a child's toy M16 look alike called the Marauder, John Wayne can be seen breaking one on a tree in the movie The Green Beret's, but Mattel never had anything to do with military M16's in any way shape or form, it's a myth that despite there not being a single government or Mattel record to prove it or a picture, single part in a collection or museum to prove it some people continue to believe, it's a myth that's been busted by facts over and over but some people just can't seem to let go of it.

I've read comments from Vietnam Vets about how fragile the M-16 was. One said that after a year carrying one every day, his sweat had caused enough corrosion to eat through the receiver where it meets the barrel. Other vets personally told me it was a POS in 67, due to its jamming and fragility.
