That's what separates engineers from architects. Engineers design it to work well. Function over form.
@Gamesaucer
@Gamesaucer 2 жыл бұрын
@@speedy01247 It's the opposite. Only humans can efficiently use it. Every driver will look at that interchange a little differently because there are so many paths available. As a result, traffic spreads out to make use of the full capacity of the roundabout. Because it's such an unusual roundabout, it also keeps people more alert and acts as a traffic calming device, making it very safe. None of those functions work for a robot. They'll just pick the shortest route across with the result that they can't even make use of the full capacity... and the large capacity (with greater throughput as a result) is the main reason you'd build one of those in the first place.

@@Gamesaucer Load balancing can be applied to self driving cars. Google maps already adjusts route based on traffic
@Gamesaucer
@Gamesaucer 2 жыл бұрын
@@noahpalmer7966 But where does it get that traffic data from? Collection of such data is not easy and right now it only works over longer periods of time. On-demand selection of a route across something like the Magic Roundabout based on live data is practically impossible because that data would need to be gathered over the course of seconds as the flow of traffic fluctuation. All a human has to do is look around... but self-driving cars CANNOT see and think like a human does. Of course, as the ratio of self-driving cars increases, things will become more predictable, and vehicles could starting plan out smaller details of their routes ahead of time. But even then, you need to consider that there are still pedestrians and cyclists a vehicle could be held up by, so that vehicle may not arrive at the roundabout at the time it is expected to. This will throw off the data, requiring on-demand route selection again. It'd work better than is possible currently, but they still wouldn't be able to negotiate the roundabout as efficiently as a human can. We may be able to get a bit closer, but we definitely can't surpass humans at present There is no way for self-driving cars to use this intersection the way a human can unless we can actually make them think like humans. And if we could make AI that thinks like a human, we'd be seeing a drastically different world than we do currently. That technology is still far off, decades away at the least.
@Goldendroid
@Goldendroid 2 жыл бұрын
By the way, the rough formula to calculate efficiency is [ (flow x complexity) / concrete ] x 1000 It gives a rough answer, but it’s off by a few, probably because the traffic flow, concrete and complexity values are rounded from decimals. What this means is that saving a couple tons of concrete when using a LOT of concrete will barely affect the score (due to a 1/x relationship), compared to trying to improve the traffic flow (which is proportional) but if you manage to use MUCH LESS concrete, your score will increase by a lot more even if the traffic flow is slightly slower.

Two things I'd like to point out after reading some comments already: Those of you who are saying Matt didn't simulate level 41 obviously didn't notice there was no stopwatch in the menu. Those of you who are saying that level 1 is the greatest because of the strongest shape don't seem to realise that level 1 is the level under the strongest shape, which is level 0. The Level number and efficiency scores are shown on the world map at the top left of each level.

I am partial to all the clover leafs. When I was little; my aunt used to take us little ones out on amazing adventures. One time, the baby cousin was crying like crazy and nothing we did calmed him. My aunt said Phuket! Let’s go drive on the butterfly. I have always liked driving just for fun. So we drove around the cloverleaf over and over again, ever needing to stop with lots of fun jello curves! (Jello is a game you play in the car, where you lean and crush each other left and right by leaning into the curves. Sort of like sideways dog pike) the baby was appeased and finally cried themselves to sleep. Good times!

For the crane level, you could DRASTICALLY improve it by making a small roundabout that connects all of the cranes together while avoiding the main road. Have the main highway be a straight through with a big roundabout for the cranes. Connect on either end to the main road and you've got it set, or as you say, "sorted!"

Thank you very much for making these videos. I love this game and have been playing it for years. It is so good to see someone build interchanges who knows what they are doing. Your scores are very impressive. I have completed more blocks, but my scores are way lower, generally in the 200s with some 300s. My cars go fast but I use too much concrete! I love the magic roundabout on block 43. I redid mine using your design, but I can't score more than 327. I keep redoing it but can't get into the 400s. Same on block 17, I tried your double cloverleaf, exactly, but I only scored 375. Anyway, please keep posting these. I am learning a lot from you. Thanks a bunch and Happy New Year. : )

Turbine interchange is my favorite interchange of all, due to the efficient and high-volume throughput and elegant shape. I also like diverging diamond interchanges. Also, as a U.S. resident, my exposure to roundabouts here has been increasing due to a few being recently built at key (usually awkward/long wait) intersections in the nearest city to me, and I'm definitely warming to them. The single-lane ones anyway; I'm still getting used to the multi-lane ones.

multilane roundabouts are fun. I still specifically choose to drive when there is little to no traffic tho(only need the car once a week), that way i can enter at like 50km/h with no stress :3 You really don't want to be in the middle lane of the roundabout when there is traffic and you gotta exit.

On that last one I thought the traffic to 16 was actually really low. I would’ve done a standard cloverleaf connecting the main four and then just a simple diverge to connect to 16. I think it would’ve used a lot less concrete and achieved a similar, if not slightly higher, traffic flow. Although, lower complexity.

Its funny cause I checked the Steam reviews and every single one, good or bad, is just asking for that one thing :) Also, I play some competitive FPS games like Rust where we need advanced mice that allow us to change our DPI to various levels for different types of aiming, and I think it would be very helpful in this game for lowering your DPI to like 400 or 800 or something to draw these details or try to get the straight possible lines or roundest possible corners. Alot of mice have DPI +/- buttons that can make it really convenient to bump it down for drawing and bump it up for browsing.
