It truly hit me when he said, "I chose to make memories"- So true. We are always doing that, and we should take more time to remember them. These stories, like Gary's will be with everyone who hears them. RIP, Gary. You were one of the greats and we sure miss you!

Oh man, this is tough to watch. Gary’s book, “Caddisflies” was one of the first fly fishing books I bought. It’s considered the Bible for everything Caddis. RIP.

I came here after tying some deep sparkle pupa from my copy of Gary's treatise on caddisflies. According to a UK renowned caddis fly fishereman (a lovely, down to earth, modest man who lives locally to me) that many of the sprecies in this book are not native to the UK; that may be so but I catch fish on the deep sparkle pupa so thank you Gary for introducing me to this pattern. I was shocked when the link brought me to this video. Even though I did not know Gary I watched it with a lump in my throat and tears not far away from my eyes - that was until laughter burst forth like a hungry trout smashing an emergent sparkle pupa - the tale about Chester and peeing on Jack Dennis's leg😂 Sorry Jack but every dog owner will understand.

Sorry to take so long in answer you. I'm still learning how to operate this channel and did not realize the different links to comments. It was 20 years ago when I edited everything it was really hard to do but I'd literally see Gary every day in my work with my flyfishing and tying channel. Gary is extremely well remember by many fans live through his videos which I was so lucky to produce thanks for your comment

Although I never had the opportunity to meet Gary, he has been my mentor in tying and fishing caddis patterns. His passing was a great loss to the fly fishing community. It has been a while since I looked, does anyone know if his publishing company, The Bookmailer, is still in operation?

As a biologist I had great respect for Gary's mind. Other anglers should model their thinking after him. He as unique and is missed.

@@jdswideworldofflyfishingan4759 Hey Jack, great video. I remember buying my first fly tying video and it was yours! I also remember you when you were a judge at the New Jersey Fly Fishing Show where I entered and won first place in the dry fly category. I tied a yellow humpy and dressed it heavily the way you liked them. I still have my tying competition flies. Cheers!
